Summary: Derek decides that it's time to get everyone on the same page
Derek decided that it was time to get everyone up to speed. Announcements before classes were nice and well, but it wasn't the way he liked to run things. He didn't know how Callen ran his team, but that would have no impact on his decision. Instead after class, he asked everyone to join him at the house for lunch. He included Hall, because while she was not part of his team, she would be working closely with Kepner and he wanted her to know what might happen.
He had pizza delivered and then got everyone settled in the office. It was a tight squeeze around the table, but it would do. He gave them time to eat and when they were about done, he spoke up. "All right, I brought you here so we can work a few things out. We're using this room, because our routines are the best way to get to us, therefore no one should be discussing them at length unless in a secure place. Now, I know most of you have already heard variations of these rules, but I thought I'd make it clear for everyone. Please understand that I'm not trying to control your lives, but we need to follow a minimal set of rule for everyone's security and knowing where you are is critical.
"First, going off base. Right now, the only people allowed to go are Westen, Blye and Vail. I still want to know when you're going out and where. Everyone else needs to ask Westen or Blye, depending on where you live, if you need to go outside. Understand that we aren't your escort service. Unless it's important, don't ask," he said, looking around. "If you don't feel comfortable asking a specific thing to one of them, ask the other or come to me. Second, while on base, I still need to know where you are. I don't mean that I need a minute by minute report, but if you're deviating from your schedule, let Westen or Blye know. There should never be a time when we don't know where you are. Third, nights. You should be in your house. If you are allowed to sleep over other ICIS homes if you tell us. You will never sleep over any of the soldiers' quarters and you will not invite them to our homes." He looked at Kinney when he started to complain. "I know, I'm sorry, but we can't do otherwise. If you are going with one of the soldiers, plan to leave between midnight and one. After that, you need to be at the house. Best I can do."
He knew that some of them would complain about that, but there was nothing to be done. "Finally, common sense. We're all adults, and I'm not going to sit here and write rules for every possible contingency, but common sense goes a long way. If you're going out with someone from Callen's team, just call me, make sure the other person calls as well. If you need to discuss rules, do it in one of the safe rooms. Both this office and the basement in Westen's house are secure. Use them. Hanna, Caffrey and in part Hall, I know you're in a strange situation, when in doubt, inform both teams of what's going on. Same would apply to any tech that needs to work with Callen. Give me a call and let me know. Don't rely on him to tell him. He may or may not have the time. It's your responsibility and not his."
There were all the rules he had wanted to discuss, but something else came to mind. "All right, another finally: powers. If you develop your powers, you come straight to me. Not Westen, not Blye, not your best friend, not your lover. You come to me. Hall, obviously you'd go to Callen. Caffrey and Hanna, we've already agree that both Callen and I will need to know yours because of living and working situation. I'm done with the rules, so now you can breathe. There is something else. We will use one afternoon a week to go out as a group. Days will change. During this trips, you'll be able to do some shopping too, but the main point is to learn what life is outside of this base. And now I'm really done. You get an extra half hour for lunch and then we'll meet back up at the team center. Feel free to hang out here until then."
