RP: Mike and Robert
Who: Mike and Robert
Where: Their place
When: December 27
Summary: Mike and Robert talk

Mike wasn't a talker. He hadn't talked when his brother died, just got on with the job and followed through the motions, working harder to prevent the same happening to others. Now it wasn'Hhis brother who was missing, but the brother of the man he loved and he could see in Robert's behavior much of himself. Robert weren't talking, he was going through routine as if nothing had happened, but Mike knew what this kind of pain meant. Robert and Callen might not have had the relationship he'd had with his brother growing up together, but you'd have to be a fool not to see how much the family bond meant to the both of them.

And Mike wasn't a fool.

Things between him and Robert might have been strange for month. They both knew what the problem was, both were very good at ignoring it and pretending everything was fine. None of that mattered now though. Not when Callen and Sam were missing. So he stepped up and made sure to be there, take care of things while not asking. At least not at first.

Taking two beers out of the fridge, he walked over to the sofa where Robert was sitting. Handing him a beer he sat down next to him.

"You want to talk about it?" he asked.

"At least there is that," he said to the comment about Callen being with Sam. It meant that there was someone there to have his back. "It would be okay to be worried, even if Savannah is of course right," he added casually.

"Have any idea how much training it will take to succeed? I wouldn't want you to find yourself in the ocean because you couldn't make it the entire way." He took a swig of his own beer, looking over at Liam, then at Isabella sleeping next to him on her end of the sofa. It was crowded, and he suspected the bed would be even more crowded. So much for getting them their own rooms.

"No, it's not," Robert answered. "If you worry, you don't focus and you make mistakes. At this point, none of us can afford to make mistakes. I can't worry, because I have things to do, I have a son to worry about."

Robert shook his head. "I'm working with John and we'll figure out the specifics soon, though. After that, I'll have a better idea." He was already thinking of a night job, possibly on a Saturday night with the least amount of security, giving him time to stop and eat in between jumps. "They want us ready to deploy, which means we'll likely get G and the others as soon as we're ready to go. It's the only thing that makes sense." It wasn't. There was another possibility, but Robert refused to acknowledge it, not yet.

"Or you work harder, focus more, because you're aware of how much is at stake," Mike pointed out. Until there was no more hope, he had worked his ass off to try and get his brother out of those ruins, hoping against hope that he'd still be alive. When there was no more hope he'd still kept on working.

"I'm the last person to tell you not to focus, I know how important it is that you do."

Mike was only too aware of the option not mentioned, but he didn't bring it up. If it happened, it happened, and then he'd be there for Robert, but he hoped it wouldn't come to that. "We'll be ready, and hopefully soon. We'll get them back."

"You might work harder, but you can't focus more if your emotions override logic." In Robert's experience, it didn't matter if they were positive or negative emotions. Either would cause problems in the field.

"I know, but to focus, I can't worry about what's going on with G. He's alive. That's all I need. As long as he'd breathing, then we can rescue him. That's all." There was no room for anything other than a successful mission. It was strange that as long as G had been around, he'd coasted through. Now, he was thinking like a colonel again.

"No, not soon. It's nothing that will be done soon, which is another reason why I can't worry. I'll end up burning. We all will. Think SEALs, they take months to prepare a mission. This is exactly what we're doing from the orders." He looked down at Liam, sighing. "Except we have children with us."

"Emotions tend to be there whether you want them to or not," Mike commented. "It's your business, if you can keep them under control that's fine. If you ever feel you can't..." He shrugged, the offer was there in the words not spoken. Robert would take it if he needed it or not, either way he'd keep an eye on him and make sure he was fine - or as fine as he could be.

He didn't mention that they had no way of knowing if Callen was breathing or not, if any of them were or for how long. There was no need to state the obvious when pushing wouldn't help but rather do the opposite.

He nodded when Robert continued. "Yeah we do," he said looking at the two kids. "Kids, weapons, powers and military training - what a mix." Not that he'd ever regret having Isabella or Liam in his life, but he wondered if Isabella wouldn't have been safer without him.

"Do you seriously want to discuss feelings? Next, you'll ask me to paint your nails," he answered, rolling his eyes. "How long have we known each other? How often have you seen me feel anything but pure contempt for people? I'm fine, Mike. I'll be fine. I need to focus on this mission; that's all."

Robert's head lolled back, against the backrest. He turned it enough to look at Mike. "The weapons and military training are things I'm used to. The kids not really. They are still stranger than the powers. I still don't know if this was the right choice. If she had aborted him, she'd be alive, and Liam wouldn't have to live this life. I love him, more than anyone, but I still wonder, and now he's going to celebrate his birthday without his uncle here. How many other things will he miss?"

"Sure, I'd like a nice shade of pink, can we add sparkles too or is that asking too much?" Mike snorted sarcastically. "You forget who you are talking to, I've seen, heard and smelled you feel things for people that weren't contempt, at least to a chosen few people. But no, we don't have to discuss anything unless you want to. If you do, you know where to find me."

"On the other side of a now very crowded bed. And not the good kind of crowded either." He joked, placing his hand on Robert's thigh.

"I know what you mean," he said with a sigh. "I love them both but I wonder if this is what's best for them. How fucked up are they going to be after growing up like this?" He took another swig of the beer. "I guess there is no use in questioning it though. What's done is done, and we're here and so are they. All we can do now is protect them the best we can." While hoping their best was good enough.

"You can match with Isabella. I'm sure Savannah has the right shade if you ask. She's always so ready to share," he said with a grin. "I'm telling you that there's no room for anything, Mike. I love my brother, but I can't worry about him. I have to trust that he'll be all right, because I have things that need to be done to make sure we do get him."

Robert smiled down at Liam. "You and Isabella could move to another room," he teased. "Nu te las să pleci, scumpul meu." He looked up at Mike. "They can't be more fucked up than we are, but they'll be better trained; that's for sure. They speak more languages, or at least recognize them. I know Liam can understand them, and if we end up somewhere with a different language, they are more likely to understand than some of the adults. They will grow with their powers. They will know military strategy. We just have to keep them alive until they can kick ass on their own."

"Okay," Mike said. "I won't bring it up again."

"After what Reese said out there today? He'd have both our heads if we tried," he said with a grin. "I hope you're right," Mike said. "Too bad we can't teach them to kick ass yet," he added. He knew he'd do whatever he could to protect both children. He'd die rather than let anything happen to either child.

"Oh no, please do. I'd love to see you and Isabella wearing matching nail polish," he answered with a smirk.

"See, this is what I never got it. From the start. People give orders, other people bitch. How the fuck would they know what we do in our house? The point isn't to follow the rules, but not to get caught when you break them." He might have been a Colonel, but he was a pilot first. They broke every rule possible while on the ground and once he had been promoted, he told his men that their fault was getting caught.

"I'm always right. We established that over a year ago." He looked at Mike. "Savannah has started training. Not exactly with the kicking ass, but playing hide and seek. If we can get Liam to understand to teleport with Isabella, we might just be ahead of the game."

"I'm almost tempted to just to shut you up," Mike chuckled, though they both knew that wasn't what he'd promised to shut up about.

"They might not, but if they're telling us to sleep together there is a reason behind it," he said. "Getting caught might get us in trouble with Reese, not doing it might get us in a much stickier situation." He smiled. "And crowded or not, I'm fairly used to you in the bed by now." How that had came about was still sort of a mystery. This wasn't what he'd bargained for when they'd decided to start fucking.

"Now that's an idea," he said. "If we can do that they've definitely got an advantage. I suppose we should find a way to start practicing Isabella's abilities to change size too. It could come in handy. The problem would be to get her to understand when to do it and when not to."
