"They would have. But I could have kept my nose clean on what I had put away," he admitted, more honest than he had even been with Peter. Neal had made a fortune and kept it; the feds hadn't been aware of all of his deals.
"Always be prepared? Why, of course," He laughed a little. "Can't run cons if you're not prepared for the unexpected. Even more so when you're working for the bureau and trying to con a con man."
"For me? Probably," Neal was still conflicted over the work he did but the bridges he had burned had, for the most part, been with people he hadn't liked very much. Mozzie was still his friend and to Neal, that was all that mattered. "It's not nice, having to bring past acquaintances down but.. For the most part, they were that. Acquaintances. The people I worked with- One's dead," He swallowed hard. "And the other two sometimes help the bureau if I ask. It means my side turning a blind eye occasionally but it's worth it for their help."
Neal paused. "You know, this is the most I've talked about this. Other people, even Peter... They don't get it."
