Business as usual
Characters: Adrian Pucey and Ernie Macmillan
Setting: DMLE, around 11 AM, after Ron's debacle, Monday Nov 10th
Summary: Adrian and Ernie talk about what the hell's been going on, possibly swap theories.
Rating: Work safe

Adrian did his best to keep a mostly straight face during Ron's...incident, but considering he knew exactly what was to happen, it was difficult to do so. He did manage to watch long enough to be able to tell Agatha how successful her prank was. But then of course it was back to business as usual, and Adrian went back to drowning himself in paperwork, looking for any possible connections he might have missed. The murders kept happening and after their briefing this morning, Adrian felt almost personally chastised that they hadn't gotten any farther just yet.

The only connections he knew of were that the victims supposedly had all been suffering nightmares, and had those spots. Like his mother. Frowning, Adrian sat back in his chair. This whole thing was just a bloody mess was all, and he wanted it solved already. He got up to take a walk. He needed to clear his head.

Ern was quite aware of the Ron Weasley debacle as it happened that at that very moment he had finished what needed to be done that morning and was heading over to see whether he could have a casual word with one of the Aurors on their most recent cases.

It was rather difficult to miss the huge blow-up doll on Weasley's desk. Feeling as horrified as Ron looked, Ern pretended to look at his watch in surprise and hurry off to an imaginary meeting. Perhaps that's what earned him his nickname from Zacharias... Even if it were an absolute lie.

The second time around, Ern had made a point of just checking to ensure that there was no blow-up doll on the desk. Just as he arrived, he noticed Pucey was approaching. "Pucey, can I have a quick word? It's about the cases."

Adrian looked up in surprise at the sound of Ernie's voice. Curious as to what he wanted to talk about the cases, as well as hopeful that another mind might help prod his along new lines of thinking.

"Yes, I've got a few moments. I was just taking a bit of a breather. And deciding to be absent if Weasley happened to have something else explode out his desk," he added with a touch of humor. "Care to walk and talk? I thought I might have a bit of coffee, wake up my mind a bit."

Ern grinned at the reference to the Weasley incident, and simultaneously felt at least a bit sorry for the guy. He would've himself died if that ever happened to him.

"Sure," Ernie said. "I've been at my desk for most of the morning--a stretch would be welcomed--just since there are a few higher risk areas that needed to be covered due to the recent incidents. We're quite fortunate that Christmas will be soon upon us and most folks are looking for some means to supplement their incomes. And besides that, I can use a coffee myself." Well, probably for different reasons as Ern found that he hadn't been able to get to sleep following another of the nightmares.

"I feel much the same. If I didn't have a walk within the next hour, I might just forget how to do so." Adrian led the way to the pantry area, glad that someone had brought in some sort of pastries that hadn't all been eaten just yet.

He nodded to what Ernie said but he was more curious about what the other man wanted to discuss. "You said you wanted to talk about the cases? What about exactly?" He poured himself a cup of coffee and then stood aside to let Ernie have one.

Ern had poured himself a cup of coffee and foregone the milk, just since he needed the caffeine and wanted to get straight to the heart of the matter. He took a sip before starting.

"Well primarily about the nature of these so-called nightmares," Ernie said, leaving out the bit about the prophecies that Michael had spoken on Lavender's behalf about. He'll probably bring it up afterwards if it did fit in somewhere.

He looked into his coffee for a moment, as if trying to read something the dark liquid. "I guess my main concern is that these aren't dreams, but are memories. It leaves one to wonder why the murderer would be interested in these memories. Or if it happens to be one big coincidence--I wouldn't mind if it were a coincidence, but it's not something we can take comfort in just yet."

Adrian looked up sharply. This was news to him. He hadn't been made aware that these weren't just nightmares. "What do you mean, memories? I hadn't heard this before."

He shook his head. "Whatever they are, they aren't a coincidence. Not when it seems as though a fair number of people who've died since Zurlo had been having them." It might have been everyone, but some were still unconfirmed. But what do you mean about them being memories?"

Ern looked up from his coffee at Adrian, noticing that his attention was most certainly caught. "Well, it's just a theory from an observation of a collection of these experiences. But they appear to be memories of victims of torture. For example, there were even matching memories from the same event--just different perspectives. And they all included a woman--who I believe was the torturer--with red hair and blue eyes. Who some people have suspected is Pandora Zurlo."

"It would explain why these 'dreams' are so vivid, and why they can't seem to be nullified by draught of dreamless sleep," he added with an uncomfortable certaintly, knowing that from firsthand experience.

Adrian stroked his chin absently as Ernie spoke, realizing he was going to need a shave or at least trim soon. But that idle thought was shoved to the background as Adrian processed the new theory. "It might explain why they were so vivid and detailed," he murmured, half to himself. "Matching memories of the same event? You mean different people having the same nightmare, just different perspectives? yes I could see how that is extremely unlikely. But from a memory's standpoint, it makes a bit more sense. Each person would just be seeing the memory from a different point of view."

Adrian nodded at Ernie's last statement. "My mother has tried the dreamless sleep draughts. They haven't exactly worked for her either. So now there's a common thread in these nightmares turned memories besides the subject matter. A woman. Why do people think it's Pandora Zurlo, and if I may ask, where is this information coming from?"

"Yes, the same event--or 'nightmare'--in different perspectives," Ern confirmed.

"Well, it is still just speculation, but the woman with features observed in these dreams would match available descriptions of Pandora Zurlo," he said. "I've heard from some folks who have been doing research on the matter. I wouldn't dismiss all theories without further evidence from this theory. And on the matter of it being a memory rather than a dream--it's partially from reports that I hear from others and personal experience. Would I be correct in guessing that a black spot appears somewhere on your mother?"

Adrian nodded. "Yes, on her neck. She tried to hide it at first, but then I discovered it was more than a mere blemish. I'll speak with her tonight, see if she'll tell me any more. She's been quite reluctant to discuss the nightmares - memories, rather - at all."

It was putting Adrian in a strange place. He did still have some feelings of care and concern toward his mother. She had raised him after all, as poor a job she'd sometimes done of it. He wouldn't be where he was without her, in more ways than one. To know she was very likely in danger, but not know how to stop something from happening to her - while part of him had always wished her out of his life - well he was conflicted at best.

"Are these sources of yours willing to come forward and put anything on record?"

Ern could understand the feeling of not wishing to discuss the nightmares. He didn't even really feel inclined to speak about it himself, nor disclose it with many if anyone really.

"It's understandable, given that it is a rather disturbing phenomena," he replied when Adrian spoke about his mother. "Has it been confirmed? The link between the marks, so-called-nightmares, and murders?."

"I would imagine that they would if I ask them," Ern said with a shrug in response to Adrian's question about the sources. He didn't see why that wouldn't happen. "I would need to check to see if they would, of course."

Adrian exhaled. "Not completely confirmed. We're still waiting on some more information but so far it's too strong a correlation to be coincidence. I would advise anyone with the marks or nightmares to be extremely cautious."

At Ernie's reply, Adrian nodded. "Please do. It would help to have something akin to witness testimonies. If they agree on things, it may give us more to go on." He regarded Ernie for a moment and then added, "I'm glad you told me about this, Macmillan."

"Of course," Ern said, feeling as if there was a stone at the pit of his stomach. "I would hope that the people involved with taking the names of those who are affected by these occurences will be supervised--or even surveilled--appropriately since for all we know it could also be a group." He could feel the paranoia make an appearance. Just for a moment.
Just since it sounded like the days over five years ago. And of course, he was one of those affected by this whole matter.

"It is the responsible thing to do," Ern said with a simple shrug. He hesitated for a moment when he thought about the other thing that he should convey. Just because of the conversation that was had at the DA meeting. "I suppose I would be remiss if I didn't mention that I had heard of someone who had experienced a vision of a lady with red hair--another reason to think that this has to do with Pandora Zurlo. I'll ensure that this is also reported."

"That is very true," Adrian mused. "We know so little about all thins though, so at this point any information that could lead to something more concrete would be much appreciated." Though he wasn't so sure about visions. He didn't put too much stock in them himself, but he couldn't write them off entirely. Whoever it was having this vision would have to have it checked, probably by the Department of Mysteries, and then they'd have to share any relevant information.

All in all it was still frustrated, but bit by bit they were getting somewhere. "I'll keep tabs on the Department of Mysteries, see if anyone's reported anything that could be connected, I'll see if we can keep a look out for when that vision gets reported as well."

Adrian sighed. "It may turn out to be a false start, mere paranoia, but if we excluded it now and it turns out significant..." he trailed off knowing he didn't need to finish the sentence aloud.
