let's see your memory
Characters: Dean and Ron
Setting: Ministry of Magic, shortly after 10:00, November 12
Summary: Dean needs to see Ron's memory so he can sketch Penelope's killer.
Rating: Worksafe

Dean woke up early enough that morning, though it took him a while to pry himself from Seamus's side. He had to go though - he was meeting Ron at the ministry to look into his memory so he could see the woman who killed Penelope Clearwater. He leaned over and kissed Seamus, murmuring an I love you in his ear before he got up, got dressed, and headed out.

He took the visitors entrance, though he really never liked flushing himself down the loo to get to the atrium. Once there though, he took off his coat and waited for Ron to meet him. He wasn't likely to get anywhere by himself, and he needed Ron to escort him, especially if they needed to use a pensieve.

Ron nodded, not saying anything more about that. Apparently it was fairly gruesome and by what he had told Gaskin, it sounded so, but he still couldn't remember it. It felt so odd. Ron kept himself from putting the memory back in as Dean asked, though he did feel like he needed to put it back in to feel normal again.

Ron wondered if Dean was trying to distract himself or Ron, but he didn't ask. "It's weird. I can't remember the incident at all, but I know that it happened because I have talked about it with other people and I reported the whole thing to Gaskin, so I can remember giving the details of it in the report. So I have the memory of telling Gaskin about it, but I can't actually remember it. It's not normal."

"That must be such a strange sensation," Dean noted with actual curiosity. To know there was a memory missing from you head, remember things surrounding the memory, but not the memory itself. How odd.

Dean took another ten minutes to finish a preliminary sketch, finish his pumpkin juice and set down the sketchpad. "All right, I'm going to have another look, make sure i got the details as right as possible, and then return your memory. If you don't mind having a look yourself at the drawing, just for further confirmation, I think we can wrap things up here shortly."

Without waiting for a reply, Dean took a deep breath, steeled himself, and went back into the pensieve. He watched again this time focusing as hard as he could on the woman's face, if only to avoid seeing what happened to Penny. There were a few little details he needed to change and he did, once he was out of the memory again. Exhaling loudly, he set down his pencil. "Right then. I'm set."

Ron nodded in agreement. He leaned back in his chair and watched Dean work, trying not to focus on the weird feeling inside his head from the missing memory. He'd never really watched Dean draw before so it was something new for him; it was odd to see someone springing onto the page from seemingly nothing.

He leaned forward on the table when Dean spoke up again. Ron nodded. "Alright, I'll do that. I dunno how useful I'll be but I'll take a look." Ron still didn't know if there was enough to really see with the blood everywhere, but then again Ron hadn't really looked back at his own memory yet. He watched Dean stick his face back into the pensieve, wondering if he should do so himself to affirm the look of the sketch himself. He didn't like the idea of it but it would mean a better result in the end.

When Dean said he was done, Ron nodded. "Okay. Let me look at it." Ron leaned forward and stuck his face into the pensieve, loathe as he was to do so and was taken back to the afternoon when he walked in on the murder of Penelope Clearwater. He waited until the murderer came into sight and tried to focus on her face and any details of it he could possibly pick up that he might have missed the day he was actually there. When he pulled back out he looked at Dean's sketch thoughtfully. "I think it's good. Er, the nose could be a bit pointier maybe?"

Dean sat back and stretched his fingers, watching as Ron looked back into his memory. He said nothing just staring between Ron and the drawing while he waited for Ron to finish.

When he did, Dean picked back up his pencil and graphite as eraser shavings flow over the page as he fixed the nose, sharpening the angles a bit. Yeah that did look more like her now. "I think we're all set here, Ron," Dean replied with a firm nod.

Ron nodded. He scooped the memory back out from the pensieve with his wand and replaced it back to his temple. It slowly seeped back into his head and finally he could remember everything again like he could before. "Right. Well, thanks so much for this Dean. Can we go ahead and make a copy of it for the DMLE?" If the DA and the DMLE both had copies it would be a good start for working on the case of the murderer, even though technically the DA was an unofficial group.

Ron still had no idea who the woman might be, but at least they could show the picture around and someone else might recognise her. It was certainly a good start if nothing else.

Dean watched Ron put the memory back, slightly fascinated by the process. If there had been other reasons behind it, he would have liked to learn more about it, but this was not the time. "You're welcome," he replied. "And yeah, go ahead, whatever you need to do. I think the more people who see it the better, to a point. It could help someone recognise her."

Dean stood up then, suddenly anxious to leave, but at least it was done. they had the portrait. Hopefully, it would actually help. "Let me know if there's anything else I can do, all right?"

Ron nodded in response, glad that he would be able to show the others around the DMLE the picture and hopefully get more people knowledgeable of the woman's face. He took a blank sheet of parchment and with his wand, transposed the image from Dean's sketch over to the blank parchment. Now they could make as many copies as needed.

He picked up his copy and nodded as Dean stood up; Ron handed Dean his copy. "Yeah, I will. Thanks again, mate. You're brilliant at this and I know it was shite to do it, but it was really helpful, so thanks."
