let's see your memory
Characters: Dean and Ron
Setting: Ministry of Magic, shortly after 10:00, November 12
Summary: Dean needs to see Ron's memory so he can sketch Penelope's killer.
Rating: Worksafe

Dean woke up early enough that morning, though it took him a while to pry himself from Seamus's side. He had to go though - he was meeting Ron at the ministry to look into his memory so he could see the woman who killed Penelope Clearwater. He leaned over and kissed Seamus, murmuring an I love you in his ear before he got up, got dressed, and headed out.

He took the visitors entrance, though he really never liked flushing himself down the loo to get to the atrium. Once there though, he took off his coat and waited for Ron to meet him. He wasn't likely to get anywhere by himself, and he needed Ron to escort him, especially if they needed to use a pensieve.

Ron made sure that he was ready to receive Dean in the Atrium around 10:00am, so he had to track down a pensieve that they could use in the DMLE before then. Gaskin helped him find one and Ron went down to the Atrium to sign Dean in beforehand so they didn't have to wait around when he arrived. When he was done he turned around and searched through the crowd and finally found his friend waiting and waved him over.

"Hey mate, thanks for coming," Ron said when they met up. Ron handed him his vistor's pass. "I got you signed in already so we can head there. Gaskin found me a pensieve to use, so it's in our office," Ron told him as they headed to the lifts.

Dean greeted Ron with something that passed for a smile and fell into step beside him. He fastened on the visitor's pass and slid his hands into his pockets. He was relieved to hear that Ron had everything prepared; he wanted to get through this as quickly as possible. He didn't expect it to be pleasant.

He followed Ron to the office and suddenly said, "I told Michael I'd do this for Lavender too. See the person in her fireplace, try to draw that as well. We were thinking of having another DA meeting, and I'd bring the sketches along."

As they entered the lifts, waiting to get off on the DMLE level, Ron looked over at Dean, a bit of surprise on his face. With everything that was going on with Penelope and Lloyd's cases, he had sort of forgotten about Lavender's situation, rude as it might sound. "Right, Lavender. She said she thought she saw Pandora, right? The actual Pandora, with red hair?"

But that wasn't the woman that Ron had seen killing Penelope, which didn't make any sense. If Lavender did see Pandora, what did that mean? "That's good though. We should have another meeting. With the sketches and any information I might get off of these two cases, we have plenty to discuss, I reckon."

Dean nodded, following Ron still. "Yeah I think that's what he said. She definitely had red hair at least, according to Lavender." Which didn't bode well for that Bianca theory of hers. But Lavender knew what Bianca looked like, didn't she? So she'd have known if that was her she'd seen. So it was probably someone else after all.

"I said the same thing to Michael last night. About having another meeting, I mean. One Lavender can attend this time. We need as many of us as we can get together to talk about what's going on. by then, Michael's potion would have had a chance to work too, so we'll see about that as well."

Ron nodded, worry creasing his face as the lifts rolled to a stop at the DMLE level. He stepped off them and headed toward the Auror offices. "I don't like the sound of that at all. If we have this witch who isn't even Pandora killing people and she has the box and then the real Pandora appearing elsewhere, then why does this other witch have the box at all? Why isn't Pandora collecting the memories herself?" She could just be using the witch so she doesn't get caught, which would make sense, but then again, they hadn't caught this witch yet either so it wasn't like she was in any real danger as of yet.

"Yeah, we definitely need to be able to have everyone there who can make it. It's not quite as easy scheduling them like it was in school, but hopefully we can find a time that will work for everyone soon. Lavender's been doing a lot with the database so she really does need to be there." He felt a bit odd talking about Lavender after all they had gone through, but he wasn't going to pretend like she hadn't done the work she had. Especially when he had been sitting around doing absolutely nothing.

Ron led Dean back to one of the interrogation rooms, which is where they had set up the pensieve. While it wasn't the warmest of places, it gave them both privacy and security so it was the best place to do this. He opened the door for Dean and shut it behind himself once they were both inside. There was only one table in the room, two chairs and a pensieve in the center of the table. Ron had brought some pumpkin juice up, though, so it didn't seem quite so much like a normal interrogation might.

Dean shook his head as Ron thought aloud. "I don't know mate. I don't know how either of these woman are, what's going on with that box or why anyone's been targeted. I just know I'm worried about anyone having nightmares and having spots on them. I just hope someone recognizes either of these women's faces so you lot can get a decent lead."

Ron led Dean into an interrogation room and Dean noted that the presence of pumpkin juice helped cozy up the atmosphere just a little. He took a chair as Ron shut the door and cleared his throat. "I just hope Lavender doesn't feel too betrayed by most of us disagreeing with her theory about Bianca Dunstan to speak up. She's been targeted rather directly herself so she might have some sort of insight that'll help." So long as she wasn't letting fear and paranoia cloud her judgment or her memory, Dean thought, frowning slightly. Would her memory be accurate? He'd have to worry about that later.

He poured a glass of juice for Ron and for himself. "Right then, Might as well get started, yeah?"

Ron eyed Dean a bit, wondering if he was a bit too removed from the situation because he didn't have nightmares nor did Seamus. Even though Ron and Hermione weren't having them he still had a pretty good idea as to what was going on. Dean acted like he hadn't even been at the meeting though and while Ron understood not wanting to think about all this too much, it sounded odd. But he was here and offering to help so that was something. "So far what we've been saying seems to be about right, at least from what I saw - it seems to all fit, except for the two different women. That doesn't mean that Pandora doesn't have someone working for her though, which could always be the case."

He nodded at that. He knew how dramatic Lavender could be so she might not be too happy about people disregarding her accusation, true or not. "I don't know how she'll feel. I don't know anything about this bird she was talking about so I couldn't say one way or another. If she was having visions about Pandora before everyone else was even aware of her, that's something to consider, but obviously that doesn't make her a suspect. It does make her a bit odd though." He shrugged. He didn't ever think much of Divination or Seers for that matter. "It's great though, if we can get something from Lavender's memory. If it was Pandora, well - honestly I'd rather it wasn't. Just because it would be something less to worry about. No offense to Lavender, it would just mean we wouldn't be dealing with Pandora popping into people's fireplaces."

Ron sat down across from Dean and nodded. He pulled out his wand and closed his eyes. He had never done this before but he'd been told how to do it so hopefully he could get it right. He concentrated on the memory of Penelope's murder, on the night he had walked in on the murderer and let it settle on the forefront of his mind. He placed his wand at his temple and slowly pulled back, an odd sensation taking over his mind as the memory seemed to slip from his consciousness until he could not seem to remember it at all. He opened his eyes and saw the memory dangling from his wand tip and placed it into the pensieve. "Well, that's it."

Dean caught that look and wondered at it. He wasn't sure what he'd said that garnered it. Maybe he'd had an expression on his face and Ron thought he was hesitant? But Ron continued speaking and Dean forced himself to listen. He had to force himself a lot these days. much as he's cautioned Justin to not live in fear, he was having an extremely difficult time following his own advice. There were inexplicable murders daily, friends in danger of dying, people he'd at least known of already dead, and of course, Harry Potter, lost to them all. The memory of Harry's still-unsolved murder had Dean swallowing hard and sitting up straight. Yes he wanted things to be as peaceful as they'd been. But something was happening and he had too many loved ones to protect to stay so removed.

If that meant living at least a little in fear, then he was just going to have to bite the bullet, so to speak. That's why he'd volunteered to see these memories. At least then he could feel like he was actively helping, not just watching from the outside, unable to do much to help. He didn't say much else then, just agreed with Ron's assessment and hope, then watched as he retrieved the memory. With a deep breath to calm himself, Dean lowered his face into the Pensive and fell into Ron's memory of Penelope's murder.

That breath wasn't enough preparation.

The image of Ron first coming in and seeing Penelope up on the ceiling was gruesome at best. If that was only the beginning, Dean wasn't looking forward to the rest but he let the rest of the memory continue, trying to focus on the woman Ron had seen. Dark hair, ordinary features that looked too calm considering what she was doing. Dean saw the box, he saw Penelope's body. He saw every detail Ron had seen, in explicit detail. He let the memory go as far as it would take him, trying to focus more and more on the details of the woman's face and less on the scene around it.

Only then did he finally pull away, shaken. His dark skin looked slightly ashy, as blood rushed away from his skin. He exhaled, letting loose a string of swears worthy of Seamus before meeting Ron's eyes. "I'm so sorry, Ron."

Ron nodded. "It's okay," he replied because right then it was. He couldn't remember it, thanks to having the memory in the pensieve. He couldn't lie and say that it wasn't a bit of a relief. Not having the memory in his head took a weight off his shoulders. He knew he was missing a murder because he had the memory of telling Gaskin about it afterward, but taking out the actual scene of the crime still seemed to be a cleansing experience. He needed that information though, so he knew it wouldn't last long. "It could have been worse for me and couldn't have been any worse for Penelope, I don't think."

He couldn't remember all the particulars for Penelope's murder just then, but he had told Gaskin about it so he could think of some things as though it had been someone else telling him about the experience. It was a really strange feeling, having one of your memories missing from your head, especially when you knew it was gone. "Do you think that you can get anything clear from it?" he asked Dean, remembering why they were there.

Dean pressed his fingers to his temple, eyes closing again to re-visualise the face of the woman he saw. He nodded. "I saw enough. More than enough." He whipped out his journal and started with some broad strokes first, going in and filling in details after. he closed his eyes off and on, re-picturing the face. He was going to draw as much as he could by memory, but he already knew he'd have to stick his head back into the pensive once more, just to confirm the details.

"Don't put that memory back just yet," he asked Ron. "I'll need to recheck when I'm done, make sure I got it right." After a moment he said quietly, "I'm glad you're all right, Ron. I don't know why she didn't- well. I'm glad she didn't kill you too. I'm just really sorry she killed Penelope." He paused a moment to have another drink of pumpkin juice, swallowing it like it was fuel.

As if he suddenly needed something else to focus on, Dean said, "I've never taken a memory out of my head before. What's it like?" His pencil continued to fly over the paper as he spoke.

Ron nodded, not saying anything more about that. Apparently it was fairly gruesome and by what he had told Gaskin, it sounded so, but he still couldn't remember it. It felt so odd. Ron kept himself from putting the memory back in as Dean asked, though he did feel like he needed to put it back in to feel normal again.

Ron wondered if Dean was trying to distract himself or Ron, but he didn't ask. "It's weird. I can't remember the incident at all, but I know that it happened because I have talked about it with other people and I reported the whole thing to Gaskin, so I can remember giving the details of it in the report. So I have the memory of telling Gaskin about it, but I can't actually remember it. It's not normal."

"That must be such a strange sensation," Dean noted with actual curiosity. To know there was a memory missing from you head, remember things surrounding the memory, but not the memory itself. How odd.

Dean took another ten minutes to finish a preliminary sketch, finish his pumpkin juice and set down the sketchpad. "All right, I'm going to have another look, make sure i got the details as right as possible, and then return your memory. If you don't mind having a look yourself at the drawing, just for further confirmation, I think we can wrap things up here shortly."

Without waiting for a reply, Dean took a deep breath, steeled himself, and went back into the pensieve. He watched again this time focusing as hard as he could on the woman's face, if only to avoid seeing what happened to Penny. There were a few little details he needed to change and he did, once he was out of the memory again. Exhaling loudly, he set down his pencil. "Right then. I'm set."

Ron nodded in agreement. He leaned back in his chair and watched Dean work, trying not to focus on the weird feeling inside his head from the missing memory. He'd never really watched Dean draw before so it was something new for him; it was odd to see someone springing onto the page from seemingly nothing.

He leaned forward on the table when Dean spoke up again. Ron nodded. "Alright, I'll do that. I dunno how useful I'll be but I'll take a look." Ron still didn't know if there was enough to really see with the blood everywhere, but then again Ron hadn't really looked back at his own memory yet. He watched Dean stick his face back into the pensieve, wondering if he should do so himself to affirm the look of the sketch himself. He didn't like the idea of it but it would mean a better result in the end.

When Dean said he was done, Ron nodded. "Okay. Let me look at it." Ron leaned forward and stuck his face into the pensieve, loathe as he was to do so and was taken back to the afternoon when he walked in on the murder of Penelope Clearwater. He waited until the murderer came into sight and tried to focus on her face and any details of it he could possibly pick up that he might have missed the day he was actually there. When he pulled back out he looked at Dean's sketch thoughtfully. "I think it's good. Er, the nose could be a bit pointier maybe?"

Dean sat back and stretched his fingers, watching as Ron looked back into his memory. He said nothing just staring between Ron and the drawing while he waited for Ron to finish.

When he did, Dean picked back up his pencil and graphite as eraser shavings flow over the page as he fixed the nose, sharpening the angles a bit. Yeah that did look more like her now. "I think we're all set here, Ron," Dean replied with a firm nod.

Ron nodded. He scooped the memory back out from the pensieve with his wand and replaced it back to his temple. It slowly seeped back into his head and finally he could remember everything again like he could before. "Right. Well, thanks so much for this Dean. Can we go ahead and make a copy of it for the DMLE?" If the DA and the DMLE both had copies it would be a good start for working on the case of the murderer, even though technically the DA was an unofficial group.

Ron still had no idea who the woman might be, but at least they could show the picture around and someone else might recognise her. It was certainly a good start if nothing else.

Dean watched Ron put the memory back, slightly fascinated by the process. If there had been other reasons behind it, he would have liked to learn more about it, but this was not the time. "You're welcome," he replied. "And yeah, go ahead, whatever you need to do. I think the more people who see it the better, to a point. It could help someone recognise her."

Dean stood up then, suddenly anxious to leave, but at least it was done. they had the portrait. Hopefully, it would actually help. "Let me know if there's anything else I can do, all right?"

Ron nodded in response, glad that he would be able to show the others around the DMLE the picture and hopefully get more people knowledgeable of the woman's face. He took a blank sheet of parchment and with his wand, transposed the image from Dean's sketch over to the blank parchment. Now they could make as many copies as needed.

He picked up his copy and nodded as Dean stood up; Ron handed Dean his copy. "Yeah, I will. Thanks again, mate. You're brilliant at this and I know it was shite to do it, but it was really helpful, so thanks."
