Where: The Club
When: Saturday, March 17, 2012
Summary: There's more to the holiday than green beer. There's good music, too.
Irish music was not a usual choice for guys like Sean. He knew this. But, Sean loved the excuse of playing an evening of Irish music. Sure, you had mournful Irish aires sung by women with ethereal voices. But, the heart of Irish music, Irish culture, was the ceilidh music, pub music. Whiskey plus music and you had a party.
And there was so much instrumental music to showcase the talent of his band! Reels, jigs, hornpipes. They didn't have the right instrumentation. But, they could fake it. They had the fiddle in Alexis. The guitars and drums were versatile, though you couldn't really fake a bodhran with a kit, and the keyboard could be set to sound almost like an accordion. The finishing touch was the penny whistle. It was a widely used instrument in Irish music and, luckily for Sean, sold in almost every toy store in America as a 'toy flute' because people were dumb and thought anything that looked that deceptively simple had to be for children.
Sean was including short instrumental only sets between the vocal sets this week to give the players something to really jam with. They had arrangements of everything from Morrison's Jig and Paddy Cronin's Reel to The Titanic Set and Whollop The Cat.
And the vocal sets were even more varied. From the tradition tunes like Mairi's Wedding and Whiskey in the Jar to more modern folk rock like Johnny Tarr and Johnny Jump Up. Emily did a set of Sinead O'Connor and Dolores O'Reardon, including God Be With You and the Cranberries' Zombie. G and Rob provided U2 songs. Sean, of course, had a very eclectic set that included traditional, rock, and the parody songs A Fairy Story and The Farmer.
Besides the music, there was the usual food and drink, dancing...Nell's laughing attempt at a clumsy step dance included. It was just a fun night for partying with friends and colleagues.
