Entry tags:!status: complete, ^date: november 15 2003, character: anthony goldstein, character: michael corner

Characters: Anthony & Michael
Setting: 15 November (Saturday), around 12:24PM.
Summary: Best mates being best mates, possible definite angsting because that's what they do best.
Rating: PG-13 because there might be language.

Since the night before had been perfectly nightmare-free, Anthony had tried to look on a... brighter side. Tried being the key word because honestly, he had a few things to be less than positive about. Like, for instance, the fact that he was ever aware that later on he had a nightmare to look forward to. He really hoped the bad reaction had been a one time thing as he wasn't very keen on the idea of feeling as if he was still there for half the day after waking. It wasn't very conducive to functionality nor productivity and Anthony had things he needed to focus on.

Like the warning system for one. He'd need a second opinion on his theory once it was completely figured out... preferably someone with a good knowledge of charms and defense spells - maybe he should just talk to Hermione, actually. He didn't want everyone to think things were all safe and dandy and then find out that, no, it hadn't done anything helpful at all in the long run. Which was part of the reason he hadn't tried to push Michael into not feeling to blame about his potion. Even if that hadn't been Anthony's original intention. He'd been much more concerned with the urge to be sick and the like - which had been new in a horrible way, but that was beside the point.

The point was that Anthony was reasonably sure he might have had a pseudo-solution. Something part sneakoscope, part portkey-like for the wizards and something to notify the nearest wizard relative for the Muggles. Of course, he could always switch it up and have both notify the DA to be broader in terms of the amount of help available.

Thinking about this was a good way to not focus on the body he'd found yesterday evening with Zacharias Smith. He was sure it wasn't so much the body itself not that he had time to... process it, so much as it was what the body represented, and -

Anthony shook his head, knocking on the door to Michael's flat because he was a civilised person who didn't just go letting himself into people's places on his own, and he decided he was not going to finish that thought because then he'd likely end up like Lavender in a week's time and start calling everything hopeless and the like.

Funny enough, Michael knew what Anthony was getting at. You spend twelve years being best friends with someone and you start to pick up on these things, especially Anthony who had a weird way with not saying everything he meant to say. "No. I mean, how can I? I'm not going to lie and say everything doesn't feel hopeless because it does, but I can't just bloody give up..." Michael looked over at his book shelf for a moment, thinking of some of the books that resided there and the stories that recounted tales of just such situations of loss and devastation--none of them were very optimistic.

"Even if it feels like the world is crashing down around my head. The potions were useless, Muggles are affected by the nightmares too, this meeting today is a huge mess, Greyback's escaped from bloody Azkaban, Seamus says he doesn't know where Dean or his mum are at and generally I wouldn't think the worst but now..." Michael shook his head and scrubbed his hand over his face and then through his hair, tugging at it a bit. "Lavender's six year old nephew has a memory. I mean, this is bullshite, Ant. This is fucking bullshite. I'm bloody tired is what I am." He sighed. "And sorry. I didn't mean to unload on you right after you walk in the door. I know we're all tired of talking about this shite too."

Anthony was actually very glad for times like these when he didn't have to say more than two words and what he meant behind them was pretty much understood without question. What with there only being less than a handful of people that actually got that about him, he sort of had to appreciate it around the people who did.

His frown deepened a bit as he listened to Michael speak. It would be a lie to pretend that the odds weren't highly stacked against them in this, in ways they weren't even when Voldemort had the Ministry and Professor Dumbledore was dead. It was hard to find things to be positive about really, though at this exact moment, he was very very glad that so far he hadn't heard a thing about Lance being affected; he had no idea how he'd feel if that happened.

"It's fine," he shook his head. "It's not like there's much escaping it. At this point, I'm sure there's isn't anyone in Britain who doesn't know at least two people caught in this - which may or may not include themselves. Then there are bodies and the like being left for just anyone to find. None of it exactly makes for lighthearted conversation."

Michael considered what his friend was saying, knowing that it was certainly true. Everyone was dealing with it, but who knew if they all had as much information as the DA did which may be a good or a bad thing. He wasn't sure if it was exactly fair but it's not as if he could go about shouting the truth either. Not everyone took things well, especially when they knew the truth.

But then Anthony said something a bit off and Michael sat up. "Wait, what do you mean? Bodies being left for just anyone to find?" Michael raised an eyebrow, looking at his mate. He hadn't seen anything in the Prophet about a body - all he had read was more about the Kissed.

He didn't realise until Michael asked him about it that he'd actually been hoping that it would go unnoticed and the conversation would continue in the vein it had been heading in before hand. That would have been nice. "Well - " he started, frowning again because he didn't exactly want to explain and in that same moment, it occurred to him that Michael had said something about Seamus' mum being missing and Anthony really hoped that wasn't who they'd found last night even though all luck seemed to point towards that being the answer. If she was still missing. There was a very good chance the woman was completely unrelated to anyone he knew, right?

"So, last night I wasn't exactly paying attention to where I was going and I ran into Zacharias Smith. Pretty literally. And there was an alley, and we found... someone," he finally answered.

Michael pulled his feet off of Anthony's lap (which he figured would be a relief to his mate anyhow) and sat up completely straight now. "Smith? What the fuck were you doing wandering around with Smith? He's a bloody prat." Michael shook his head. He knew that wasn't really the point here, but Zacharias Smith's name left a terrible taste in his mouth and the image of himself punching him came forefront in his mind when anyone mentioned the bloke and made Michael hot all over again just thinking of the things that Smith had said that night.

"Right, so what do you mean, found someone?"

Not that Anthony was really all that surprised by that reaction, considering, but even still he had sort of hoped that Michael would realise that they hadn't been about to sit down to tea. "Well. I wasn't exactly... wandering. And it's not like we were on our way to dinner together or anything like that. We just so happened to be in the same place at the same time." He decided that part of the story didn't need any more details should Michael find it in himself to do something stupid.

"I mean, in the alley... there was a body. A very much dead body." Not that he was still bothered by it. Much.

Michael knew that what Anthony was saying was the truth and he didn't have the right to be getting worked up, but after the run-in with Marietta, he didn't particularly like the idea of Anthony getting into another situation in which he could be bullied. And maybe Michael had denied it with Marietta but Anthony was a bit of an easy target so it was just in Michael's nature to worry about these things. "Yeah, alright," Michael said, deflating some.

"Fuck." He really had nothing else to say these days. It basically described everything. "Did you know - did you find out who it was?" he asked, almost tentatively, almost too afraid to even want to find out. He wondered exactly when this had been, if it had been after he'd left his family's house and if it could possibly be either his brother or his father. Anthony would have recognised either of them though and he wouldn't have just been calling it 'a body.' Not to mention Michael would have been one of the first notified, yeah? It couldn't have been one of his family members, he assured himself. Not that it made it any better because it was still someone else's.

Anthony gave Michael a brief look, not exactly sure whether he believed that the Zacharias part of the conversation was actually being let go or not. After a moment, he decided that it was fine.

There was a bit of something in the tone of Michael's question that made Anthony shake his head as quickly as possible, not hesitating to add, "All I know is that it - the person - was an older woman." He wasn't actually sure what sort of unasked question he was answering, but in a way he sort of was.

Michael nodded, letting out a breath he didn't know he was holding. So even though he had rationalised that it couldn't be his father or his brother, it still comforted him to know that this was a woman that Anthony had seen. "What was she doing in the alley?" Michael asked, though it's not like Anthony would actually know the answer to that. "What happened to her? Were they able to tell you?" he asked, assuming that Anthony had called the DMLE to the scene even though he had been with Smith, Anthony was no idiot. He did wonder what they had to say about Smith being found with another body though.

Just then an owl came flying in through the window, carrying an afternoon edition of the Prophet. Michael read the headline and cringed, handing it over to Anthony without speaking. At least now they knew who the body was.

Anthony had figured, the night before, that the woman probably hadn't died all that long before they'd found her, especially considering how strong the spell to keep the alley from anyone's notice had been at first. And the alley had looked as if it had seen a fight. He shrugged, though, answering Michael with, "No idea why she was there. From what I saw it the alley looked a bit of a mess, so I'd say she fought back. And it looked like the Killing Curse, but no one actually told me anything. I think once they realised I didn't actually see anything happen, they didn't feel the need to tell me much of anything at all. Which was fine with me, honestly."

When the owl arrived with the Prophet, Anthony saw Michael cringe and took the paper with a bit of hesitation, finding the more important headline after a moment. Did that - he'd found Seamus' mother last night, then? It made talking about it completely different than when the woman had been unknown to him just a bit ago. "But Dean as a possible suspect, though? Really?"

Michael knew that it was a long shot, but it was worth asking. So this woman had been murdered, obviously, and by the sounds of it, it was brutal. It could have been Pandora again - most likely it was. But for some reason it sounded odd to him and he couldn't pinpoint why. "The Killing Curse? Are you sure?" Pandora had not used the Killing Curse on anyone else so far, had she? She usually killed everyone in some brutal way, so why would she do in this woman this way? Could it possibly be someone else?

Michael just shook his head. "I doubt that's what the DMLE is actually saying. It's just the Prophet being the Prophet. If Dean is missing then he may have been kidnapped by whoever killed Seamus' mum...if it was Pandora; but she's never used Avada Kedavra before. Why would she do it now?"

"Pretty sure, yeah. I mean, the scene wasn't very... um, bloody. Which sort of narrows down the methods of murder, I'd say." Anthony remembered that much, as there was little no chance that he'd have kept his lunch if it had been. He knew that much at least. He just wasn't a very big fan of violence unless in self-defence.

"I know it's not the DMLE. I'm just expressing my distaste at the Prophet and their lack of evolving past spinning an embellishment on every thing they write." Anthony shrugged. He wasn't really in the habit of thinking much on the way Pandora was happening to murder people as it wasn't very conducive to his sanity and if there was one thing Anthony was trying to keep steady, it was that. On the other hand, he couldn't really resist a theory discussion, even if he felt the topic a tad morbid.

"If the woman was Seamus' mum, which is highly likely considering I don't believe in coincidences that big, then Dean was with her. And that means two against one, right? Besides, that would also mean this all happened in an alleyway in Diagon Alley, which is busy enough in the middle of the day, let alone at around five when people are off work and milling about. Which I'd guess was the point of the don't-notice spell -- or whatever they used." He set the paper aside. "Staying with the theory of it being Pandora, maybe there was something more important than torturing the woman."
