RP: Peter and Neal
Who: Peter Burke and Neal Caffrey
Where: New York
When: 8 November 2010
Summary: Neal is definitely up to something

Things had been tenuous at best since everything had come to a head with Fowler and then things had gone so wrong with Mozzie, it had left things even more tense than usual. It had taken some finagling to keep Caffrey out of jail for a second time - if he'd gone back this time Peter was pretty sure he wouldn't have been able to get him out again, tracker or not. So he'd gotten creative, and with the help of Jones and Diana, they managed it.

Of course that just meant Peter got to dole out punishment as he saw fit since Neal escaped any other sort of retribution for that little stunt. Peter had shortened his leash, giving Peter a one mile radius, and kept Neal on paperwork duty for the most part, only bringing him in on cases when there was no other choice.

Today was one of those days when there was no other choice, they needed Neal's connections and Peter wanted to end this case sooner than later - so it meant bringing Neal on board.

"Look this is important, don't go screwing around, and don't make any stupid mistakes." He was going over last minute details with Neal as they headed out, the elevator taking them down, things had been getting good before - they were working on becoming partners, real partners and not just an FBI agent and his consultant, and then Fowler had shown up again and it was like starting over again - though with a lot more added baggage. Elizabeth had heard him vent about it often enough, and she'd made suggestions too as she always did, but things were still tense. And Peter was having a hard time finding that line between special agent and friend.

The carriage finally stopped and the doors slid open, and Peter continued his briefing on the case, reminding Neal again of things he knew well enough all ready, it was only when they were outside that Peter started catching on to the fact that something was wrong here, something was different but he couldn't put a finger on it. "Caffrey, whatever you're doing, whatever you're planning, stop it now." Peter warned him, that had to be it - he really was too intuned to Caffrey these days, he spent too much time with the man.

Leon raised an eyebrow. "No, the definition of fun does not include many of the activities that your counterpart seems involved in. How exactly did you end up working for the FBI? Especially with-" He reached into his pocket and brought out the ankle bracelet. "This."

He put it on the table and looked at Burke. "That's useless here. You also won't be able to return. Scientists have been working on it, but there's no guarantee that it will ever happen. You are, as you were, employed by the government of the United States. We have rooms for you. You will receive a salary. You will learn about this new reality, the new agencies, weapons. You will discover what your powers are and how to use them."

Leon smiled at Caffrey. "You will not escape, because people that try are never to be seen again, and I get the impression that civil liberties of people from other reality are not on the top of the list of this administration. You will have my protection as long as you're working for me, but I have no control out there. There are no Miranda rights here and their anti-terrorist laws make the Patriot Act look like child's play."

"The short version was that I could recognise a security fibre for the new Canadian $100 bill and his team of Harvard graduates couldn't," Neal replied. "I'm a consultant, I help out when his cases touch my areas of expertise."

"My tracker doesn't work?" Neal deliberately didn't look at the man next to him, knowing Peter probably wouldn't approve of that development at all. "So I'm here of my own free will technically? And if I don't comply then I... Disappear?"

He asked the question that had been nagging at him and his eyes flickered to Peter's briefly. "If there's another version of ourselves - now in our world obviously - then versions of our friends and family... They're here too, right?"

Despite the look that Neal gave him, and despite the very rational tone of Vance as he gave them all the details of what had happened and this new reality Peter still didn't quiet buy it - but it wouldn't really do a whole lot of good to go around in circles trying to prove who was right and who was wrong - and there was the question of the towers.

"That is the cliff notes version." Peter said shaking his head when Neal explained how they had come to be working together.

Peter pinched the bridge of his nose when Neal latched on to the idea that his tracker didn't work. "Do you have something similar? Caffrey usually needs a reminder of what's best for him and a tracker can occasionally go a long way to help toward that." He shook his head when Neal continued asking about friends and family. "Neal, do not do this." He warned him.

"What do you mean there are no guarantees we can go back? I have a wife, a dog, I can't just stay here and join whatever this is." That was Peter's real concern, fake realities or not, he needed to get back to El. He didn't care about powers, or whatever had brought them here, just getting back to El.

"Not anymore. You will have a lot of studying to do do that you can learn about the masterpieces of this time. I'm sure a few trips to the museums can be arranged." He didn't even want to think who Hetty would sent in the name of forging a new team. "You will also become a federal employee." It would be easier to protect him if something goes wrong.

"What is happening is a secret to the majority of this world. We have no idea what would happen if it came out. Cover stories are being created to explain your disappearance." He leaned against the table, fingers crossed together.

"Your very existence is a threat to national security. Disclosing anything that doesn't go with the covers story makes you an enemy combatant. White Collar unit might not deal with those so I will explain. Being an enemy combatant means that you have no rights, and the few you have tend to be forgotten. You will learn all there is to know about your omega version, but you will not make contact unless authorized. If you disobey, your future is out of my hands. Is that clear?" he asked, before turning to Peter. "We will try and find something, however, it will be hard to explain why he shouldn't be thrown in Guantanamo the first time he violates whatever restrictions we put on."

Leon tried not to think about that part, but sooner or later someone would ask, and it seemed that day. "I have a wife and two children, agent Burke. I know full well how this feels, but there is no way at the moment to return back to our reality. We are stranded here for the time being."

Neal gave Peter a look when he started talking about what was best for him. It had been made abundantly clear throughout the last year that obsessing about Kate hadn't been good for him, threatening to kill Fowler less so, but he hadn't paid any attention to either. And really, the tracker wasn't going to stop him if he actually wanted to run.

"I get to go to museums?" Neal's eyes gleamed slightly but otherwise his face remained disinterested. "Accompanied or not? Seeing as I'll be a federal employee and not just out on work release," he added with a smile.

"Peter, I'm hurt. It's like you don't trust me at all. Guantanamo is threat enough as it is," Neal pushed his fingers through his hair and looked back at Vance, not sure if there was anything else to go through. "So do we get to be shown around?"

Peter remained unaffected by the look Neal cast his way, when Neal stopped acting like a child then Peter would stop treating him like one - and Peter could tell Neal had some very stupid ideas running through his head right now, and none of them would turn out well.

"Accompanied." Peter answered for Vance, they might both be federal employees, but he was the one who knew Neal, and he was responsible for him, in any reality. This was going to be a nightmare. "I know you, Caffrey, there is a difference." And a life in prison hadn't been enough to keep Neal in line, why exactly would the threat of Guantanamo?

Peter wanted to punch something, what was he supposed to do here? What was El supposed to do at home? Just come to terms with the idea that her husband had simply disappeared? "Do you know what is happening with our counterparts?" Surely they wouldn't be sent home to live the lives of the people's places they were taking.

"I wouldn't say accompanied, but joined. You are not the only person that needs to catch up and Hetty, who's my deputy, enjoys them very much." There was no need to add that Hetty would do whatever was best for the team.

"As far as I know, our government is isolating them. My guess is that there will be cover stories for them as well, but I know as much as you do. Trust me, agent Burke; I want to go home as much as everyone else, but until we know how, we need to deal with our current reality."

He stood up. "Come on, let's get you to your rooms, and you can start studying. We'll have plenty of time to talk."
