eli is from the darkest timeline ([info]skittish) wrote in [info]pandorarpg,

Characters: Eli Chambers & Adrian Pucey
Setting: Ministry of Magic, by the lifts around 1100
Rating: Worksafe, because they are at work...
Summary: The Living Inferi invasion hits the Ministry and Eli wants to take it apart and figure out why...and all before his morning coffee break.

It wasn't uncommon for Eli to take a break from his labs late in the morning to go for a walk and stretch his legs. He had always claimed that time away helped him process whatever he had been working on and it wasn't an unfounded belief. There had been a number of times when standing in the queue for coffee he had figured out that one last piece and gone rushing back to the Department of Mysteries caffeine forgotten.

Today was not the day to forget the caffeine regardless of any great breakthrough. He had been putting in extra hours the past two days trying to make headway before Friday on his unsanctioned project regarding the nightmare-memories. Eli was getting close and having the nightmare again last night had given him some of the details he was missing, but he couldn't expect to create a replica as close to his own memories simply because this wasn't his. Still, he was sure that by Friday they would have something to work with and a decent selection of test subjects to choose from at the birthday supper. Hopefully they would have answers soon about how it worked and then he could figure out a way to make it stop.

The lift doors opened and Eli straightened himself out to exit. It took him the span of four steps to realize that the man in grey wasn't just annoying that woman with the stack of files, but actually hurting her. That wasn't right, not right at all. It wasn't his place, but now that he saw it he couldn't just let it happen. Not when there was something familiar about what the man was wearing that didn't sit right with him. "Hey!" He said, tapping the man on the shoulder with his wand. "What do you think you're doing?"

The man turned to him, allowing the woman the space to slip away. Of course that meant that the man came at him with no real fine motor skills just sort of looking to maim like an inferius or something. His mind paused at, which allowed the man to back him into a corner. Inferius? Why would there be an inferius roaming the halls of the Ministry? Suddenly any sense of surprise or fear was replaced with a sort of curiosity with his mind working in overdrive on how to leverage this situation.

"Why don't you do something useful and call for help?" He called out to the woman still staring at him in horror. Absolutely useless, he was sure, but he still had a wand and the knowledge that these things were afraid of light and fire, but otherwise rather magic resistant.

Apparently the motto for the month was if it wasn't one bloody thing, it was another. The death of someone in the Department of Mysteries, the murder of Harry Potter inside the bloody ministry building, a rash of nightmares that were apparently memories, breakout of inexplicable spots tied to those memories, murders of people who likely all had both memories and spots, a mole in the DMLE, even ridiculous journal glitches...was anything going to go right?

Actually yes. His date with Melinda Bobbin last night had gone extremely right, and was certainly a bright spot in everything going on. It had a smile on his face as he headed toward the lifts, on his way to speak to someone in another department regarding a minor detail he thought might no be so minor. That was when he saw something wrong.

Something that looked like an inferius harassing a woman before it was distracted by someone else. Chambers. Adrian knew him. But that wasn't his concern. His concern was that the inferius wasn't alone. Adrian drew his wand and before he could cast light or fire at one of the things, he cast a spell that sent an alarm, warning DMLE that there was danger within the ministry. Then he hurled a blinding light spell at one of the inferi, immediately yelling to Chambers after. "Chambers, what the hell's going on here?"

Eli created a sort of rope of fire with a careful movement of his wand. He just wanted the thing to get away from him or at least stop going after him like he was some tasty morsel. Unsure if it was his spell or Adrian's arrival, but it gave him space to shift along the wall until he was at least backed up toward the lifts. It was at least a way out.

"I honestly haven't a clue, although it would appear we have a sudden onset inferius problem and all I wanted was a cup of a coffee." Instead it was a shot of adrenaline because this was sort of exciting. It definitely a novel sort of experience. Later there might be time to realize exactly how bad this sort of situation was, but right now that wasn't a productive emotion so he pushed it aside.

"Although," he said reaching behind him to call the lift, "if you could manage to restrain one we might be able to figure that out."

Adrian didn't hesitate. No sooner had Eli suggested it than Adrian had shot his own ropes from his wand, binding the other - he hesitated to call it inferi but what else could he call it? He briefly stopped to make sure the woman was all right, before he realised there were more. Down the hall way, he saw a few others as more people rushed about. Some were DMLE or other qualified witches and wizards, while other were just trying to get out of harm's way. The alarum was helping.

A few people had taken it upon themselves to direct traffic so a panic didn't ensue. Adrian made his way over to Eli. he got a better look at the inferius he himself had bound and frowned. "Hate to state the obvious here but something isn't right here. How did these things get in here, to start with?" Not to mention even for inferi, something seemed off about them. "We ought to find out how many there are."

"I don't think the how many question matters as much as the what they are or why they are here." Logically that would allow them a way to stop them. More importantly, Eli needed to know what they were. He had never actually seen an inferi up close and it was a rather unique opportunity especially with all the talk of dead men the past couple of days.

"But if you need to go, please, don't let me stop you." Eli didn't really care either way, although how he proceeded next would be different if he had an audience or not. Witnesses were always a delicate matter as they forced him to act to a more stricter ethical code.

As the lift open behind him, he triggered it to keep the doors open. It was an escape route and at the moment a makeshift lab. Eli maneuvered the bound body into the lift, trapping it so that he could run an initial scan on it, wanting to confirm vitals and get an estimate of how long dead this thing was. Except - a colorful Welsh phase escaped him.

"These things have a pulse." Okay so maybe the numbers mattered right now because that meant they weren't inferius. Eli looked back down the hall trying to get a feel for how many things were walking about and something about their clothes bothered him. "Prisoners?" He said musing out loud. Adrian wasn't even close to Argus, but if he could talk at something it helped the thought process along. "That would mean some sort of break out and given the time needed to travel that distance, this situation could be worse than we imagine - apparation, portkeys, or even something else all together could be happening. Although who could put them under the imperius on a presumably mass scale and with such skill?"

Adrian didn't bother to point out he'd already expressed concern as to how these things had gotten into the ministry. Answers could come later. Action needed to be taken now. But that didn't mean Adrian couldn't get a good look at them while he tried to round them up.

They were all - at least what he could see because he'd only seen now and now a third coming around the corner - wearing the same sort of pyjamas, ones that looked familiar. It hit him suddenly as he bound the newest one as it headed for him, that they were wearing what prisoners in Azkaban wore.

Behind him, Chambers said they had a pulse and that confirmed Adrian's thought about the clothing. What the hell was going on here? What were this things? They clearly weren't conventionally alive, but if they had a pulse... "Try to see if we can keep at least one to have a look at. Something's really not right here."

If there was a prison break from Azkaban...Adrian felt cold at the though of seeing his uncle like this. Were these just regular prisoners? "They're not just imperiused," he replied. "Imperius doesn't make you look like an inferius. There's more to it than just a controlled breakout," he added.

Eli tried not to groan. His dog was so much better. Argus knew better than to talk back. Adrian talking, saying strands of thoughts already in his head was just distracting him from the point. He looked back at his test subject in the lift, still mostly contained and then back at the corridor. "Well, I have one and I'm not so keen to stick around here."

He stepped inside the lift, wand at the ready pointed toward the bound thing. "So, the question remains are you going to stay and defend or do you want to get to the bottom of this?" Eli gave Adrian a look, clear that he wasn't going to wait long. He needed answers and to get to those he needed more than he had on his person and not to have to worry more of them coming at him.

Adrian shook his head. He'd forgotten he wasn't fight side by side or back to back with another DMLE staffer, like Cade or Aggie. He worked well with them and usually knew what they were thinking or wanted to do in a given situation. Right now, he had no bloody idea what exactly Eli was planning, but his own curiosity was nagging at him. He was relived to see two more senior DMLE staff come round then and his decision was made. "They can defend. Let's find out what's behind all this."

One more fiery binding came out of his wand and then he nodded at the burly Auror with a large scar down his face before gesturing at Eli. "If you've got somewhere you're going, lead on. This needs investigating."

Eli didn't say anything, just waited until Adrian joined him in the lift and he pressed the button to take them to the Department of Mysteries. It was a secure there and his lab had everything he needed. If it came down to an issue of clearance, Pucey was an auror and these were dire circumstances. More importantly, it wasn't like Eli just left out sensitive information hanging about his lab. He certainly didn't trust his assistants not to muck up the hard work he did put in.

When the lift dinged and the doors opened on the ninth level, Eli exchanged a look with the man at the desk daring him to say something. It was actually the standard sort of greeting between the two of them. Eli glanced over his shoulder at Adrian and their test subject. "You start preparing that thing for transport while I get you cleared to come through." It was almost a question, except that he wasn't really giving Adrian the option to back out.

Leaving Adrian to arrange transport of the angry man fighting against his binds, he went over to explain quite plainly of the incident happening upstairs and how Auror Adrian Pucey was assisting him so that they could figure out just what was going on and properly neutralize the threat.

Adrian bound the not-inferi further but it still lurched and moved like it was trying to attack. So rather than try to harm it, he simply restrained it and pulled it along behind him.

As Adrian followed Eli, he let himself go over what he'd just seen. These things that looked like inferi, but didn't at all respond like them. Any inferi would shy away from light or fire, but these ones...they didn't really react at all. They just kept coming, no matter what was done to them. Between that and Eli's revelation that they were still alive, Adrian was unsettled at best. He glanced at the thing with them, eyes narrowed and calculating.

Adrian noticed the level they got out on and pursed his lips. He let Eli explain, mostly because he wanted to know what the other man was up to. If it gave them an swers as to what these things were, how they'd gotten in, or how to get rid of them, he was all for it. Chambers didn't seem very chatty otherwise, so Adrian held his questions for now. Instead he focused on keeping the creature under control.

It took more patience then he really had to deal with the puny man who thought he actually mattered. However, now that he had an auror coming along with him, it was safer to take this through the official channels. He was already going into murky waters, but they were familiar and he knew what to do here.

"Come on," he said sounding impatient, although it was more anticipation. There was something he didn't know and the ability to seek answers were within his reach. Eli started down the long corridor to the circular chamber. He stopped just before going through the door, to look back at Adrian and make sure they were at least somewhat on the same page. "We're going to my lab, you do understand protocol for this department, right?"

Adrian had to pause to wrangle the creature back under control. Nothing seemed to deter it from its intentions, which seemed to be sheer destruction. By this point he was almost as curious as Eli as to what made these things tick, but he was still far more concerned with getting it under control and then preferably destroyed. He would settle for contained if he had to.

Adrian had only ever been in the department of mysteries an extremely limited number of times and always with some supervision, possibly not just because it wasn't his department but because of who he was, and who his family members were. However he knew enough that it was called the department of mysteries for a reason. What he saw in there would have to remain that: a mystery. No in depth explanations, and certainly no spreading the news. He nodded shortly, slightly impatient himself. He was aware. "Yes. Let's get to work on this thing."

In this case, Eli was the supervision, which was probably why he had been given a bit more of a hard time. Adrian wasn't the only one with questionable family connections - both by blood and by law. Of course he now knew that his father wasn't the bad man he was made out to be, he was. Although bad and good were such limiting classifications.

He made no big show of it, just directed Adrian through the circular room and into his lab. Eli wasn't exactly surprised to see one of his assistants there. It would have upset him more if the man had disappeared and yet he was going to kick him out either way - no need to involve someone else in this yet. "I need the room for at least the next hour."

The man nodded, quickly putting away whatever he was working on and securing the space. At least they all knew how to maintain his own very specific protocols so that no one touched things they weren't meant to. As the assistant left, Eli pulled out his wand and summoned a chair with restraints into the open space in the room. "Why don't you move that thing into the chair, make sure he's secure, and rather than interrupt later I'll even let you share you theories right now." Better to get that out of the way while he was pulling the supplies he needed.

Adrian moved the living thing into the chair, his nostrils flaring slightly at the perceived patronising he thought he heard at Eli's last comment. He'd even let him share theories? what as though he was being humored? Adrian frowned, wondering if he was reading too much into one word. Instead of saying anything on that matter, Adrian just replied, "This was a prisoner from Azkaban for certain. We both recognised the clothing it's wearing. It's not dead but it doesn't react to pain, as though it cannot feel. It's almost like it's empty. Someone used some kind of magic to make this happen, to make this thing sheer walking destruction. Releasing them into the ministry by the dozen was meant to cause fear, panic or possibly just a distraction.

"I'm more concerned with exactly what was done to get this thin in this state though, and I presume you are about to employ some methods to determine that?" Adrian fixed the very last restraint in place, watching in distaste as the thing still struggled. What would make this thing stop?

It wasn't outright patronizing. It was just Eli Chambers being Eli Chambers. He didn't just think he was smarter than most people he met, he actually knew it. So, in a way he was humoring him, but he was also sort of gauging how smart Adrian was.

Eli nodded along with the assessment. "So first we confirm it is in fact living, then rule out the imperius curse, perhaps even by testing what sort of pain threshold this thing has." Which would also determine if it could feel or not - and then if he knew if it could not feel, well that opened things up to a whole new realm of possibility.

He started in on the first test, muttered to himself and scribbling things down until he paused. "That's curious." With his wand he poked at the badge on the thing's top. "I don't believe that prisoners would be allowed any sort of decorative item." Eli carefully plucked the badge off the man's pajamas, being mindful not to let his teeth get him. It might not feel pain, but it certainly felt something struggling as it was against it's bindings.

"Do you recognize this?" Rather than interrupt his work, he levitated the badge toward Adrian for him to examine. In part because he didn't know what it was and also because he figured it would be best to give the auror something to do.

Adrian watched the not-dead thing move struggling against its bonds, still seeming unaware of its condition. It had been wounded, and it bled, but it paid no attention to its injuries. Instead it simply continued to try to get free, presumably just to continue wreaking havoc.

Adrian carefully took the pin under control of his own levitation spell, not at all interested in touching it with his bare hands until he knew what it was. It could have been a cursed item for all he knew.

Whatever it was, it didn't seem to stop the creature. Whatever the pin was, assuming it was magical, which was easily detected, it wasn't causing the effect on the not dead creatures. Whatever was might have been cast directly on them instead. "You're correct. Prisoners weren't, and no, I don't recognise this," he said aloud. "I suspect there's something curious about this pin though. Did you happen see if any others were wearing them?"

"I wasn't really looking at the others." No, he was far too concerned at what was right in front of him. Eli had fixated on the individual only noticing the others enough to see they were all similar dressed. "However, if we assume the others were then perhaps this gives credence to the portkey thought earlier? Presumably it would be a time activated given they seemed to show up at the same moment." He spared Adrian a glance, not as useless as he had been before, maybe he just needed to be focused.

"When your finished examining it, put it in the tray just there, we'll see if someone in the portkey office can make sense of it later." Someone he could trust to not mess it up, which might be a little more difficult than just handing it off, but he wanted to know exactly what was happening.

"After that if you could help to restrain it better, I would like to pull a brain map to see what's really going on here." And not knowing what it was, he didn't want to find a way to get it unconscious, but it would need to be a bit stiller.

Adrian hadn't had much of a chance to see if the others were wearing them either. The badges were small enough to not be seen unless you were close enough, or at least not in the middle of fighting what was wearing it. "That's a safe assumption and can be easily tested," Adrian responded. One could detect if an object was a portkey if one actually knew to look rather than accidentally touch it and find out the hard way. It was part of the reason he wasn't touching it with his hands. He'd no idea what it might do. It clearly wasn't what was causing these things to be.

Adrian gave it another look, taking in a few more details before setting it down. Then he bound the creature even further, restricting its movement to completely futile struggles. It could hardly move more than an inch in either direction. "Whenever you're ready then." He was intrigued to see what was going on inside its head, if anything.

Double checking to make sure the man was secure, Eli set to casting the spells required to pull up a picture of what he was looking at. He needed to know the landscape before he even tried to prod and pluck at what was inside. And really that wasn't the sort of thing he should be doing with an unauthorized audience.

He made a face at the first image, not liking and not believing what he saw. Eli shook his head, taking a deep breath and trying to reign in any wayward emotions. Right now he needed to be a man of science and that meant he didn't facts, which did not have the space for fear or something not unlike dread because this hit upon a very deep fear of his. So, he did the scanning spell again just to make sure, this time even doing the extra to pull up a visual for him to see.

"There's nothing there aside from basic activity in the brain stem and a little in the cerebellum, except for that area there with abnormal activity, although that could account for whatever is controlling these things. Clinically, it appears that this brain has been stripped of everything." For a moment it was beautiful in the way that violence could be. Eli had never seen such massage level damage.

But then the whole world lurched. His usually sure, steady hands started to tremor and he had to let image go. The level of skill needed to maintain it no longer something he could manage. Instead, he put a bit more space between himself in the thing because he certainly wasn't going to call it anyone else. "Adrian," he said trying to project a clear calm voice, when he was anything but, "Can you summarize what that indicates?" Eli knew, but he needed someone else to say it.

Adrian stood close by, ready to do anything necessary in case the creature somehow broke free, which at this point was pretty much impossible. However, Adrian didn't like to take chances. He kept his eyes on Chambers too though, not entirely certain what he was doing.

When Eli gave his assessment, Adrian stared at him for a long uneasy moment. He swallowed and replied, "No brain activity. An empty shell being controlled. I don't like the sound of it, but It sounds to me as though that perfectly describes someone who's received a Dementor's Kiss."

He was uneasy because it hadn't really occurred to him to think about what happened to the bodies of those who were kissed. They weren't exactly dead. They were...empty. Like this one. Merlin, it would explain the prisoner's clothes, wouldn't it?

He had to say it, didn't it? Eli's whole body shuddered at the mere phrase because it was a scary one. To have everything taken away - or at least next to nothing. It scared him because he was a man who prized his mind, his ability to rationalize, to think, and yes, even feel - but for that to be gone...it was almost too much. And even before the bodies of the Kissed were reanimated they had to kept somewhere, not dead, but not alive either.

"And I would agree to your conclusion," he said staring at the thing in the chair. As much as he didn't want to look at it, he couldn't look away. Eli was staring right down at his greatest fear and any sort of greater mode of thought sort of went away. Right now his main concern was to keep himself together and let himself be fueled by some sort curiosity because people were afraid of things he didn't understand. Right now he had his worst fear in front of him and he could take it apart, figure out how it worked, start to understand it.

"Do you suppose anyone would be against a more thorough dissection?" He said finally, the words sort of slipping from him.

Adrian didn't blame Eli for his reaction. The idea was horrid enough to him, and that was without knowing Eli's personal fears. "Then another questions is who did this and how as it managed." He didn't exactly move away from teh thing, but he didn't draw any closer either. He still studied it though as if looking for any more visual clues.

He stopped at Eli's question. "Well this is your department, Chambers. In mine, I'd have to go to my superiors now, if only because of my tenuous positions. Is it customary here in this department for you to proceed? If so, I'd suggest we go ahead. It's probably best to present as much information as possible."

Tenuous positions. That was an interesting turn to phase and he supposed he had those as well, with his father and his father-in-law, although he had done a noble job of re-establishing himself. Normally he would have gone ahead with no second thought because he needed to know, however, with Adrian here and that extra variable being presented, he hesitated.

Even if this was his lab and the case was relevant to his research given what he knew about what he did, perhaps it was best to at least bring in one of his assistant and no have the auror mucking about. "Well, if that is the case, then I am going to have to establish my own wards and kindly escort you back out of the department."

He set about to setting runes to make a sort of containment field for the thing. Eli could make it more specific later, but right now he didn't care if the thing could move a little. Although there was still the chance that Adrian's spells could hold. "If you will," he said motioning to the door once he was through.

Adrian's eyebrows both went up at his sudden dismissal, then snapped down into an unpleasant expression. He understood part of the reasoning behind it. Were their positions reversed, he wouldn't want to take chances that could very well wind up getting his sacked, especially if he had a witness.

He relaxed his shoulders and nodded shortly. "Good luck with your experiment then and if you find anything useful, please let me know." He walked to the door without waiting for an answer and left, intended to go back right into the fray. He had his own work to do.
