Hello, sunshine.
Who?: Chase, open
What?: Arrival
When?: April 19
Where?: The front of the mansion
Rating?: Light R for swears
Status? Open, in progress

He'd seen it coming - Caleb's attack after the lightning struck. Except, part of him knew that hadn't been lightning. That had been power. More power. Power that he wanted. And because his focus had slipped, and because the other witch had gotten a boost, Chase lost.

He'd been flung backward, into the barn, and ... through the barn. Though as he looked around, he realized that wasn't quite right. For one thing, the sun was out. For another ... well, Putnam's barn had never looked that good.

And ... the rain had stopped.

Chase turned a slow circle. His clothing seemed dry, which was odd because it had been soaked just minutes ago. He brushed his hands down the front of his charcoal grey jacket and matching slacks, the black shirt underneath his jacket rubbing lightly at his skin with the motion. Same clothes, different surroundings.

Was Caleb, with his boosted power, capable of this? What was this, exactly, anyway? He wasn't in Ipswich. He wasn't at Putnam's barn, but that left the question ...

"Where the fuck am I?"

Zack lifted an eyebrow and blinked up at the sky. After a moment, he looked down at his hands and stared, at a loss for why they no longer held the buster sword. The last thing he remembered, he had been about to swing the sword into enemy ranks. He had known he would die, but he had been ready to take everyone else out with him to keep his friend safe.

Now, though... the sword was on his back again, held in place by the strong magnet attached to his SOLDIER-issue harness.

"Weird..." Zack muttered, scratching the back of his head before tilting it to one side. "I don't... remember that fight ending."

More than a little disturbed now, Zack shook his head to clear it of the haziness that had taken over with his confusion. He needed to focus! Nodding to himself, Zack quickly checked himself over, even twisting his head as far as he could to see what he could of his back.

Right. So no bullet wounds that he could see or feel. That was really weird. There had been far too many troops for him to get away without a scratch. Despite what he'd like to believe, Zack really wasn't a good enough fighter to pull that off even with the use of all of his materia. No one could do that.

Zack rubbed the back of his head again, considering the possibilities. One particular unnerving one was that maybe, just maybe, he had never managed to escape Hojo's lab with Cloud. Everything had seemed so real, but who knew what else had seemed real over the past four years. Most of his memories of that time were a blur, which he was glad for. There were things that had happened in that lab that Zack never wanted to think about again.

He sighed with that thought and dug into his pocket until his hand closed around his cell phone. It was sort of pointless if this was a dream, but he could at least try to call someone. He hadn't tried before out of fear that Shin-Ra would be able to pinpoint his location more easily, but did he really have anything to lose now?

Zack flipped the phone open and scrolled through his messages out of habit, ignoring Yuffie's spam as he searched for anything new. Once that was finished, he flipped to the main screen and scrolled through his contacts until Kunsel's name was highlighted. Out of everyone who was still with Shin-Ra, he trusted him the most.

"C'mon, work," Zack muttered, putting the phone to his ear after dialing the number. After only two rings, the phone clicked off. Not dissuaded, Zack punched in Aerith's number next with similar results. Tseng didn't answer, Cloud didn't answer (though Zack hadn't expected him to), and even Sephiroth didn't answer (something Zack was a little relieved about -- he would have freaked out if he heard the other first-class SOLDIER's voice on the other end of the line.

Useless... Zack thought, then turned his attention to the world at large, looking around until he spotted what looked like another man a little ways off.

"Oi!" he tried, starting to walk toward Chase. "You there!"

Chase jerked slightly at the sound of a voice; he'd been a little absorbed in his own thoughts. He turned to face the source of the voice, and he just ... stared.

And then he laughed. It wasn't an "oh, my god, that's so funny" laugh; it was a "you've got to fucking be kidding me" laugh, one that verged on hysteria.

Because this guy couldn't be for real. Who the fuck walked around with a sword on their back?

Once he managed to get his laughter under control, his face sobered immediately, shifting expressions with uncanny speed. His nostrils flared slightly before he spoke. "Is it Halloween, and no one told me?" His voice had an edge of sarcasm, and he shoved his hands into his pockets as he regarded the other male.

Sure, he could've asked something else, anything else, but asking where he was or if this guy knew anything would be admitting a weakness.

And Chase Collins had no weaknesses.

Zack just stared for a moment, one eyebrow lifted in mild surprise until Chase's laughter subsided. And then came the question.

Surprised, Zack lifted one hand to pat the top of his head, then twisted around again to see if he could spot anything unusual at all on his person. He swore to God... if Hojo had mucked around with his genes and given him a tail or something...

There wasn't anything strange, though.

"Ex...cuse me?" Zack folded his arms over his chest, frowning slightly. "What's that supposed to mean?"

"Oh, come on," Chase said, gesturing with one hand to the sword on the guys back. "I mean, what're you supposed to be? Knight of the round table?" Chase was careful to keep his uncertainty and fear buried deep beneath his mask of sarcasm and venom. It was safer that way.

Besides, he had no weaknesses.

"Anyway," he continued, a grin slipping across his lips. "I forgot my costume. Where'd you get yours?"

"Whoa, buddy, this isn't a costume!" Zack waved his hands in front of him before crossing his arms into an x as a great big no. Zack paused a moment before dropping his arms and propping his hands on his hips. "This is a SOLDIER uniform. Not a... what did you call it again?"

Round table? Knight? Zack wasn't sure what that was supposed to mean.

"I'm Zack," he said, trying to get this conversation going in a direction that made more sense. "Who're you supposed to be?"

Soldier uniform? Hardly. Most of the ones he knew wore camos or actual uniforms. That ... well, he wasn't even going to get into what that looked like.

In response to Zack's question, Chase glanced down at himself. He'd been dressed for the Fall Fest (sort of, anyway), and it was nice attire. Still ... "James Bond," he decided, the grin broadening before his eyes flashed, flames bleeding to black as he pulled his hands out of his pockets, the grin fading into a neutral expression. "But you can call me Chase."

What was 'Chase' supposed to be? A middle name? A nick name? Zack shook his head to himself, giving up on puzzling that out. He grinned the next moment. "Chase, then. All right." Zack glanced at the outfit, suddenly not as amused. "You're not with the Turks, are you?"

Zack kept at least a smile in place, but already he was sorting through his options. If this guy was a Turk, it would spell more than a little trouble for Zack if he recognized him.

Because... there was no way Hojo hadn't alerted all of Shin-Ra about the escape, right? The madman was thorough if nothing else.

Dark brows elevated slightly. Turks? "No," he said. But that gave him something else to contemplate, didn't it? Turks and soldiers and big shiny swords - oh my. "Are you?" He asked with a grin. Maybe the guy was a Turk solider, and since Chase wasn't one, he was going to try to kill him now?

Not that it would be much of a fight. A few blasts of power and he could probably pitch him over that cliff - and Chase was primed and ready to go.

"Me?" Zack fought down a snicker (and was mostly successful if you called needing to bite his lip to keep from laughing outright a success). Zack, a Turk? That just wasn't something he got mistaken for every day.

Zack really couldn't picture himself in a suit. The harder he tried, the closer he came to losing his composure and laughing himself silly.

"No," Zack managed at last. "Not last time I checked, anyway." Switching topics, Zack motioned vaguely. "Do you live out here or something?"

"There?" Chase nodded toward the mansion. "Yeah. I own it." His grin widened again before he shrugged. "Nah. I just decided that here seemed like a good place to stop and smell the sea air," he continued. He blinked once and his eyes faded from black to their normal light blue.

He shook his head, his expression shifting to his usual neutral mask - the one he wore when he wasn't trying to get somewhere. "I just ... ended up here," he admitted, shrugging as if to say it was no big deal.

Turning, he studied the formidable front of the mansion before he glanced to Zack. The grin reappeared, the cheesy "let's be friends" one. "Why don't you go knock on the door and say trick or treat?" he challenged him.

"I'd rather if there was a doorbell to ring," Zack retorted, shrugging widely. "I could ring it, and you could run like hell. It'd be even better if the actual owners chased you. Nothing starts the day like a game of tag, right?"

Zack rubbed the back of his head, glancing toward the mansion as he tried to decide what really would be best to do. He'd just ended up here, Chase had just ended up here... maybe someone on the inside would be able to shed a bit of light on the coincidence.

"Or... we could both knock. See if anyone's home." Zack jerked his chin towards the mansion, lifting an eyebrow as he did. "What d'you say?"

Chase smirked, then grinned despite himself. This guy wasn't half-bad. Of course, he might have to kill him later, but he was all right with that. In the meantime, it wouldn't be so bad to hang out with him, and use him.

"All right," he agreed amicably enough before he turned to start toward the mansion. It was something to do, and moderately better than just ... hanging out outside. "So, you said you were knocking, right?" Chase grinned over to Zack.

"And you said you were running to lead the cannibals inside away," Zack agreed, not quite sure where that had come form, but perfectly amicable about going with the joke anyway.

Zack frowned, stepping forward until he was actually close enough to knock if he so chose.

"I'll never get why people build stuff like this in the middle of nowhere," he shared, glancing back at his new acquaintance before lifting his hand to pound on the door. "Ha ha... I bet no one will even hear that." Zack rubbed the back of his neck, then motioned to Chase. "Let's take a vote. If no one answers, should we sneak in and have a look?"

A grin spread across his lips. "No one said anything about cannibals inside. I say we eat them before they eat us." He winked at Zack as he moved to stand beside but slightly behind him. He kept his hands deep in his pockets, adopting his most harmless posture and expression. Nope, no witches here, no sir or ma'am as the case may be.

"I'm fine with sneaking in." Or burning it down. Grinning to his thoughts, Chase pulled one hand out of his pocket, running it down his face to smooth out his expression. "Could be fun," he continued as he slid his hand back into his pocket.

A shift in the air, another two keys on the desk? Acheron regarded them with cool swirling eyes and let out a sigh. More people to explain their current situation to, more questions that he didn’t have the answers to. Acheron didn’t like not knowing things. Actually, it pissed him off slightly.

He sat there at the desk, listening to the distant ringing and just left it at that. He’d tossed his cell phone in the toilet after the first three times it’d went off and flushed it down to…where did it go here anyway? Rolling his eyes at himself he glanced at the door, a small smirk pulling up the corners of his lips as he listened idly to the conversation beyond it.

Interesting things were afoot here. Letting out a sigh he pushed the chair back from the desk and with a few quick strides he made his way to the door. Using his powers he willed the doors to open, a blonde brow raising over the rim of his ever present sunglasses and eyed the two men for a moment.

“No cannibals that I know of unless of course you are referring to vampires…then I make no promises.” Acheron smiled at the two, “Welcome to the mansion boys. No way off or out, no get out of jail free card, nada. We’re all being held here against our wills, so until there is a way out of here there is only but one rule: no killing.” His gaze shifted back and forth between the two for a moment, not that they could probably tell it. He eyed them for a moment once again before he moved back. “Everything you’ll need will be provided.”

He turned his head to look at them, never once turning his back on them. “Any questions?” He asked, raising a brow over the edge of his sunglasses.

Chase grinned. No killing? They'd see about that. And while Chase did have a few questions, the brunt of the ones he'd had had been fairly well answered by the man at the door. They were here, and there was no way out.

That was enough for him; maybe Caleb hadn't had anything to do with this after all. Sure, Caleb had some power, but enough to confine a bunch of strangers somewhere? Unlikely. Even Chase didn't have that power.

Or did he? The witch mused about that for a moment before dismissing it as unimportant in the current situation. "I think you covered all the bases," he said to the man in the door as he studied him openly and curiously. "But I'll guess this isn't your house either, since you mentioned we're all being held here. You know whose it is?"

Because maybe they could use a little killing.

"Hey, I've got another question," Zack said, jerking his chin toward the inside of the mansion. "How d'you know we're stuck here? We could have some sort of amazing teleportation skill that you've never even heard about, and I don't see any chains on us yet."

Zack glanced toward Chase, a grin tugging at his lips as he lifted one eyebrow. "Now would be the time for you to teleport exactly three inches to the left -- just to give my theory that little extra bit it needs to be amazing."

Thinking seriously for a moment, though, Zack wasn't sure what he thought of this mess. He'd like to have a few words with whoever was in charge here...

Well, why the hell not? Chase grinned and phased himself invisible, stepped sideways, and phased back into sight. "Good enough?" he asked Zack, the grin widening before he stepped back beside the other male.

He tilted his head a little to peer past Ash into the house, wondering what that was all about, and deciding they were about to find out - if he could quit screwing around.

But screwing around was fun.

He did have to wonder if they were honestly trapped here, and he decided that as soon as he had a moment alone, he'd investigate that.

Acheron shook his head, “It belongs to many and yet to none. It lives in its own way.” He lifted a shoulder, “There are three of us who have taken it upon ourselves to be in charge of the place. We were the first three called here. Which would be myself, Legolas, and Kakashi.” He raised a brow at Zack, snorting softly.

“There isn’t much that I haven’t heard about.” He watched, unimpressed at Chase’s antics and gave an evil chuckle. “Please, going invisible? My godchild can do that and she’s only five.” He would have to keep an eye on this guy, he could already feel it and a talk with Legolas was in order soon. Very soon.

Ash let out a sigh, “We are trapped here. By the will of the gods and goddesses who wish to play house. I suggest, if you do not believe me, to go to the library and do a bit of reading up on them.” He shrugged his broad shoulders and jerked his head to the side. “Come on in, nothing in here will bite…hard anyway. Just stay away from the squirrel’s cookies and Gollum’s fishes and you won’t have any issues.”

He waited for a moment, brows raised and watched them once again. “I meant the no killing rule. You seriously do not want to hurt anyone within these walls because it will not only be my wrath brought down on you.” He cut his eyes to Chase with a small smirk. “Oh, by the way I am Acheron Parthenopaeus, Ash for short. Once again, welcome to the mansion Chase and Zack.”

Chase's lips twisted into a grimace of distaste for most of the speech. Reading? No thanks. Fishes? Not interested. Though the name Gollum struck a chord in him, or rang a bell, or whatever the phrase du jour was - though he couldn't immediately place the name.

Still, it was an invitation inside, and inside had to be better than outside, so Chase crossed the threshold into the mansion. He shifted slightly sideways to watch Ash as he passed him, a grin curving his lips. "What if I don't believe in gods and goddesses?" he challenged Ash, almost playfully. "Then what's keeping me here? I mean, if I disbelieve it, it can't be real, right? Have any of you tried that yet?"

Zack laughed, rubbing the back of his neck as he stepped inside after Chase. "Somehow... I don't think that will work," he said, flashing another grin before taking a look around at the inside of the mansion. For a place that they were supposedly trapped in forever, it didn't look very threatening.

Somehow a mansion like that seemed like it should have blood dripping from the walls and cobwebs everywhere. This didn't quite fit the bill. It was impressive, however.

He stopped a yard or so inside, propping his hands on his hips and tilting his head back to look at the ceiling. Gods, huh? That was different.

Acheron chuckled softly, “I can name at least four people, right off the top of my head, who do not believe in gods and goddesses who are still within the walls.” He lifted a shoulder, “So, if in fact that you do not believe I see no reason as to why you are still standing here.”

He smiled, and turned going over to the desk. “Trust me, if it were that easy then I’m sure more people would be gone.” Would he mention the fact that the two of them were standing before a live and living god? Hell no. Why? The less they knew the better off they would be.

Acheron picked up their keys, eying them for a moment before he grabbed up the two maps that also accompanied them. Turning he handed them their respective keys and maps. “The maps have everyone listed out on them, what room they are in. It also has the kitchen, game rooms and so forth listed out.” Once they’d taken them he folded his arms over his chest and regarded them for a moment. “Anything else I can help you guys with?”

Chase regarded the key, and the map, and he shook his head. He really did have to wonder what he'd gotten himself into (or what someone else had gotten him into; either way).

"Nah. I'm sure we can figure this out," he said, gazing at the room number on his key. Third floor, huh? Nothing like a few sets of stairs every day to keep in shape. Smirking to himself, he consulted the map. "Is this self-updating?" he asked a little flippantly, but he imagined it must be ... if it listed everyone on it.

A brief scan for familiar names came up with nothing, so the map was folded and shoved into a back pocket. He glanced over to Zack before returning his gaze to Ash.
