Characters: Penelope Clearwater, Jaynedora & (later) Ron Weasley
Setting: Her flat, Dittany Heights, Diagon Alley; November 10, 2003, 14:15.
Rating: R for profanity and violence.
Summary: Looking too hard yields answers.

Prior to meeting with Ron, Penelope had decided to try to gather some more information on the Jane woman, whom she was more and more convinced was a witch. Who else could've pulled off such a "clean" murder, without leaving a mark? Her efforts started early in the morning as she experienced her "nightmare" once more and couldn't return to sleep. But now she had something that needed to be done.

He who has a why to live can bear almost any how.

The effects of the "nightmare", as horrifying as they were happened to be soon overcome with a walk outside Diagon Alley to an area where she could make a call with her cellphone. After a couple of minutes of pleasant conversation with the Millie about a sweater that her cousin Jane must've left at Lloyd's place, she had given her name and a phone number. In a way she hoped that this Jane person would opt to contact her, so that she could--maybe--have a chance to confront her.

She puttered around her flat for the rest of the morning, picking up her journal and putting it down on her desk without writing in it a couple of times before starting on an article for Witch's Weekly. Something for the advice column, which she occasionally written for when the witch who normally did it went on vacation.

Ron coughed loudly when she released his neck, leaning his head back and sitting up as best he could to try and get the blood out of his lungs and throat. He focused on this for as long as it took until his breathing went back to normal and he could finally begin work on the ropes. He began wiggling his arms back and forth slowly, trying to work the ropes up toward his neck or at least enough so that he could get his wand arm free. It took him at least ten minutes but he finally got the ropes loose enough that he could get his hands free and pull them off himself. Now it was a matter of dealing with his leg. He applied some basic healing spells to seal the cut so that he was able to put some weight on it. He tested it and winced; he'd have to see a real healer, but for now it would do. He neck was a bit sore but it was nothing major.

His next move was to go to the Ministry and report this to Gaskin. They needed to come and seal off the area, deal with Penelope's body and he needed to give his report of the situation before he forgot any of the important details, specifically about how the spot turned into smoke, the box that had collected it, and the dark haired woman who might very well be the witch that Penelope was going to tell him about who killed her Muggle brother Lloyd on the 8th. Which meant he had to report about Lloyd Clearwater's death as well, because Gaskin didn't know about it. His mind was swimming with information already and he worked to compartmentalize it like he always did: he placed the bits and pieces on an imaginary chessboard, each bit that was connected to another was a move that he would make to ultimately win the game. But they were far from winning this one just yet.

He began setting the proper wards to keep anyone without the proper clearance from entering Penelope's flat. The last thing they needed was someone else happening upon her body - which again made him think of his brother Percy. He knew that his second stop was going to be his brother's flat. He wasn't going to enjoy telling him this story in the least, especially the part where he was too late to save her. Ron apparated from Penelope's flat with a small pop.
