The surprise had been blown but it didn't mean that Ernie was going to do a lesser job at the party, nor did it mean that it wasn't going to be a great time. What his goal in the end was to celebrate his best friend, of course. Ernie tried his best to forgive Zacharias during these trying times, but the man was getting on his nerves. He felt bad for Smith, and had accompanied Heather to the funeral that morning, but steered clear of his former classmate, just since he wasn't sure what he'd do if he had heard another smart remark.

He shook his head as if in an effort to dislodge his former classmate from his mind. Ernie had ordered enough pizza, and put out enough crisps and other snacks to feed a small army. He would rather have too much than too little, and had similarly erred on the side of caution when it came to drink. He was aware that Bianca was going to bring in some cake, and all was well in the world. For now, at least.

Dean played dirty, Justin thought as he moved away from the door and turned the handle to let Dean in. Dean knew him so well, well enough to know he couldn't not help a friend. Furthermore, even though Zacharias bloody Smith was Justin's least favourite person at the moment, he didn't want him to get punched on the day of his father's funeral, of all days.

He was thankful he hadn't turned on the bedroom light, and left is off as he allowed Dean to slip through the door. He could hear commotion out in the flat, but all it did was make him want to hide away even more. Once Dean was inside, Justin closed the door behind him, shutting out the rest of the world.

"I'm sorry he said that about you and Seamus," Justin finally said, softly. "This is all my fault..."

Dean hadn't intending to play dirty. he simply didn't want to actually get into a row with Zacharias, and he thought he and Justin could distract each other. It was either that or Dean was going to leave, assuming Zacharias was still there. He may have seemed outwardly calm, but inside he was raging. He wouldn't have been so angry if Zacharias had just insulted him, but to systematically go through people there, especially Justin and people who'd likely never done a thing wrong...

Dean stepped inside and without a word he just engulfed Justin in a hug. "You say it's your fault again and I withhold all curry privileges for the rest of the year, all right? However could Smith being the biggest, most complete arse he's ever been be your fault? He said what he said because he's a miserable prat and he only knows how to get attention in the most negative way possible."

Didn't mean Dean was about to forgive him a word he'd said.

"You do realize there's barely two months left in the year, right?" Justin said, not wanting to argue, but having to state it for the record.

"And he's right, this is my fault. If I hadn't gone to the funeral this morning, Zach probably wouldn't have shown up. I thought he deserved to have a friend there who knew what he was going through. I said I was being selfish and going to his dad's funeral because I couldn't go to mine, but that was cuz I didn't want him to feel I was pitying him or something."

He leaned on Dean, his head on his friend's shoulder as his arms wrapped around him tightly.

"And he's right. I am a useless layabout. I'm just glad Sarah left after the cake, so she didn't have to hear that."

"Of course. I can only withhold so long; I'm not a monster," Dean teased.

"So you think your attempt at being supportive means it's your fault he comes to your birthday party and insults you and all your friends? in what way is that at all your fault? It it's your fault he's a lousy cunt with no respect for anyone, especially not himself. No matter what you felt or did, it isn't your fault how he chose to respond."

Dean couldn't quite find Justin's face in the dark to look at him, so he just rested his head on top of Justin's. "You're not useless, Just. You do layabout quite well, but you're not a bit useless. You're the best friend most of us here have; that's why we're all here. You don't have to be working all day to be considering useful to the people who love you.

Justin nodded against Dean's shoulder. He still had his doubts, particularly since he had felt useless ever since his failed attempt at hiding Ernie away from everything. He was just Justin Finch-Fletchley - what could he do to help protect his friends?

"For the first time in years, I wouldn't shag Zach fucking Smith if he begged me." The words could be taken humorously, but Justin was serious. This time, Zach had taken things too far, and Justin didn't know if he could keep defending him anymore.

	Dean pulled back, trying to find Justin's face in the dark to look at him. It was difficult but he tried anyway. "Well good, because you can do so so much better than that waste of skin." Justin nodded, but then looked at the door as if it were a snake about to bite him - something that had featured in his nightmares ever since he was 12.

"I can't leave without saying goodbye, though." He didn't want to go back out there. Not only was Zach there, but everyone would look at him and feel sorry for him. He didn't want that, didn't want them to see him upset like this. He was the one who was supposed to cheer them up.

Ern needed to remove himself from the rest of the party. As far as he knew, Zacharias was retreating at this point, and it seemed at least somewhat likely that he would go and be gone without any conflict. As far as he knew at least.

He took care to clean glass as he walked to his room, the direction in which he saw Justin and Dean go. He knocked on the door. "Are you alright, Justin?"

Dean started at the sound of a knock on the door, and relaxed when he heard Ernie's voice. He gently nudged Justin aside and opened the door. "Hey," he said quietly to Ernie. "I think he's all right now, but I think we should probably go soon. Might take him to go see Seamus, sooner rather than later."

He looked over Ernie's shoulder towards the rest of the rooms. "Is Smith still here?" Dean's eyes narrowed a bit at the question.

"He should have left by now," Ernie said trying to sound somewhat neutral about what has just happened. "Unless he has remained to say his farewells to Michael and Jasper."

"If you want, you should be able to apparate from here," he suggested. "And I'll relay to the rest of the folks that you've taken leave. It may be a bit quicker to leave like that." And besides that, Ernie didn't quite want Justin to see Zacharias' parting gesture.

	Dane clapped a hand on Ernie's shoulder. "Thanks mate. We'll leave from here straightaway then." Dean waited until Justin was ready, getting out his wand to Apparate them. He was still angry at Zacharias and he wanted to make sure the night ended on a positive note. "Right, let's go." (Reply to this) (Parent)
