RP: Moving out
Who: Everyone
Where: The island
When: Sundown, Sunday, February 10, 2013
Summary: They get ready to leave the island

The day had been spent packing up what they could. They would have to make other trips here. The plane and the supercomputer were their most important assets that could not be taken, but they also had limited space.

Leon was not going to be caught unprepared, though. They had resources that they could take with them. The first was the gas tanker. He also planned for two of the trucks and two jeeps from the island. With the new people and the one van missing, they would be needing the extra vehicles anyway.

The biggest problem was moving them. They couldn't be taken on the boats, which meant Callen had to teleport all five vehicles and after that, he was unavailable for everything else. He had Reese and Nell on the tanker, Renko and Donovan on a truck and Riggins and Alexis on the other. The vans had respectively Deeks and his family; Sean, Bolton, Bud, Elaine and Margaret; Marks, Thomas Hammond, Callen and his two kids; Doug Hammond, Isles, Vail and his son. One jeep was occupied by Brian, John and himself, while the other had Queen, Merlyn, Cooper and Green.

The boat trip went longer than usual, because they had to be careful, and then they still had a six hour trip. By the time they got to the safehouse, it was time to rest. No one was allowed anywhere, not knowing where the traps were. Tomorrow they could deal with all of that. Tonight, they could settled down and get some deserved rest.

Claudia/Mike on the truck

Claudia alternated between being numb and crying ever since they got the news. It made it difficult to do her job and that had been as important as ever with the possibility of another rift popping up on the island. But Eric was her friend, her closest one. Sure, others knew him longer and probably better, but that didn't make her hurt any less. Neither did the fact that they were survival partners and she'd unknowingly let him disappear. Possible for forever.

The tears came again, and while she tried to hold them back, a sob escaped her. "Damn it." She scrubbed at her face, trying to clear her eyes. "I can't keep watch like this. No failing another partner, Donovan."

Mike was keeping a close eye on the dark, icy, road as they drove up the mountains, making sure they stayed on the road instead of going off it. It helped that he knew these roads, and that he could see further in the dark than others could.

While his main focus was on getting them to the safe house in one piece, a part of his focus was on Donovan. It was clear to anyone that she wasn't doing all right, but especially to him.

So far he'd been pushing the news away, focusing only on what had to be done. If he also kept an ear and eye on everyone in the family - especially Dom and Sean - he didn't say so. What he was definitely not focusing on was himself. Jenna had been... well sort of family, but also a part of his team. His responsibility. Eric-

The man had had his back in more situations than he could remember, supplying him with information, creating covers... They had never been actual friends, they'd been far too different, but he'd liked the other man well enough.

Donovan, however, had become close to him. Anyone would have been a fool not to see it. She might not have known him the longest but she might be the one to miss him the most.

When she spoke, he didn't even take his eyes off the road. "I got eyes enough for the both of us, Donovan," he said. "And ears for that matter." It wasn't as if he wasn't constantly scanning for sounds that didn't belong. He didn't ask her how she was, he could easily tell just how well she wasn't, so what was the point. However, he didn't see the point in her feeling guilty about something she couldn't change either.

"You didn't fail Eric by leaving him with Jenna for a couple of minutes, if you'd been there the only difference would have been that you would have been dead too." Even as he said it he didn't take his eyes off the road for a second.

"I know. I couldn't have reached him in time even if I knew about it, since I was on stage," Claudia sniffled and pushed at the tears still falling. "Logic doesn't trump guilt or grief in any card game. I really should be blaming Vance for tempting the Grim Reaper by faking Savannah and John's deaths. Not that it would do any good. It won't bring Eric back. There's no metronomes lying around this time."

"Not in the short run," Mike answered. "In the long run, if you say it enough times, you'll realise that it's true." Not that he actually believed that, but he was a good liar and right now it was what Donovan needed to hear.

"Blaming anyone won't help," he added. "Without Vance, we'd all be dead by now. For one, we wouldn't have anywhere to go right now if he hadn't planned ahead, something Eric would have told you too." Now that, at least, he was sure of.

He frowned when she mentioned metronomes. "What does Metronomes have to do with anything?" he asked, before shaking his head. "Actually, don't answer that, I'm sure I don't want to know and you shouldn't be telling me."

"Yeah, I know. It would be so much easier with someone to blame, but there isn't besides the stupid scientists who started this mess to begin with," Claudia said. She managed to get a hold of her self, sort of. "We were going to watch a Flinstone's marathon today, you know? Something simple and fun, and now fun's been taken off the table again. This dimension really sucks."

"The one we're going to will suck more," Mike said, more a statement of fact than anything else. Anyone not realising that at this time, needed to face reality. He also wouldn't offer platitudes that they'd one day find their way home, that everything would be okay, mostly because he didn't believe it.

There was also the part of him who wasn't sure if he wanted to go home again or not. It wasn't as if they were able to return to their families, and home he'd most likely lose the family he'd gained here. They might be good at pretending everything was fine, but he and Robert both knew that this wouldn't last if they ever returned. It wasn't even that they didn't love each other, he was sure Robert did even if neither said it to the other, but it was one thing ignoring things here. Back home, if they ever got to return, things would be vastly different.

He glanced over at Donovan for a moment, then back at the road. "Blame doesn't really help," he said, knowing how much Robert would disagree with that. "Bottom line, losing a friend sucks in any dimension. Not much you can do about it."

"I pretty much got that from the type of training we're doing and Derek saying so, which is why it's so important to have fun and play video games and watch movies and do as much irreverent things as possible before they disappear."

Claudia was actually glad they had to move, because once surfing would've been permitted again, she'd have been a ball of bawling at the water's edge on the island. Losing Eric wasn't nearly the same as losing Steve had been, in the friend category, but it still hurt a lot and she really didn't have anyone to blame because it was a freak accident.

"I've lost a lot of family and friends, and no, it doesn't get any easier to deal with and sucks beyond all sucking. I know I'll keep on keeping on, because it's not my first time at this rodeo. I'm just going to be an off and on blubbery mess for a couple weeks."

"They're not irrelevant," Mike answered. "Just like Savannah's parties aren't. They reduce stress hormones, create other hormones. I'm sure Dr. Isles could explain the effects on the body in detail and how it relates to your health." He just knew that he could smell the difference between someone who was stressed out and someone who wasn't.

He just nodded as she continued, as there was nothing more to say. They all dealt with things in their own way. "As long as you keep your head on when needed, people will understand that."
