The day before, Eric had spent the day keeping their suspect under surveillance. Leon had asked Nell to start looking at Chicago and possible ties. While making the connection could be easy, he was not going to send a hit squad after a man without more information.

And this was a hit squad.

There were no judges and juries here. If the suspect turned out to be bad, they'd have to kill him, but there was still the possibility that he wasn't bad. So he waited, and he had Deeks and his team looking at the evidence and going over Morgan's file.

It was after lunchtime when Deeks arrived to his office. Leon closed the door. "It looks like it's him." He'd already gotten the report from Nell. "We also don't know for sure." If Sam had been around, he'd have sent the man and let him deal with it, but Sam wasn't around and he had to deal with Deeks. It wasn't that he didn't like the man, but he was a cop through and through, and that came with a different set of morals. "Can you make sure that it is him?" Leon was being careful not to ask how. "And if it is, we need to ensure a natural death. We have drugs in the infirmary that can happen if those are necessary, however, there should be no marks. If you have any objections, we can send Mr. Reese's team."

Marty pursed his lips, turning over what Vance was asking in his mind. He was under no illusions that someone like G or Sam had been asked to do this sometime in their past. But, Marty wasn't military and he wasn't an agent or a spy. He was a cop. He collared the bad guys and let someone else hash out the details of what justice entailed. Hell, he was from California where they had the Death Penalty and never actually used it. So, there really weren't any executioners around once the judge and jury finished.

He knew, from their earlier discussion some time ago, that Vance knew there was more to his power than Marty and G had let on. And, he appreciated the discretion even now in the way the Director posed his questions. But it wasn't a question of means. He knew from experience he had the power necessary to find out if this was the man they'd sought and to make it look like a natural death, no one the wiser, even his own unit.

It was the fact he was being asked to make that call, to decide if this was a man who needed to die, that made Marty take his time before answering. This wasn't what he did. It sure as hell wasn't what he'd signed up for at any time. But, his hands were tied.

Vance's hands were tied.

They couldn't let this guy continue on if he was the killer they'd hunted, not because he needed to be brought to justice, which he did. No, because his actions were a threat to their own security, the security of the team, his family. Hell, even the those who had abandoned the team and then put them in this position in the first place.

"I can get it done," he said after a couple moments. "It'll be cleaner if I do it."

"Mr. Deeks...." He hesitated a moment. Usually once the order was given, they moved forward, but again, Deeks wasn't an NCIS agent. "This is no different than going after a terrorist with a rifle. You take the shot before he can hurt people."

He knew that no matter what rational explanation Deeks gave himself, he'd still have to deal with what he was about to do. "We have another problem. The way we got the information." He'd been thinking about it all night. A couple of cryptic statements over the phone, no explanations, and nothing that they could find out without putting everything in an email. While Leon was sure about the safety of their communications, he couldn't say the same about the situation on the other end.

"I'm going to speak with them. This is something I need to do, because we can't let those three put us in danger, not after we've taken so many steps to become invisible," he said. "I'll take Callen with me, but I need another team. Let me know who you want to take so we can decide on who will be in charge here while we're gone."

"I know, Sir. Thank you." Marty appreciated the effort but he didn't want to rationalize this. He'd do what he had to do and then deal with the consequences without excuses.

He snorted when Vance finished describing what he wanted to do.

"I'm sure they'll love that. So much love lost between Robert and them." Marty would kind of like to see that. But, he was going to be unavailable doing distasteful but necessary things based on their information. The question became who to take with them. Really, his task would be a solo in and out normally. But, he should take back-up and it would do Douglas good to go out and work an op with Marty as his partner. There wouldn't be any great chance of danger to Douglas. Marty shouldn't need to get that close.

"I don't need a full unit for this. I'll take my partner as back-up and it's a quick in and out. Travis and Thomas can join Delta Unit for training. I recommend taking Bravo Unit with you."

Leon doubted that Deeks accepted what he knew. It took time, it took men like Sam Hanna to do the job with unwavering acceptance, regardless of personal belief. Not that he doubted that Deeks would do the job, but only that he wouldn't deal with it as easily as Sam would have. Or even Callen.

"I'm sure I'm very concerned with what they love," he answered. "The Colonel can make this painless in case they decided to play coy with me." Leon wouldn't let anyone fuck with his team, especially not three people who had left their team.

"All right. Then we'll get Bravo unit to come with us. Put your wife in charge. She was Callen's replacement at the ranch." And if anyone had a problem, they could talk to him. "Let's get everyone ready. Wheels up in thirty."

Doug didn't know what the hell he was doing on a mission with Deeks. It wasn't that he didn't like the man, but he wasn't a damn agent, or cop, or whatever they called them. He wasn't supposed to go after criminals Or non criminals. Or anyone.

But he drove, following Deeks' directions. The man seemed to be looking everyone at once. Doug let him.

There was one positive thing about this trip. He could wear regular clothes. That had to be the only positive factor. He really really liked it.

When they parked, Doug waited to see what they were going to do. He'd be happy staying in the car and waiting for Deeks to catch this man.

Marty finally understood how G must have felt taking Savannah out when they first started this. Douglas Hammond was so green the idea of the two of them going after a potential serial killer was ridiculous and beyond risky. Hell, it really would make more sense to leave the Hammond brothers behind and bring Marks, the homicide detective, with him. But, that would undermine the work of partnering with Douglas after Jenna gave up in the first place. Only the fact he had no intention of getting close enough to even be seen let him relax and give his situational awareness a chance to maintain control, though.

First order of business was finding the guy and making sure he was a serial killer.

When Douglas pulled over, Marty bit back a groan. This had to be the worst place ever to set up a sniper hit. The buildings were all close and basically the same height. Only one way into the parking area. Except for a few units in the front, all the balconies were on the inside. If he hadn't known he wasn't really going to be setting up for a sniper hit, Marty would have called the op a bust and tailed the guy until they could find a better location.

As far as Douglas or anyone else knew -- which he didn't think was any other than Vance, really -- they were setting up a sniper hit. Two empaths in the car were hardly going to be lethal otherwise.

So, while he and Douglas went through the motions of observing the target through the window, plotting out the best location to set-up, Marty slowly and quietly slipped inside the target's mind. And, he was definitely 'the target'. If Marty let himself think of this guy as a person, even a criminal and a murderer, he wasn't going to be able to do this. It took only moments to sort through his thoughts undetected and find the memories of his kills, to locate the trigger for a power. From there, it was only a matter of sliding deeper, moving beyond conscious and subconscious thought to automatic brain reactions. He had much more finesse now than he had during that early training session when he'd told Sam to stop breathing. A moment was all it took to tell the target to stop breathing, tell the brain to let the heart stop beating.

By the time the target collapsed, Marty's attention was on the rooftops in the other direction, 'scanning' for a good vantage point.

Doug was listening to Deeks talk about vantage point, but he'd lived with the Secret Service most of his life. Every outing was planned and the family was briefed. It had gotten even worse when it was obvious that their mother was going to be the Democratic nominee. With being a woman and Bud Hammond's ex-wife, the nutjobs were likely to come out of the woodworks and Doug got even better at knowing where they should be, and where the Secret Service would be and what vantage points to watch out for. All of that made him come out and say.

"There's no vantage points unless you want to use a sniper rifle, being seen and possibly hit someone else." Of course by the time he finished speaking, the man was going down.

He did a mental recap. Serial killer, check. New guy on a team, check. Not a full team, check. A non-existent vantage point, check. Doug looked at Deeks for a moment. "Can we go?" He was tempted to ask if he was dead and how, but he knew that plausible deniability got you the truth a lot quicker and he wanted to go at this point. "There was a Starbucks when we got off the highway, just a few block. You know, if we should stay around."

Turning back to 'watch' what was happening, Marty reached out with his power again to gently 'nudge' the target's nearest neighbor to go investigate a strange noise from the target's apartment. He kept a feather light touch on the neighbor until he was certain she was heading for the target's apartment. A touch of concern added to her thoughts, a hidden suggestion to make sure she got the door open and called 911, and then he glanced back at Douglas.

"I could go for a Chai Mocha Frap. Sure. We'll stick around the area long enough to make certain." He had a walkie talkie with him. All he'd have to do is play around a bit to find the frequency emergency services used in the area. As long as they didn't speak over the air, no one would be the wiser. Except, perhaps, his partner. But, if Douglas suspected, perhaps it was just as well. "Let's go."

Indiana: Leon, Bravo, Robert, April, Eliot and Nate

Leon hadn't even had to think about this. Spencer and the other two were supposed to be in Indiana. Everything they had found for the three of them went back to La Porte, and yet, they were calling in the middle of the night, giving them direction for a serial killer. Or at least a possible serial killer. Leon would wait for confirmation on that.

He wanted to know how they knew, and more importantly if the group was in danger. This was not a discussion to be had over the phone, and he wasn't going to send Deeks for this. Instead, he traveled with Bravo team and took Robert as his own partner as they rented two cars and went from the airport to the house. "Ms. Castle, check to see where they are without attracting attention."

Alexis turned invisible and got out of the car, going to the windows of the house. She came back after a moment. "Eliot and April are in the living room. I didn't see anyone else."

Leon nodded. "Thank you." He got out of the car and waited for the others to do as well, before ringing the bell.

Cody raised and turned his head towards the window, letting out a low, "Woof." Eliot glanced down at the dog lying in front of the couch and then turned his head towards the curtained window as well. Changing his vision, he looked beyond the wall and saw someone small and female sneaking away from the house. For a moment, he thought it was a delinquent looking to do a lick by seeing if they were home, first. Then, he saw the gun, and saw her getting into a vehicle with others who had weapons.

"Take Cody. Get the bags," Eliot said, terse and quietly to April. His gaze swept around outside. He spotted another vehicle with more armed persons.

He rose, putting himself between April and the window until she was clear of it. He did a further sweep of the area around the house, but the only people he saw outside were those now getting out of the vehicles. He pulled his cell from his pocked and thumbed Nate's number. "Six armed outside," he told Nate when Nate picked up.

Now that the six were out of the cars, Eliot switched to normal vision and approached the door at an angle. The door was reinforced on the inside by metal, painted over. He peeped shortly through the peep hole, mindful that a sniper could shoot through it.

He didn't relax when he saw who all it was, and he growled into the still open line, "It's Vance and five others from the group. Be ready to leave. I'm keeping the line open for you."

Eliot put the cell in the breast pocket of his flannel shirt and turned towards April, who was waiting in the door frame to the bedroom with Cody at her side. "It's Vance, Alexis, Reese, Riggins, Nell, and Robert Callen."

The doorbell rang.

This had been something they'd rehearsed so many times and April was alert the moment she felt Eliot tense. Unlike him, she did relax some - if not entirely - when she heard who it was. In her mind she was making up excuses for the neighbors, trying to figure out what was most believable. She knew this area by now, the kind of people they lived close to. They'd be looking through their curtains right about now, watching and wondering who the six people were. It was a too mix group to say relatives, friends wasn't ideal, but would have to do.

Putting the bags within easy reach, April put a smile on her face and her hand on her hidden gun, then nodded to Eliot to open up. "Friends from back home," she said. "Smile."

Once Eliot opened up, April was the one to greet them and usher them inside in a friendly manner, saying how glad she was to see them. When it came to Alexis, Nell, Tim and even Reese it was true, Vance and Robert she was less pleased about, though she made an effort not to show it. The house was warm and welcoming, everything picked out with care. Still there were the tell tell signs of the training they'd had. Glass ornaments in the windows, heavy furniture close by the door, the bug out bags within reach, the concealed gun April still wore everywhere.

She didn't ask why they were here, it was obvious why and while she might hate it she did understand it. She'd known from the start that Vance wouldn't let anyone risk the group, and risking their covers were risking the group.

"Come on in and sit down," she said, gesturing to the sofa and chair in the living room. "Can I get you anything? Coffee or tea perhaps?" She might not like the reason for them being here, or some of them being here at all, but she would not be rude or a bad hostess in her own home.

Leon sat down, with a smile on his face, although the rest didn't. Reese was already looking around, checking the windows, while the others took different corners of the room. They had left their rifles in the cars, under Leon's orders. Reese didn't like it, but even in the mid-West, assault rifles would be noticeable.

"No, thank you. We have things to discuss. Please, sit down. Do you know where Mr. Ford is? It would really save us time, instead of doing this twice." They would if they had to, but he'd rather not.

April didn't fail to notice the positions of the others, the way they didn't even try to mask this as anything but an interrogation, making sure to surround them, or trying to. Eliot of course didn't sit down, but held up his position against the wall. Cody was the only was truly at ease, running around greeting everyone.

"Nate lives upstairs. I'll go get him," she said, of course knowing that he'd have already heard the request. She would have sent Eliot, but she knew he'd never leave her alone with the group. Going over to Eliot as she and Nate entered, she put her arm around him - making sure not to block the access to his gun - offering him the calm she knew he needed.

Nate on the other hand went into the room completely calm, greeting people and taking a seat. She really hoped he wouldn't mention Sarah. "When it comes to Chicago, it's these two you should talk to," April said, getting straight to the point. "I wasn't there."

"It is what you're here to discuss, isn't it? To find out how they came across him and if they put our covers and the group at risk in the process?"

That did make his life easier in a way. "Yes, it is, but only in part. However it is my biggest concern." He looked at the other two. "Now, let's go over this. You live here. You work here. You have good jobs here, and yet, you found a serial killer in another town, in another state. Then you email me with very little information, give me even less information, leaving me to wonder what exactly it is that you two are doing, so let me ask. What the hell do you think you're doing, huh?"

Nate didn't even glance at Eliot before he decided to answer. Eliot didn't talk much usually, and now he would be feeling defensive and protective. He on the other hand was much more at ease, not because he didn't see the severity of the situation but because being at ease was the best method of looking like you had nothing to hide.

He had to hand it to April, however, her assessment of Vance's reaction to the situation had been spot on, but then she'd shown herself to be a much better judge of character here than he'd ever thought back at the base.

"We were in Chicago for a weekend, driving back to our hotel when Eliot spotted him through a wall; burning his latest victim in an alley. We couldn't just drive on and pretend we hadn't seen anything so we decided to follow him and see where he lived and then contact you with his whereabouts."

Leon smiled even more. "That's... wow, there is incredibly lucky, isn't it? You left a very pregnant woman home to go to Chicago on the weekend, and were just driving around and Spencer happened to see him. I am-" He pretended to think for a moment. "Impressed that you think I'll buy such a lie. Oh I could go over the reasons, and I can have people talk about the percentages of such an event occurring. Or I can even have Eric go through kaleidoscope to check how many times your car was in Chicago, what areas, how often, but I'm not going to waste his time, because as I've stated, I don't believe you for a moment."

He got up and buttoned his jacket. "Let me explain something, gentlemen, I do not take kindly to anyone putting my team in danger. If we can find you, rest assured that the government can too, and once they find you, they will break you until you give them things that you didn't even know you knew, and don't even bother telling me how tough you are. Everyone breaks."

He smiled again. "Now, I have a little dilemma. You went off, found a serial killer, are lying about it, and I don't know what to do with you, because now I have to wonder when you will do the next stupid thing that will get all of us exposed, and right now, I have too much on my plate to worry about you three. So what would you suggest I do?"

"Leave. Your being here is putting us in danger more than anything else, and yourselves. Do you really think the three of us have the ability to find a serial killer that the police have been after for more than a year? The only reason we knew about the guy being in Chicago was because he was on the news. It was pure, dumb unluckiness, and I'm regretting wasting the money on a burn phone to contact you about it."

Eliot motioned to the door. "Go back to wherever it is you came from and stay there."

"Well, I could do that, and then have Eric trace all of your movements for the past few months, but then, if my suspicions are correct, and I am a very suspicious person, things wouldn't end so well." He continued to smile, ignoring the attitude. "And no, I don't think you three did this. I do believe your wife when she says she wasn't involved. She was too quick to the point for that not to be the truth."

He looked at April. "We also do have another problem. It has come to our attention that our bodies contain an antibody that does not appear to belong to any of the five known isotypes produced by humans. Now that might not mean much to you gentlemen, but I'm sure your wife does understand what it means. Let me explain it. She can't go to a hospital to give birth. If she does, you will be in the government's hand before she's discharged. Even if you manage to evade security, all of your covers will be burned."

He sat down again. "So, let me ask you again. What do you think I should do?"

April did know what that meant, and she did know the implications. It was one of the many reasons she'd been hesitant to leave and her grip tightened on Eliot at the words. Still, looking up at him she knew what their answer was. Risk or no risk, they couldn't possibly go back.

"Let us handle it," she answered, looking at Vance. "If we can't go into the hospital, then I'll give birth at home," she said. "I know the risks, you know I know the risks, but we're building a life here. A real one. Going back only to protect ourselves from the risk of child birth? It wouldn't be right. We will do what's necessary to stay safe, to keep our family safe."

"As for the rest, I do understand your concern, you're protecting the group. I respect that. But think about their personalities, and then look at what they did, or rather what they didn't do. They didn't intervene, they didn't make themselves known, they didn't put our covers on the line or risk exposing our powers to try and save the woman. They followed the man, they found out where he lived and they contacted you with the information. To protect all of us, not just the three of us but you too."

"As you said, we have good lives here. A home, good jobs. We have no reasons to put that on the line."

"No, you do not understand that. You've never given a damn about the group and that's where we have a problem, Doctor. They didn't do what they could to protect the group, because to believe that, I'd have to believe the ludicrous story that it was pure luck, and I don't believe in pure luck," he said. "Maybe you people don't know what Kaleidoscope is, but it's a very nifty program that lets you find and compare vehicles. You don't need plates either, and that would assume that you did change plates, but it matches things like dents and scratches, the smallest thing in a vehicle. So, I assume that your car can be found on Kaleidoscope in Chicago for more than a random weekend.

"Now, let's assume that it is true and it was a random weekend, you still put all of us in danger. One by following this man. If the government knows who he is, then they have you on their radar too. You have no way of knowing if they do or do not," he continued. "Three, they failed to give us the vital information of who this guy was, leaving us to guess, something I don't like to do. It also makes me wonder why you'd be lying to me. Four, it puts in danger the team that I sent to dispose of this guy."

He looked at April. "As you can see, they did plenty that caused my team to be exposed. If this were pure luck, they should have kept driving, because they did put all of that on the line. Now, I could go home, have Eric check on your story and then take action, but that gets really messy. So I'm left with few choices.

"Let me start with saying that I don't trust you - any of you, but I'm still not a killer. You've shown over and over that you will disregard orders and common sense to do what you want. Now, you expect me and my team to be at your beck and call. That got me thinking. Not only do you put us at risk, but while everyone else is working their asses off, you expect to live your lives and then just join us when we're ready to leave, and that doesn't sit well with me," he said. "Here are your options. One, we'll give you new papers. You leave this town, this car, these jobs and disappear, and I mean disappear. You do not call us, do not look for us, do not hope to come back with us when we leave. However, if you contact us or anything you do puts my team in danger, there will be consequences. Two, you come with us. You don't have to train, you do not have to be part of any teams. You stay there until we're ready to go. You will be provided for, you will have medical assistance and then you will have a few sets of IDs, money, you stay here and do what you want. Three, you come with us and do what I tell you. So what will it be?"

"No, we don't," April said. "Expect to join you when you leave, I mean."

"I won't pretend that it wasn't something we thought of when we first left, but we already know that we're staying whenever you leave. This isn't a temporary life for us. It's not a 'let's wait until we get a better offer one'. There are people I miss, there have been times when I've wondered if we made the right choice, but the longer we're here, the more I know this was right for us. So no, we're not going back. This is our life now, and to be honest we'd rather not take any of those options. If we have no choice, then the new papers, but most of all we just want to stay put and live our lives in peace in a place we've made home."

"I'll take the new papers," Nate answered. He knew this was his doing, he knew that Eliot hadn't wanted any part of it and only did it to help him, and that without him the two of them wouldn't have any problems with Vance again. His boredom, his problem. With new papers, he'd take the chance to leave the country, get out and leave Eliot and April in peace. He'd almost offered to come with Vance to get him off their backs, but with new papers in sight, it was the better option.

He almost added that Vance could save his time with Kaleidoscope, but then he didn't like the man well enough to spare him the trouble. The car had never even left the town, since they left it with April. Even if they hadn't been on a mission to find a killer, they wouldn't have taken it and left her without transportation. They'd rented a car in Chicago under th fake names they'd gotten in Nevada.

Nor would Vance find the car in Chicago at any other time. With only one car between the three of them, he'd always taken the train. Neither Eliot nor April would have agreed to anything else, nor had he even suggested it. Seeing how he spent his time in Chicago drinking more than anything he wouldn't have wanted to be in a car anyway. No Kaleidoscope wasn't something he worried about. If Vance chose to look, he'd find the car going between Michigan City and La Porte and never leaving the state.

"I don't think you should make these two leave, though," he said. "If I hadn't wanted to go to Chicago, Eliot wouldn't have been there."

"You don't understand. This isn't a negotiation. You pick one of the options given. End of story." They were lucky they were even being given those options. His inclination had been to take them with them regardless, but from now on, they'd just have to keep a very close eye on them and if anything happened, there would be no more discussions.

"If that's your decision." He turned to Nell. "Please give them their new set of documents. You have seventy-two hours to leave this place. Have a good life."
