RP: Sunday Dinner
Who: Everyone
Where: Mike's house
When: Sunday
Summary: Sunday dinner plus Eric's birthday.

Mike detested these weekly dinners, not because they were all getting together, but because they were on Sundays. It reminded him of his father, who always insisted on a big family dinner on Sundays, and the man was a despicable asshole who Mike did not like being reminded of.

On the bright side, this was also Eric's birthday. So after dinner they had cake, ice cream, and sang Happy Birthday.

Eric was conflicted. On the one hand it was his birthday, his friends were there and they were celebrating him which was nice. On the other it felt strange to celebrate when only two days ago they'd buried Abby.

In the end though, he decided that Abby wouldn't have wanted to be the cause of grief. Not the Abby he knew at least.

He smiled as they sang, not sure if he was more embarrassed about their singing or about the fact that they were singing for him. When it was over he grabbed some cake and walked around saying thank you to people.

Kensi was glad that they hadn't not celebrated Eric's birthday. It would have been far stranger to let it pass by without notice and yet with Abby's funeral so recent, she hadn't been sure if Eric would have wanted to celebrate. Mike had made an effort and had gotten a cake and ice-cream and whilst it wasn't a huge affair, it was nice and comfortable.

"Hey," she said, tapping him on the back as he walked away from somebody else. "I just wanted to say happy birthday. And that I hope you're okay..." She paused, debating whether to continue. "I know you and Abby were kinda close."

Turning when he felt the tap on the shoulder, Eric smiled when he saw Kensi. "Hey," he said. "Thanks." His smile fell a bit when Kensi mentioned Abby, but he nodded all the same.

"I'll be fine," he said, which of course didn't mean that he was just yet. "I'm trying to remember what she was like back home, when she was still the Abby I knew. I figured she'd want me to make the most of life. She always did." Unlike what she'd been here.

"How are you doing?" he asked. "Getting used to not being on OSP?" Which was so weird, still. It wasn't his business and he wasn't one to get involved, but it was still strange that Dom and Kensi weren't part of their team.

"She definitely would. Abby Sciuto was nothing if not unique and very vibrant," she said, agreeing with him. It was best to think of Abby at her best, as she had been in their dimension. This Abby had deteriorated quickly from what Kensi had heard. Arriving so late, she didn't know the full extent of it.

"I'm... Getting used to it," She shrugged. "MCRT isn't as familiar." That was the short version; Kensi didn't think Eric probably wanted to know that she was still kind of pissed she wasn't on OSP but throughout the last couple of weeks, she'd realised that it was more the sense of belonging that she missed. She'd always known her place on that team and how she fit into it and then suddenly, it had gone. "How about you? Are you still enjoying it?"

She glanced across to where Savannah was, having noticed her demeanor throughout the dinner and celebrations. She didn't look happy and wasn't her usual self at all. "Talking of OSP, what's up with her?" she asked Eric, wondering if he knew what was wrong.

"That strange, huh?" he said, not asking if she didn't want to talk about it. He would have been so pissed off if it was him, and he knew Dom had been, especially for Kensi, but he wouldn't make her talk about it or anything. "How are the people there?" he asked instead, curious about her take on them.

"The work is different here," he said when she asked, and that was an understatement. In one way, it was so cool, the dimensional travel, trying to find out what material to access, and how to access it without anyone knowing. On the other he missed his toys back home, and the work they did there. The differences in systems were subtle and small, and it was interesting researching the differences. Then there was the set up in the safe house, finding the right things, checking prices, all without anyone finding out what he was doing. Some of it he could do when he went to get games or consoles privately, it was easy enough to note the prices of other things than the ones he actually bought. Some prices and specs he had to look up online, after making sure no one would be able to trace what he was doing.

"It's so cool in many ways, but it's not the same as it was back home at all. I miss the Ops-center."

Eric looked at Savannah and shrugged his shoulders. "Not sure," he said. "I haven't exactly asked and I don't live in the house." Given Savannah's obvious displeasure he was rather glad for that. "I'm glad I'm not Marty today though."

"Kind of. Teams have different dynamics though, we all know that. The people are great, very friendly and open. That's the bit I'm not so used to," she said, smiling crookedly. "I still think I prefer living along to with others but at least there's eye candy in the house."

"Are you on a much more basic system?" Kensi asked. She didn't understand techy stuff too much beyond how to work her phone and computer but she knew that the techs were only very good at what they did because they had tools that enabled them to search faster, do things quicker. "The ops-center was awesome. Hell, the entire office was brilliant. And there was real sunshine."

"Me neither. If they haven't had an argument already, it looks like one's brewing," she said, glancing at Savannah again before putting the thought aside. She'd perhaps talk to her later and find out what was wrong although she didn't want her head bitten off for trying to be nice.

"The friendly and open?" Erik asked with a grin, though he wasn't sure he got it, because as far as he was concerned he thought the team was open and friendly, or at least friendly. They knew each other well enough that they didn't feel the need to share everything, they knew what they needed to know and they knew each other's personalities well enough to know when to talk and when to just leave each other alone. Most of the time at least. "Open how?" he asked. "Like sitting down and sharing info or getting to know personal stuff or what?"

He just smirked at the eye-candy comment. "Seems you have your priorities figured out," he teased.

When she asked him about the system however, he knew he could speak forever. "Yes, definitely. I mean you know the system we have back home, or the basics of it at least. The things I can do with that is amazing, while this... well it has its limits." He stopped himself from going off into an explanation of the various differences and technical specifications, reminding himself that Kensi most likely wouldn't be all that interested. When she mentioned the weather though, he didn't stop himself at all.

"Oh my god, yes!" he said at the mere mention of sunshine. "There was water, and beaches and you could go surfing, and walk around in shorts and flip flops without freezing. If we could just do all of this on a base in Los Angeles that would have been so much better." Not that he didn't wear shorts here, as well as flip flops, but on colder days even he had to wear real shoes here.

"Yeah," he agreed, deciding to stay out of that one.

"As in Morgan would probably happily take you through a full and detailed version his life story without you having to ask specific questions to get the information out," Kensi replied, smiling. "Do you see Callen or Sam wanting to do that in a hurry? Dom is Dom, I guess, the same but different and it's when I think I have him figured out that something happens and I remember he's not. Tim is ... Tim's fun but this is just a world away from what he was doing before. I still don't know Jenna yet but I hear she's as in to sharing as Sam is," Kensi chuckled. "Morgan's going to hate us all soon."

Kensi's smile widened. "Of course," she replied. "Eye candy's very important after a hard day's training when there's no first date to perk me up in the evening."

"I'd settle for a few days of extra sunshine. I miss California," she said with a small frown. "Not LA so much but the office, Camp Pendleton, the gorgeous beaches and hiking routes. That, I do miss."

Eric blinked. "Seriously?" he asked, trying to imagine anyone, not even Sam or Callen, doing that. "Why?" It wasn't that he didn't get sharing info, just not all the info. Why would anyone talk that much with people you barely knew? He nodded as she went on about the others. "Dom will never be our Dom, but he's still mostly himself," he said.

"I don't even want to imagine what it would be to be thrown into this head first without a choice or an idea that it was coming." He looked at Sam's daughter as Kensi mentioned Jenna. "I didn't even know Sam had a daughter before," he admitted. "Did you?"

Her comment made him laugh. "We're in a base full of soldiers, surely there would be some who could be kind enough to offer you a first date," he teased.

"A few days would be great. I miss it too."

April and Savannah

Since discovering her power, April had been training with Savannah a few times a week. Therefore she'd noticed that something had been off for the last three weeks, but when asked Savannah had just told her that she was thinking things over and would tell her when she could. Today though, something must have happened. Savannah was quieter than usual, and it was impossible not to pick up that something was wrong.

Which was the main reason (other than the fact that she liked talking to Savannah in general) that she walked up to her today. "Hi," she said with her usual friendly smile. "Are you OK?" she asked. "You seem a little bit off."

Savannah was staying clear of Marty. She didn't want to talk to him just yet. The whole 'let's be friends' thing was very nice and Christian, but right now she'd rather not talk to him at all. Maybe in the future, and certainly she wouldn't try to have their first conversation in public.

When April came over, she smiled at her. "Hey, there." She nodded. "I'm okay. Marty and I broke up, but-" She shrugged. "You know how it goes, but I'm okay."

"You broke up?" April asked, surprised, but most of all sympathetic. "Are you sure? Do you want to talk? We could go somewhere with less people, the kitchen or some other room or even to our house." Whether she wanted to talk or cry or just wanted company, April would be there for her. "Is there any hope that you'll get back together or is it permanent?" she asked.

Moving she pulled Savannah into a quick hug. Nothing too long or noticeable when they were still around people. "How does it work with living arrangements?" she asked. "Are you staying in the house? Is he? Do you even have the option of not living together?" She couldn't imagine breaking up with someone and being forced to live in the same house with them.

Savannah nodded. "We did, and yeah, it was mostly my doing, so I'd better be sure." She shook her head. "No, here's fine. It's not like things don't spread around quickly enough around here. I'd rather have things out in the open."

She shrugged. "I don't know, April. It's not that we don't love each other, but we want different things. I guess, we'll wait and see."

She hugged her back, smiling. "Oh, yes, I'm still there, and so is he. I doubt that they'd change everyone around to accommodate our break up. I just moved into a different room."

"You broke up? Why?" April asked, confused, though as Savannah explained things became more clear. "He doesn't want the family that you do, is that it or am I completely wrong?" she guessed. Savannah might have said that a family was out of the question here, but April was fairly certain that she hadn't just changed her mind on something she'd believed so strongly in.

"Isn't that going to be hard on the both of you?" April asked with concern. "You know that if you want, you're always welcome over to our place, right? Whenever you need some space."

"Not exactly the family. He doesn't want to get married, and I can't really be with someone without the marriage. Well, not that i can't, but I won't. It feels wrong for me, no mater what everyone else says," she said, trying to smile. "I know most people find it strange but this is who I am."

Savannah shrugged. "We're both adults and that's our team. We need to work together, trust each other. It's much easier to stay there." And there was no way that she would be the reason there were problems with the team. She might have made many mistakes, but they wouldn't be able to accuse her of letting their personal lives influence the work side of things. "I might stop by one of these days, if we ever get some free time," she added, chuckling.

Re: April and Savannah

Marriage wasn't something April thought about for herself. After all, she couldn't even get someone to sleep with her, so it wasn't much of an issue. She did however, understand the importance of marriage. Even if she unlike Savannah did not think it wrong to be in a sexual relationship without marriage, she could still understand her point of view. Her parents had married young and stayed together for their entire lives - happily so - and marriage was an institution which April greatly valued.

"I don't find it strange," she said. "You have to do what is right for you, or you won't feel good about yourself. If you don't do that how can any relationship last? I just hope he comes around and sees what he stands to loose."

She nodded as Savannah went on. "You're always welcome, for whatever reason."

Savannah smiled at her. "Thanks. I'm glad someone understands, but it's really all right. He... I don't want him to change for me, if you know what I mean. If he changes, it should be because it's what he wants, and not because he wants me happy, or some other reason. I don't want him to resent me."

She nodded. "Thank you, that's very kind of you." She grinned at April. "What about you? Anything you should be sharing? Mike, perhaps? What about the house? Are you doing better with Peter and Neal? I hope you are."

"Then I hope he realizes that what he wants is you, and being married to you, but I suppose time will see."

April blinked at the question, not knowing quite how to respond at first. "Mike?" she asked, putting off the light blush as being embarrassed by the fact that anyone would think that. She shook her head. "Why would I have anything to share about Mike? I told you, we're just friends, very good friends, but just friends." The words came just a touch too quickly, but really, it was... just so incredible that someone would picture her and Mikey. Even if she had been interested, which she was not, someone like Mikey wouldn't be interested in her. Besides, he kept looking at Savannah's legs when she was around, not that she'd tell Savannah that.

"The house is fine," she said instead, changing the topic. "I know I had a slight overreaction - or a big one - but I'm fine. Neal lent me some of his art-books and Peter is nice, just like you said. It was just a weak moment, please just forget that day? I had no reason to react the way I did."

Savannah shrugged. "They are really different from us. Maybe he will and maybe he won't, but I won't be the one pushing. It's really up to him."

She smiled. "Yes, Mike, because you seem to like him and he is a very nice man, and it's not like in this place we have many options." At this point, she didn't want any options. She had found the man she wanted, and she wasn't going to look for a replacement just so that she could get married. "I'm sure you are really, really good friends, and maybe you can be more. You never know unless you try it, and maybe it won't work, but I still think that it's worth the disappointment. I wouldn't change anything that happened with Marty. I got to know an amazing man."

She chuckled. "It happens to all of us. To me more than others, so I totally understand, and it's fine, really. I just wanted to make sure that you were settling in all right."

April looked down and shook her head. "He is a very nice man," she agreed. "But there is nothing between us. I keep telling you, we're just friends," she insisted, the last words said while looking back up at Savannah. "I know you want people happy, but I'm fine, I promise."

"For the record, I'm glad you wouldn't change things. You shouldn't regret something that made you happy, even if it didn't last."

"I did not say that there was anything going one," she said, smiling. "I'm saying that there will never be anything unless you do something about it. Men are so clueless unless it's about sex, and suddenly they know all about it, but if you want something else, maybe just dinner, or a movie, then you might want to say something. Mike is really sweet. You'd have fun, even if there's still nothing between the two of you. You can be friends who do things together, instead of just training."

She reached over and squeezed April's arm. "You should be happy, too, and I don't mean just with a scalpel and a few lessons on biology."

April laughed, and rolled her eyes slightly at her. "We hang out together and I know he can be fun, we lived together remember," she said. "You're seeing things that aren't there, and that won't be there, no matter how sweet Mikey is." And he was sweet. She was still touched by his words the other night. How he'd just let her cry and told her he'd be around. If she would be interested in someone it would be him. He was in many ways perfect, but none of that mattered because men just weren't interested in her, and she was not going to imagine something that wasn't there. It might ruin the friendship and that she was not prepared to think about. Not that she was interested, she just wouldn't allow herself to be.

"Don't worry about me, Savannah," she assured her. "I might miss my scalpel, but I'm adjusting to the idea that I might never be the surgeon I want to be. If it happens it happens, if not I'll make the most of what I have here."

Kensi & G
[info]kensi_blye
2011-05-01 08:54 pm UTC (link)
Kensi had chatted to Eric for a while and had turned around to find herself standing next to Callen. Morgan's words hadn't been lost on her, she knew she'd been avoiding her old boss in the politest way possible, but it had turned into a bigger deal than she had expected it to. She had originally just been pissed about OSP and not being on the team but not talking for a couple of days had actually turned into a lot longer than that.

"Hi," she said, giving him a quick smile. "How are you doing?"

Re: Kensi & G

G was slightly amused by the bemused look on Eric's face as the rest sang him happy birthday. It was odd how much easier it was to stay on the sidelines during lighter occasions. Although, he supposed it made sense. Less problems during 'celebrations'. Only those who thought he should 'enjoy' himself at these things tried to talk him into it. And those were few.

Which was why he wasn't expecting to be approached, and certainly not by Kensi, who'd been very clearly avoiding him since units were assigned.

"Hey." He flashed a bit of his usual half-smirk/half-smile in greeting. "I'm alright. Can't complain more than any other. How's my favorite agent?" he asked, using the the same pet term he'd used when he'd first seen her again after his shooting.

Kensi smiled at the affectionate term even though she was half-tempted to frown and retort with some kind of sarcastic comment about how she couldn't be if she was working on another team and not on OSP.

That wouldn't help though and so she kept her mouth shut on the subject for the moment.

"I'm good," she said honestly. "Though it wouldn't be hard to be your favorite compared to say, Deeks. I don't know how you guys haven't killed him yet," she added teasingly.

G chuckled and shook his head. "Nah, there's no fun to be had in killing him. We'd have to go through the trouble of finding a new fall guy and breaking him in, training him up to keep going when he really should stop. Much more pragmatic to keep Deeks around for amusement."

Of course, Deeks was one of the few around G would trust at his six if Sam wasn't there. So, joking aside, it was easy not to want to kill him.

"Besides," he added, winking at her teasingly, "I don't worry about Deeks being able to kick my ass the way I might a certain Marine brat I know."

"Ah so Deeks is kept for comedy purposes. That makes sense. He's not even aware of his comedic value," she said with a snort. She missed Marty being her partner; they were just starting to get it together when the team had effectively disappeared. "Although he seems to be behaving himself a lot more since Savannah came on the scene."

She glanced at Savannah again, noticing she still didn't look at all happy. Kensi was still curious but she wasn't going to get into the middle of some domestic argument.

"Ah, well, ass kicking is a Blye special but I'm sure Sam would help you out if you're missing it that much," she dead-panned, hesitating for a moment before asking her next question. "How is the team anyway?"

"Amoung other things," he agreed with a chuckle. Following her glance, he saw Savannah talking to April and bit back a sigh. There wasn't much he could do for the two of them if they couldn't resolve this themselves other than remain nearby to support them. G only hoped, given time, things would change again. The short history between these two was already so full of on agains and off agains. There was always a chance. Returning his attention to Kensi, he shrugged. "I'm told finding the right person changes things."

G snorted softly. "Who do you think puts me through my paces when we're done putting everyone else through theirs?" Not for the first time he wondered if he was the only one who saw the larger picture as she asked her next question. Her inflection made it clear she meant OSP, even if G continued to think of the units making up a team as a whole. "They're well enough. Some adjustments have been needed since the kids got here. I might be bored without terrorists shooting at us," he added with a smirk. "That's just the unit, though. You'll have to tell me how things are fairing with your unit before I could speak for the whole team."
