Jasper was halfway through the Prelude of Bach's Suite No. 1 when he heard his phone ringing. He'd been having difficulty sussing out the final chapter of his novel since...well, since Halloween, and his agent had gently reminded him earlier that day just how swiftly his deadline was approaching.
The added stress hadn't helped matters, to the point where he was still up despite having tried to going to bed almost an hour ago. But at least that meant he was awake when his mobile rang at - Jasper glanced at the clock on his cable box as he carefully set the cello aside and got up - a quarter to midnight. He reached the phone on his bed by the third ring. "Bianca?" He'd seen the name lighting up the screen and his heart was already in his throat before he even asked, "What's wrong?" Something had to be wrong for her to be calling so late.
