Characters: Justin Finch-Fletchley and Ernie Macmillan
Setting: Justin's place, November 4, 14:09
Summary: Friends meeting up for a bit of an update.
Rating: Work-safe.

Ernie left work not a minute late and had soon enough found himself at Justin's place. He hadn't had proper sleep for the past few days and it was starting to take a toll on him at work. He was so distracted that he had gotten kicked during a relatively simple training exercise earlier that day from a relatively green colleague. He had spent most of the rest of the day filling out the incident report and just feeling sheepish for having allowed something like that to happen. He of course had been keeping an ear out for their most troubling cases but has as a result felt uncomfortable about what he had learnt. It was clearly a coincidence though, he thought as there were a number of folks still alive who had experienced nightmares. He was worried, but he wasn't exactly sure whether or how much he'd tell Justin about it as he figured that it would cause unnecessary worry.

Stepping out of the fireplace at Justin's he commenced dusting off his uniform.

Justin's day had been bittersweet, the pleasures of the flesh tinged with the bitter note of worry. He couldn't deny it had been what he'd needed, though, and thus hadn't even bothered to fully dress afterward. He'd relaxed in his outer room, where his tv, floo, and couches were, wearing silk boxers and a matching robe.

All in all, it wasn't anything that would be unusual to those who knew him well, and whom he'd given access to his floo - a list that was very small indeed.

He looked up from an old episode of Monty Python to see Ernie stepping out of said floo, and grinned as he watched his mate dust himself off.

"You came in just in time - I think the Dead Parrot Sketch is next!"

"It is?" Ernie asked, feeling at least somewhat distracted and disoriented before he realized what Justin was referring to. "Oh it is," he said, his eyes moving towards the TV as he had now heard the familiar voices of Monte Python.

"How are you?" Well it was good that Justin was watching TV, and something humorous, at that.

Justin stretched out his legs on the coffee table and folded his hands behind his head, looking back at Ernie over his shoulder and grinning from ear to ear.

"Well-shagged, thank you for asking," he replied boastfully. "Which is also the reason why I asked you over, since those stupid journals aren't working right."

He released one hand to pat the couch next to him. "You still have that spot you showed me, right? What did St. Mungo's say about it?"

"Yeah? Well I'm glad to hear then," Ernie said with a grin and a raised eyebrow.

"Well yes, but I'm not going to show you again since it's the same as it was the other day." He tried reassuring himself that it was nothing. He wasn't really convinced of that now...now that he had heard a few things from work. "It was inconclusive thus far--they don't quite know right now, but they are investigating."

"So I take it that you saw a spot on the someone that you were shagging?" He asked, trying to piece together what was going on.

Justin nodded, his grin dimming significantly. "It was right in the middle of his chest. I mentioned I had a friend who had one, who'd been having nightmares - he said he'd been having them too."

He looked down, feeling guilty that he hadn't taken Ernie's revelation as seriously as he should have - but then, he'd been in serious denial that there could be anything wrong with his best mate.

"I asked him if I could tell you who he was in case he needed to talk. He said he'd deal with it on his own, but he did say I could tell you." He paused, swallowing hard before speaking the name. "Theodore Nott. Slytherin, our year."

"Oh--him," Ernie said, remembering well enough that the person Justin was Head Boy that last year but not knowing that much about him. He had only dealt with him as much as he needed to as he wasn't typically fond of those from Slytherin. There was often too much of a personality difference, after all. He did remember the person as rather reserved but was in many of his NEWT-level classes. "Never would've thought he's the sort who would shag anyone at all. Isn't he a bit odd?" Well maybe the man changed over the past five years.

"But in any case, I don't think I know of any pattern as far as this goes." He did think of the patterns of the two most recent homicides, but that sort of pattern wasn't the best to be speaking of right now. "I'll let the appropriate people know, as needed."

"Ern, what have I taught you? Everybody shags. He's not odd, at least I didn't think so. Not that I usually plan on doing much talking, you konw?" He playfully jabbed Ernie in the ribs.

"Appropriate people. What the bloody hell, Ernie... you and this bloke are both having strange dreams, and both have spots on your body that look damn alike. That doesn't worry you in the slightest? Because it's worrying me, mate. I don't know if it's related to anything or what, but it's related to each other - you and him. Somehow. What if everyone else who's having regular nightmares has these spots too? That's not enough to freak you out?"

"I guess I did get a bit jealous that he had been Head Boy that year. Although I don't think it would've been a pleasant job by any stretch of the imagination with the Carrows running Hogwarts. But then again, considering what his sort are--I wouldn't have been surprised if he was complicit with what happened." Ern stopped himself before his mind wandered further down that dark path that it typically went when he thought about that year.

It was suddenly drawn back when he thought of Justin's questions. "Well I am a bit concerned," he said quickly, in a far too reserved and guarded manner to be convincing. "It is odd--that is," he added as if to try to explain his concern with the most washed out and generic thoughts.

Justin was aghast. He looked at his best mate with a raised eyebrow and a look. "Okay, you were in school with Snape as Headmaster, your best mate was on the run from Snatchers, Harry and the others were off trying to vanquish You-Know-Who... and you were jealous because you weren't Head Boy?" He shook his head. "The things I learn about you, Ern."

He shoved his shoulder into Ernie's to let him know he was taking the piss, at least a little.

"It's more than odd. If it were me, I'd be running by now."

"Well yes--I haven't advertised that I was perfect. And that was the beginning of the year. In any case, it may have made it at least somewhat easier to get around some of the rules without having to worry about someone else monitoring us." He knew that Justin was joking, but felt the need to explain. "In any case, they probably already knew what I was to start." He had made his views clear rather early on, after all.

Ernie looked at Justin for a moment, looking conflicted before saying it. "The news is going through the department like wildfire, so you may as well know. Try not to worry or blow this terribly out of proportion." He spoke feeling very reluctant to speak of what he did know. "The most recent homicides--Harry's and Mr. Smith's--what they do have in common is that people who know them have reported that they have the dreams and spots in common. It could be coincidence though."

Justin jumped at the announcement, and couldn't help himself from rising to his feet and beginning to pace nervously.

"Bloody hell, Ern! Coincidence my arse! No, this isn't happening, it isn't," he muttered as his arms wrapped around his torso. He suddenly felt very sick, as if the world had suddenly been thrown off-kilter.

No, not Ernie! He's going to die, like the rest of them! But the idiot won't see it! No, I'm not going to let it happen.

With a speed he didn't know he possessed, he whipped out his wand, aimed it at Ernie, and shouted out an Incarcerous.

Ernie watched Justin for a moment feeling as though he's made a mistake when his friend started pacing. It was a bit much, he thought as he looked at the floor. "I'm sorry to worry you Justin," he was about to say, more to the floor than to anything else when he heard Justin shout.

His eyes darted up towards Justin but he was too late, he stumbled backwards, tripped over his own feet, and was caught up and bound in the ropes. "Bloody hell, Justin! You're joking are you?"

"Don't worry, Ernie," he said as he nervously tapped the tip of his wand against his thigh. "I just need a few moments to figure out the logistics here. I know Mags will bring whatever you need to eat, but it'll be hard to explain to her why I've got you tied up here."

He shook his head. "You know, I always knew there'd come a day when I'd have to repay the favour. You hid me, Ern - I'm hiding you. Nobody will come get you as long as you're here."

"Merlin--Justin--We're not even really sure whether there's a link. And they'll wonder where the bloody hell I've gone if I don't show up to work." Ernie tried to stay as calm as he could to try to coax Justin out of his madness.

"I appreciate the thought--I really do appreciate the thought, but I should be fine. I think you just need to calm down and we can think of some more productive ways of dealing with this."

"Fuck them," he answered, not giving a damn about the DMLE, or the Ministry, or anything but his best mate. "Harry was an Auror, and look what happened to him? I'm not letting it happen to you."

The reality of it all was hitting so hard that it stung Justin's eyes with tears. "I'm not losing you Ern, you hear that? I lost my Dad, and that's more than enough for me, thank you very much."

He sat down next to where Ernie lay tied up, and rested a hand on his mate's knee. "Remember how bad you felt when Professor Sprout made me go back to classes, and then I got caught by the basilisk?"

Ernie struggled against the ropes, feeling them dig into him, they were not giving way. Not on their own at least. He slowly moved his hands toward the holster where he kept his wand.

"But this is different, Justin. It's not the Death Eaters, and You-Know-Who is gone, and it's not some basilisk. I did feel that I failed you--I was so worried. We were very lucky that you were alright." He kept his eyes on Justin, feeling whatever hostility related to being caught and bound like this dissipated.

"And I'm not going to die if I could help it either, you know. I understand that your father's loss has hurt. But doing this may not prevent it from happening anyways. I'm sorry but really, we don't know what we're dealing with to begin with."

"That's what scares me, Ern. I don't know anything, and you don't sound like you're taking the connections seriously." He looked at his friend pleadingly. "I'm scared you're going to miss something because of it, and because of that you'll be gone."

He bent forward until his forehead was pressed against Ernie's thigh. His wand dropped forgotten from his fingers as he curled up into a ball.

"If I didn't try to save you, and you died... I'd never forgive myself."

Ernie was finally able to draw his wand from his holster and made the ropes disappear with an unspoken spell. He drew his legs under his thighs and pushed his torso up so that he was seated, still with Justin's forehead on his thigh. He picked up Justin's wand and laid it a bit further from his friend. In case he had ideas once more.

"Well you can always just tell yourself that you've tried your best but I'm too bloody stubborn and selfish to be saved. It's not only you that has a say in whether things work out or not." He tried to pat the back and top of Justin's head comfortingly. If possible, really. "But I'll admit that after I heard the news I was very concerned. I just didn't want you to worry too much though. I was wrong in minimizing it in the hopes that you wouldn't worry too."

Justin only barely noticed the hand upon his head. "What the hell am I thinking, anyway. I can barely protect myself, how can I protect you?"

He lifted his head and uncurled himself a little, then his face was overcome with an almost comic pout of confusion.

"Hey, you got out! Bloody fucking stupid rope," he muttered, opting to blame the rope rather than his skills at offensive and defensive spells.

"You know, I'm not overly bad at what I do. You did manage to catch me off guard though." Ernie knew that he just needed a moment like that to be snuffed out, but he wasn't going to speak of that.

"In any case, you have faster reflexes than you give yourself credit. I wouldn't mind reviewing defensive and offensive spells with you though; it'd give me at least a bit of peace of mind should anything happen. So long as you don't use them on me."

"What'll that do, Ern?" he replied with a rare look of hopelessness. His imagination was running wild, coming up with wild theories that all led to Ernie being dead, just like Harry. "Spells only count when you're still there to cast them. We both know that at the first sign of trouble, I'm out the door."

He picked a piece of lint from his trousers, not liking what this whole... thing was doing to him. He hated feeling worried sick, feeling like there wasn't anything he could do for himself or for everyone else. This wasn't like him - at least it wasn't like the him he tried to be.

But then, that him tended to push down his more negative emotions. They had to come out sometime.

"I just... I'm sorry, Ern, but I'm not sorry at all. If I could hold you anyplace, I would, just in case."

"Well you'd feel at least somewhat more comfortable with using those spells," Ernie started. "And you know, you never know what you do have in you unless you're in a situation. Which is why practicing is typically a good idea. In any case, I believe that you'd do what is right for yourself then, should anything happen," he said, trying his best to be comforting but knowing that he is babbling again.

"And thanks," Ernie said with a smile...it was hard to smile while engaged in such a grim discussion, but it was also difficult to not smile when someone is showing genuine concern. "Again, I'm too stubborn to be hidden or held away. Don't ever hold that against yourself either. Then again, if the situation was reversed, I'd probably do the same."

There was a slight crack to Justin's grim exterior. "Well, the situation was reversed, and you did do the same." A small smile. "That didn't work then either, as you said."

He sighed and ran his hands along his face, as if wiping away his feelings of the last several moments. "Maybe I should take you up on that offer, of practicing. I guess it couldn't hurt."

An idea popped into his head and his face lit up. "Hey, Ern, think we might be able to use the DMLE gym? I bet there're a few fit officers that might like to help."

"Well it can't hurt too much," Ernie said, rubbing his ribcage. "A rookie managed to kick me today while in training," he added with a sigh and a shrug. "Could be worse though."

"How about if I check? I'll have to warn you that those blokes are merciless though. They knew that I was having an off day. But I guess it was to make up for calling a number of them in to cover Halloween," he said shaking his head.

"Well, you know me Ern - I don't mind it rough!"

He clapped his hand onto Ernie's shoulder, then used it as leverage to lift himself into a standing position.

"Come on, Mags should be here soon with dinner. I asked her to make your favourite," he offered, holding out his hand to his best mate.

For a moment Ernie didn't quite catch what Justin had said. "I didn't mean it like that," he said with a grin, grabbing hold of Justin's hand.

He was relieved to note that his best friend had returned to normal and that he wasn't going to spend goodness knows how long tied up and hidden away.
