Who: Hermione and Rosalind Bungs
What: Trying to make some sense of last night
When: mid-morning October 30, 2003
Where: Diagon Alley branch library

Hermione had finally gotten in touch with her parents. They had experienced a normal day and assured her that if they caught anything out of the normal they would contact her immediately. It made her feel a little better to know that for now they were alright. That didn't mean things would stay copacetic in their corner of the world.

After conversing with Harry Hermione sat down and jotted down notes from her own memory before perusing the journals. Several others had experienced terrors last evening. Some were awoken from their sleep, while others it seemed had seen things while still completely conscious. Since the majority seemed to have been incidents that stirred the individuals out of their bed in such a way that prevented a return to slumber Hermione decided to focus her attention on the nightmares.

Now she sat at a table in the library. The book Nightmares,Bad Dreams, or Recurring Dreams was sprawled out before her while she scribbled notes and compared what she'd seen in the journals to the information in what was likely to be the first of many texts she would read in the next few hours.

Rosalind's night had been as bad as everyone else's seemed to be. She couldn't remember much about the actual substance of her nightmares, but she could still feel what she'd felt. Enclosed, trapped, a cloying oppressiveness that she couldn't get away from no matter how she tried.

She'd gotten to the office to find her assistant fumbling with folders and dropping them, a definite change from her usual competent manner. As there were no intake interviews, she let the poor girl home, and had decided to look into it a little more herself.

After all, it was rather strange that so many people had strange experiences.

Upon her arrival at the library, she spelled her wand to point her toward the book that would help her the most, only to find it already in the hands of someone else. She didn't recognize the young lady, but she seemed to be quite intent on her work. And Ros admitted more than a little adorable.

"Excuse me," she said, tucking her purse under her arm. "I don't mean to bother, or to rush you, but I was wondering when you'd be done with that." She shrugged and lifted her wand. "I'm told by my friend here that that's the book that will help me the most."

Hermione's dream had begun normal enough. She was poring over a new case load when her boss had suddenly come in demanding that she stop and look over a new case file. He'd lectured her about the recklessness that had led her to miss several minor details that were causing them to have to revisit a case that had previously been deemed close. When she'd opened the new file it was full of picture after picture of her murdered parents.

As she researched, Hermione could only reference her own dream. She sighed as she jotted down the things that she thought were of some merit. She scribbled down the following words from the text: When these types of dream are connected with deep traumatic waking events, such as abuse, war, death, etc. the evolution of the dream into a more positive form may understandably take longer and require more waking attention and focus. She paused and looked them over. Truth be told just about everyone she knew fit this explanation. According to this each of them needed to continue to revisit the contents of these dreams until they were able to understand the meaning behind them. Hermione knew in her gut that she was not looking for a meaning, she needed to find a cause.

She was in the middle of reading the next page when a voice interrupted the flow of words in her mind. "I have a few more chapters," she turned to the front and scanned the page for the titles of the last two chapters. They were things she really needed to look over but she wasn't sure if she wanted this person lingering about waiting for the text.

Then a brilliant idea hit her, why not interview this lady about her night. Of course, it was highly unlikely that she would open up about her terror to a stranger, but it was always worth a try. Of course, Hermione wasn't in the habit of sharing her research with just anyone so she had to carefully determine how to word her inquiry. "Dream interpretation seems to be on the mind of quite a few people today," she began, her hand resting on another book that she'd yet to begin. "Any interest in particular today?"

"You mean, besides everybody having strange nightmares and visions last night?" Didn't the girl know that was what everyone was talking about? "I'm in no rush, but I wanted to look up some of what I felt last night."

She tilted her head, glancing at the other book she had rested her hand on.

"I could probably do with a little of that myself - I sure don't want to dream it again, that's for sure."

Of course Hermione knew that several people, if not everyone, had experienced some horrible dreams. She just wasn't in the habit of stating the obvious to people. For all she knew, the other woman could want to find a way to ensure the dreams continued. It wouldn't be the first time that Hermione had met up with someone seeming innocent enough only to learn that they were part of some overarching sinister plot.

Hermione noticed the woman looking at the book she was planning on delving into next. She did not take kindly to the idea of sharing the books she had painstakingly chosen from the shelves. Especially when the other woman had used a spell rather than her own abilities to discern where she should look for answers.

The woman had mentioned, at least in part, that she had indeed dreamt something unpleasant the night before. She wondered if everyone's dreams were specific or more general. The book she was currently working through had mentioned a bit of both. "Something specific or more generic?"

"A little more generic in my case," she said with a nod. "No actual images remain, but the feelings... I can still feel them now."

She pulled out a seat across from the girl and sat down. She'd always loved chatting up new people. "My names Rosalind, but you can call me Ros. And I'll tell you mine if you tell me yours, deal?"

Hermione gave a nod. She knew there were images of her parents' death in the folder she'd looked over, but she couldn't remember any specifics image wise. It was the dread, that specific feeling, that somehow, someone had gotten to them that had been foremost in her mind.

"The emotion lasts long after the images have faded," she gave a knowing nod as she added a quick note to look up the differences between images and emotions. "Granger," she spoke as she wrote, "Hermione Granger."

"Ah," she said with a nod. Of course Ros had heard the name before, most had, but now she had a face to put to the name. "Well, it's nice to meet you, Hermione."

She took a quick look around, ensuring that none of her clients were nearby. If word got around that she was seen socializing with a muggle-born, it wouldn't do well for her reputation. Then again, business hadn't been as good as it used to be. So many children being forced into meeting matches against their wishes. She'd much rather deal with people genuinely wishing to meet a life mate. Perhaps it was time to drop the blood purity angle... though it had worked so well for business in the past.

Different times and all that.

"So, what did you feel or see?"

"Same here," she gave a generic response to what was likely nothing more than a generic meeting. Hermione remained quiet for a few as did the other woman. She pondered whether to stay once she had finished reviewing the current text or simply check the other book out and head home. She decided that this topic was likely one she and Harry would discuss at dinner this evening and such discussions always went better when she had a book to show to Harry.

Hermione was a bit taken aback by the question. Only Ron and Harry knew her parents were still alive and that they were safely tucked away in Australia. It couldn't hurt to share the generic feeling. "Dread," she said the word in a tone that conveyed how truly dreadful she had felt. "And what about your feelings?" Hermione inquired noting that the other woman was asking for details that had been avoided as part of Hermione's questioning.

Ros nodded sympathetically. "Mine was oppression, being trapped by something, or someone." She shook her head as if shaking away the remaining sensations. That was why she'd asked Hermione for hers - it was better than remembering her own.

"Normally I'd try to ignore it as a simple bad dream, but dreams have been omens at times. I've at times used clients' dreams to help them in my work." She tilted her head and smiled, pushing the negative thoughts of dreams and all to the side. "I'm a matchmaker. A life's path can often be divined in dreams. Runes and tea leaves too, but strangely dreams are more reliable, I find."

Hermione knew what it was like to be trapped. Even though Harry, Ron and she were able to move around in the year leading up to the war they had still been trapped. Trapped at Grimmauld, trapped within the confines of the protection spells around the tent, trapped at Shell Cottage, just trapped.

She fought the urge to roll her eyes when the woman mentioned her line of work. Hermione didn't lay stock in matchmaking. Of course, she hadn't spoken to Ron in forever. They were... she didn't know what they were. She didn't even know what they were anymore. Not that she had time right now to worry about a relationship. Her work kept her quite busy. "That's nice," she forced herself to be polite on the issue.

Ros couldn't help but notice the tone of voice in Hermione's answer. It was that sort of forced politeness that she heard all too often from those doubting those capable of some sort of far-seeing ability. Not that Ros had much of that, but she did what she could, and respected those who did better.

"I know Trelawney's done a job on the reputation of Divinations, but you can't be that ignorant of it, if only in how it reveals the mind of the speaker. You may ask someone a question, but the question speaks more about you than any answer they may give."

She stood up from the seat and held her purse before her. "You know, I don't think I need the books any longer. I've just answered my own question. The dreams don't matter - it's my reaction to them that does. You either control it, or let it control you."

Obviously the woman didn't have as much of a clue as she thought she did. Hermione's forced politeness had nothing to do with Divination and everything to do with her occupation. While she didn't care to practice the subject, she knew there were times when Divination could be valid.

Were she not already miffed that her research had been interrupted, Hermione might have told the woman just how wrong she was. Instead, she simply nodded then returned to her work.
