Characters: Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger
Setting: Hermione Granger's flat, a little after 4 am on 1 November, 2003
Summary: Ron goes to break the news about Harry's death to Hermione.
Rating: Safe for work

Ron felt numb from it all: he had already been tired from working the Gala, staying at the Ministry until the wee hours of the morning had pushed him well over into exhaustion, and the reason for it had him in what he distantly realized was probably a state of shock. He could hardly think but, at the same time, he felt just then as if he would never be able to sleep until they knew what happened and justice had been served.

Apparating was probably foolish, under the circumstances, but he didn't feel like flooing in so late (or was it early?) and so he'd appeared outside Hermione's door with a pop once he'd been able to leave.

He needed to see her almost more than he needed to tell her what had happened.

Taking a deep breath, Ron knocked loudly on the door.

Hermione had gone to the gala just to appease her own curiosity. When nothing of consequence had occurred by 10:30 that night she had gotten her wand and headed home. After looking over her notes from her meeting with Harry she had turned in for the night and was sleeping soundly when a loud knock rang out from the door.

She rolled over and looked at the clock on her wall. It was four o'clock in the morning. As she grabbed her robe and threw it around her body all she could think was that someone better be dead or else whomever was on the other side of that door was likely to be killed. Wand in hand, Hermione looked out of the peephole on the door and immediately noted that Ron was on the other side.

"Ronald Weasley," she hollered indignantly at him as she pulled the door open then immediately froze when she saw a look of complete dread on his face. "What happened?" she lowered her voice now feeling bad about the thought that had run through her head as she'd made her way to the door. The only other time she'd seen that look had been when Fred died.

Ron looked up as Hermione opened the door. He wasn't really surprised at her indignant tone, considering the hour, but the way her voice lowered after was unexpected. Was it really so obvious that something was wrong? Maybe it was just the fact that he'd shown up at such a horrible hour or maybe it was written on his face; Ron found he couldn't make himself smile for her, though. It was all too awful and he hated the thought of having to be the one to tell her, to make her feel what he felt. This wasn't how he'd thought seeing her again would go.

"Hermione," he said softly, meeting her eyes, "can I come in?"

Hermione stepped aside. "Sure," she replied as she watched Ron enter. She had intended to try and speak with him last evening, but every time she'd laid eyes on him he had been engaged in some work worthy activity. Therefore, the fact that they hadn't spoken in weeks added to the shock that Ron would arrive at her home at this hour of the morning. Whatever was going on the state he was in was not a good one and she wasn't about to turn him out into the dark. She closed the door behind him and reset the protective charms that had become second nature since the end of the war.

Hermione followed Ron's directive that she have a seat. When he spoke the words that Harry was dead she called him a liar and a few other choice words. Surely this was just a ploy, something to do with his investigation. Harry couldn't be dead, he wouldn't leave them like that. Someone had used polyjuice potion and it simply just hadn't worn off. Besides, Harry had survived the killing curse twice before.

Ron let her rant before giving her a few more details. There had been blood and the killing curse didn't leave blood. Harry had definitely been murdered and Neville was working the case. It was all he could say because it was all he knew.
