Old Haunts
Characters: Bianca Dunstan and Jasper Dorny
Setting: Hanging around Hogwarts after the funeral service before the game
Summary: Bianca loses herself in the familiarity of Hogwarts and runs into Jasper
Rating: Probably work safe

Bianca's recent vision was weighting heavily on her mind. She'd managed to put it out of her mind enough to get dressed in somber grey and attend the funeral service at Hogwarts. Her mind drifted frequently though, and when the service was over, she hung back and finally melted away into the crowd.

She found herself inside Hogwarts, her fingers trailing along rebuilt walls as she went. There was both solace and bad memories there, but nothing rem indeed her of her vision. That was a blessing. She had her camera in her bag, as usual, and she took it out, knowing that she could look at things through the lens with so much more ease than with her naked eye. She clicked away at the castle that had once been her second home, not realising that she wasn't alone in escaping the crowds.

Jasper hated funerals. Well, pretty much everyone hated funerals, but considering the first funeral he ever attended was for his parents and the second was for his childhood hero, Jasper felt he might have a particular unease when it came to them. As much as he idolized Harry, Jasper had sat through the service with one foot out the door already. He hadn't even bothered to take off his coat.

It was a relief when it was finally over, and he filed out with the crowd. But instead of making his way back to his empty house in London, Jasper lingered in the new old halls of Hogwarts. Everything looked the same, even though he knew almost everything was new. It was strangely comforting as he wandered aimlessly through the school, getting lost in memories.

It was all too easy to get lost in memories. Bianca very careful let her memories take her back to fifth year and earlier, trying not to focus on the year she hid at home or the year she came back to find Hogwarts destroyed and being rebuilt around her.

She paused under a grand archway that she remembered looking exactly the same as it did now, even though during the war it had been nothing but rubble. She clicked her camera and rounded a corner, still peering through her lens. Her lens found Jasper before she did and she stood stock still for a moment before lowering the camera.

"J-Jasper," she greeted him quietly. "Um...hello," she added, not quite sure what to say.

Jasper had been gazing out of a window that overlooked one of the courtyards when he heard his name. He didn't jump, but only because the voice was so quiet - and familiar, he realized, a moment later. Looking about, he spotted Bianca a little ways down the hall, camera in hand. "Oh. Hello, Bianca," he greeted her with an uncertain smile. "Taking pictures?"

Bianca lowered her camera, her cheeks a bit pink. "Oh, um, yes. It just...despite it being comparatively new construction new, it still feels so old and familiar. I suppose I wanted to take that feeling home with me." She fiddled with the camera in her hands and looked up at Jasper. "What about you? Just remembering old times?" Was that presumptuous? She had no idea if he had any specific purpose and it wasn't really any of her business to ask. She bit her lip, unable to take back the question now.

Jasper nodded as Bianca spoke. "I know what you mean," he admitted quietly, gaze drawn back to the still courtyard below. "I feel the same way. I know it's a different building, but it still seems like the same old Hogwarts. I imagine it was done on purpose. Tradition or nostalgia, or both." He shrugged, not really sure or minding which it was.

Bianca's question had him glancing at her again, his small smile a little wistful. "Remembering old times? I guess you could say so. Not so much specific memories as the feel of the place, though. If that makes any sense."

"I think they did," she agreed. "Do it on purpose, I mean. They probably wanted everyone to feel as safe and as much at home as they had before the war, and what batter way than to rebuild the way it had been." She looked up at Jasper, surprised when he put into words exactly how she felt.

"Yes, it makes sense. I'm not remembering specific events, just how I felt when I was here. Hogwarts was my second home. I suppose I miss it." She looked up at an arching buttress and smiled when she caught the edge of a staircase moving.

She hung her camera around her neck, done with taking picture for the moment, but that left her hands free, so she automatically began playing with her fingers, twisting them as she spoke. "I had my very first real vision here. Well, not right here, it was in the Hufflepuff common room, but here at Hogwarts, I mean."

Bianca said everything that Jasper was thinking and he looked at her, brows raised. "You really do understand," Jasper said, a little awed that someone got it without him having to explain. "I miss it too." Though he knew he probably missed being at Hogwarts for the wrong reasons.

Following Bianca's gaze, he watch the moving staircase but didn't look back at her until she spoke again. "that's right. you mentioned having visions. That's got to be...interesting." Interesting wasn't quite the word, he thought, but it would probably work best if he didn't want to presume.

Bianca went a little pink at that, and she shifted her gaze back to Jasper for a moment. "I'm glad you feel the same way," she said shyly. She hesitated for a moment and then answered him, "Sometimes it's all right. The visions I mean. Sometimes they're small and silly. Sometimes they spoil surprises. But then there are the times when they're warnings, and in those cases, I don't often know until it's too late. I just..."

She swallowed and almost stopped speaking. But she needed to tell someone, and Jasper understood some things about her; maybe she could tell him this. "I had another vision this morning. It wasn't one of the good ones."

Jasper could see the change come over Bianca and he wished he could have done something to bring that smile back to her face. "You mentioned before." His voice was quiet as he took a hesitant step closer. "About your visions not being...the good sometimes." He paused, tugging absently at a button on his coat before offering, "...do you want to talk about it?" He almost say nevermind, that is was none of his business, but whatever Bianca had seen had obviously bothered her and it might help to tell someone.

She bit her lip and was silent for a long moment before answering. "Yes. I think I need to tell someone about it. You...you wouldn't mind?" He'd offered of course, but still. "Could we maybe go someplace a bit less public?" There were plenty of places, nooks and corners and rooms off or other rooms they could just steal away so they weren't right out there for everyone to stumble across.

Bianca selected a direction and found an empty room with some comfy chairs, a long table, and rows of bookshelves. It would do. It felt comfortable and she needed that.

"N-no, I wouldn't mind, " Jasper stammered out, pushing his glasses up out of habit. Bianca's suggestion of finding somewhere more private had Jasper's ears going pink for some reason, but he followed her lead without comment, trailing after her until she found somewhere they might be comfortable.

He didn't remember this room from his Hogwarts days, but it might just be a new addition Jasper thought as he took a seat in one of the padded chairs. He allowed himself a moment's curiosity to look around before focusing on Bianca and waiting for her to speak.

Now that they were settled and comfortable, Bianca felt a bit nervous. She looked down at her hands, twisting her fingers as she spoke. "It was late this morning. I was making lunch, in the kitchen, and things started to get a bit cloudy. I recognise the signs now, so I knew what was coming. The entire kitchen vanished, and was replaced by a woman with this deep red hair, like...like flames and blood together. I'd seen her face before, in another vision. In that one, she'd been an old woman, growing younger as she walked toward me, becoming the younger version I saw this morning. But this time, she looked at Bianca with these terrible eyes. Her mouth was moving, but I couldn't hear anything."

Bianca went red around the ears and looked away from her hands, darted a glance up at Jasper and looked right back down. "Then she kissed me. But it was a cold, horrid thing, like she was trying to take over, not actually...give any kind of pleasure." Merlin, this hadn't seemed so embarrassing before she started to tell Jasper. "It was like she had a motive that had nothing to do with kissing. Or well anything else like that. it left me feeling terrified."

She exhaled and managed to look up then. "The vision ended then. I don't know who the woman is, Jasper, but I'm so very scared of her. She's...evil. I can feel it."

It was an odd thing, listening to Bianca describe her visions. It was strange what she described, but also fascinating. Jasper had always been partial to good stories, and this definitely held his interest. Though, not for the obvious reasons. His ears turned bright pink when Bianca spoke of the kiss, but he willed himself to pay attention to the rest of what she said instead of lingering on how soft and full Bianca's lips looked.

Especially since Bianca was so obviously frightened. Without thinking, Jasper reached out and took her hands in his own. "If you feel she's evil, then she must be. I'm sorry you were alone when...well, I'm sure it must have been disturbing." He hesitated before asking, "You're sure you have no idea who this woman could possibly be?"

It was strange. Bianca hadn't realised how much she actually wanted some kind of physical comfort until Jasper took her hands. She actually felt a small rush of relief at the touch and at his words. She unconsciously leaned closer as he spoke. "It was. Disturbing I mean. It's...I'm usually alone during my visions, but they haven't been this bothersome, this worrying since..." She swallowed hard. "Since the war."

She shook her head at Jasper's last question. "No, I don't. I've never seen her before. If I saw her face somewhere though, I could recognise it easily. I'm just a bit afraid to go looking." His hands were so warm around hers. She dropped her gaze down to them briefly, then looked back up at him.

For a moment, Jasper lost his train of thought when Bianca leaned closer. How had he not noticed how long her lashes were before? How clear her eyes? No, this was a horrible time for him to think such things and without thinking, he shook his head slightly to clear it.

It took a moment for Bianca's words to register and Jasper's hands tightened around hers briefly. "I'm sorry. I can't imagine how horrible the war must have been for someone with your abilities. And for it to be happening again...Is there nothing that can be done? To help or maybe suppress at least the worst of them? Or maybe..." Jasper wasn't sure he was in an position to be making suggestions, but he pressed on. "Maybe you should go to the Ministry with what you've seen. It could be important." He wasn't even sure the Ministry would take her seriously, but it was something.

Jasper caught the direction of Bianca's gaze then and an embarrassed flush swept up his face. "I'm sorry," he mumbled, pulling his hands away. "I didn't mean to be so rude." His fingers curled in on themselves, feeling curiously empty.

Bianca bit her lip. "I'd actually liked my abilities until the war. It wasn't easy knowing that every vision could be something terrible. But I got through it, and my visions turned mostly pleasant again. Until recently."

She tilted her head, considering. "There are some herbs I know of that suppress it,but...what if I suppress something I ought to have seen? I don't know if I should. You really think I should talk to someone at the ministry? I mean, they've listened to prophecies in the past, in the Department of Mysteries. I just don't know if my visions are, well, important enough to be heard."

Jasper suddenly removed his hands from hers and Bianca actually found herself reaching for them again before she caught herself, flushed and looked away. Her hands felt cold now and she wrapped one in the other for some sort of comfort. "N-no," she forced herself to say. "It wasn't rude. Not at all. It was...comforting." She stole a glance back up at him.

Jasper thought about what Bianca said for a long moment, trying to think of what he could possible say. "Well," he said slowly, finally. "If you're not willing to take the chance of missing something important, then I think that proves you should go to the Ministry. No matter how small the detail, I'm sure they'd want any help they could get." He shrugged a shoulder. "They said so in the Prophet, didn't they?" He was fairly certain he'd seen some call for information about the recent events in the paper.

Jasper blinked at Bianca. He hadn't been expecting that, not at all, but it warmed him and made his ears go bright pink again. Slowly, he reached for her hand again and wrapped it in his own. "If...Well. I'm glad I could help in some way."

Bianca bit her lip and then nodded. Jasper was right. If she didn't want to banish her visions, that meant she thought there could be some importance. And if there was some importance, then the ministry should know. And the prophet had asked for help. It would be a bit scary to go, but it might turn out, well, important. "All right. I'll go," she said quietly.

he reached for her hand again and Bianca looked back up in him, her own hand very gently squeezing his as they touched. She flushed, the tips of her ears hot and her cheeks very very pink. "Th-thank you. I mean, for listening and for- well. Yes, you've helped. Definitely."

Seeing Bianca so uncertain, Jasper felt a little guilty. Maybe he shouldn't have pressed her. It wasn't his place to force her to do something she was uncomfortable with. But she'd agreed to go to the Ministry now and Jasper really believed that it was the right thing to do.

It was worth it for that light squeeze and very pretty blush, and Jasper gave her a small smile. "It was the least I could do. Us Hufflepuffs stick together, right?"

Bianca had to smile in return. She couldn't help it; Jasper's small smiles were sweet and made her want to smile in response. "We do. Thank you Jasper." Despite the sadness that had brought them here, she was actually feeling a bit better now. She wondered just how much of that was due to Jasper. It was nice to have the comfort of the familiar around and Bianca was in no hurry to leave just yet.
