"Right, the horses," she said, smiling at the joke. Checking on the horses, otherwise known as the lamest and and most transparent excuse to see an ex in history. She was never very good at coming up with reasonable excuses, and this time wasn't any different. She thought about making a joke about skewering him anyway if he wasn't treating the horses right, but the joke died before she could even open her mouth. The sight of the box in his hand killed it.
She didn't say anything when he handed it to her, she just glanced at him and smiled a little nervously at his "something pretty" remark. She started opening it right away - there was no sense in waiting, was there? Better to get it over with quickly. She removed the red paper with care, preferring not to rip it like an overeager child, but stopped momentarily once she saw the blue box and realized what it was. A box from Tiffany's. He'd gotten her jewelry. She raised an eyebrow slightly, but continued opening the box until she saw the diamond snowflake necklace inside. Something as nice as this was the last thing she expected, and it very nearly took her breath away.
"This is beautiful," she said softly, and she looked away from the necklace to look at him. "Thank you, Michael." Without thinking about it, she leaned over and kissed his cheek, then, realizing what she did, avoided his gaze and let out a nervous laugh. "Sorry. That was... well, never mind. Will you help me put this on? My hands are kinda full."
