RP: The Funeral
Who: Everyone
Where: 1 Marshall Drive
When: October 19, 2011
Summary: It's a funeral and a meeting at the same time

Leon hated funerals of his men. It was a personal failure. Funerals here were both better and worse. Better because there was no greiving family, but worse, because they were doubly responsible for all the people here. No one here had chosen this, no one had consciously and voluntarily accepted the danger. Despite everything, it was impressive to see how smoothly things went, each person knowing what needed to be done, from the pall bearer to Kepner and everyone in between. Slowly they were becoming a team, whether people saw it or not.

When they were finally at the team recreation house, Leon made sure that they were all there and that the building was secure, before getting everyone's attention. "I apologize for having to do this under the circumstances, but this is the best cover we have." People would have to get used to the fact that everything in their lives was a cover. "Some of you may be aware all ready of the fact that we have three pregnant women in this agency. This has brought up several issues. Ladies and gentlemen, everything you've learned about safe sex just went out the window. Pills and condoms don't seem to work. Whether STDs can be transmitted is up in the air, but I'd assume that if you can get pregnant, you can probably catch something... if we're even able to catch regular illnesses. The point is that we have no idea, so please be very careful unless you want a child.

"The second issue is security. We will keep this secret as long as possible, but mothers-to-be have a glow that will be impossible to hide forever." They also had a huge belly, swollen ankles and mood swings that made war preferable, but that wasn't up to him to mention. "When this comes out, the risks increase. I am confident that everyone here understands what that means and that measures have been taken for temporary shelter. However, we need to start looking at more long term solutions, covers that would allow us to interate with the people of this world. We have to be able to become invisible in plain sight. We will need names that you can live with for the rest of your life, nothing connected to any name you've ever used before. Also we'll be looking at different parts of the country, possibly near cities we know, New York, Miami, LA, Chicago." It was the opposite of what he wanted, but if anyone got capture, Leon wanted the extra time to relocate everyone. "However if you have ideas, speak privately with either Callen or Morgan. Now if there are any questions, I'll be happy to answer what I can."

Eliot spoke up from where he stood, leaning against one of the walls in the room where he could see everyone's skeleton (minus Hanna's), "Do you want to hold onto the ICIS agency as a local whole as long as possible?"

"As long as we have the President's support, we are a federal agency and each of us has taken an oath to uphold the laws of this country." Despite everything, Leon was a patriot and if he could work with this government, then he would.

"There are also very practical matters. We have three pregnant women, and I wouldn't want to start a war with the government when they are about to give birth. Staying here also gives access to technology, arms and information that we wouldn't otherwise," he said. "Now, if your question is whether people could start going, then the answer is most certainly not. The moment anyone quits, he becomes an enemy of the state and it becomes our job to find, apprehend or kill such person. Failure to do so makes all traitors."

"What about extended assignments?" Eliot was trying to think this through. They buried a kid today. There was no way that would be happening again. "How does that work within the federal framework, or whatever Hanna called it the other day?" Eliot didn't know where Hanna was, but the man would probably speak up for clarification if need be.

"OSP is currently looking at cases to determine if there's anyone that has escaped notice that might lead to long term ops out of New York, but until we have a reason, there are no long term ops." He'd love if he could sent Callen and Sam away to find them the perfect spot, at least if Sam returned to his natural state.

"We need to justify missions and ops, just like every other agency," he added.

Savannah decided that the rest could talk about things while she went to G and put an arm around his, which was probably the only thing that stopped her from jumping up and down, brain already in overdrive, because planning was what she did best and she had so many ideas already.

"We're not going anywhere near those cities, are we? No, we're not, because that's insane, so where are we going? Because you know we can really help, and by we, I mean me, because I have a vested interest, and I can plan, and somewhere warm would be nice, where there aren't so many people that bother you." She grinned. "I like Tennessee, but Texas is nice I hear, people are friendly, don't like the government too much, but then we wouldn't be agents, would we, just regular folks trying to make a living without interference from all those fat politicians who don't care about no regular people, but their own pockets," she said, copying her mother's accent.

Somehow, G wasn't surprised at all when Savannah made her way straight for him as soon as the Director stopped speaking.

"We don't know yet. We'll have to see what we can find." They would have safehouses near those cities and others...as they were able to find and set them up, of course. But, a more permanent settlement such as the Director had described would have different requirements. He chuckled at the imitation accent. "Texas might be an option. The Southwest, Midwest, those are the most likely areas we'd be looking at, I think. Lots of land, few questions. We avoid looking like a cult or a militia group."

"We don't know where we're going, but we're not going in any of the cities he mentioned," she repeated for clarification. "I'm not sure what's worse: that you guys are so paranoid that won't even say the truth here, or that I know you enough to know that you'd be lie to us, or that I actually understand why he did it," she said with a shiver, because that was really the biggest problem.

"So no New York? I'm sure you're crying about that one," she teased. "No cults or groups so we avoid FBI attention, right? See? Not all the classes were completely boring, just the ones with a lot of physics in it." She looked around an sighed. "You know you'll have a problem explaining why such varied group, especially with a black man and a woman of Hetty's height in charge. Good places to hide, but they also have their own rules. People don't mix like this and if they do, people looking like you are very much in charge, or maybe even older. If this requires a cover story, that will need a bigger one to make us fit and get the locals to trust us enough not to send the government our way should they get close."

G gave her a tight smile. "Something like that." Savannah had come a long way from the girl he'd met eleven months earlier. Then, he'd despaired of ever making her understand why they did things. Now, a part of him wished she didn't.

"I'm heartbroken, really." New York was fine to visit. But, even under these circumstances, G wouldn't be sorry to put it on the other side of the Rockies from him. "I do know those things," he assured her, huffing softly at the thought. The places that were most suited to hiding were also the places least likely to condone the sort of mixing they had in this group. Hell, there were still places out west where black people, gay people, or 'foreigners' of any sort were escorted through town at rifle point and invited never to return. "And we may have to pretend even more that things aren't what they are. When we find a way to scout locations, I may have to take Deeks and Robert with me instead of Sam or Morgan. We may have to pretend that I'm in charge when I'm really communicating with Vance and Hetty and Morgan. We'll fit the story to the place and hope people here can learn it. There really isn't going to be much other choice when we have to run."

Eliot thought for a bit before calling out to Morgan. In a room of this many people, he'd never find the man otherwise. It was one of the things that really sucked about being blind.

"Safe houses," Eliot began. "Vance said some have been established but do you need more? Or want something where a small to mid-sized group to go for this day to day thing off the map?"

Derek approached the man, surprised that he'd be the one to get so involved, but he would only encourage such an inclusion.

"We have temporary ones. The Jersey one is the one you know about, but we have another near LA," he said. "I'm not sure how to have safe houses for day to day activities when we don't even know where we're going at this point. And as the Director said, if you have any ideas for long term places, I'm all ears. We're talking somewhere where we can all live, a commune of some type."

"You want a ranch," Eliot said, resting his hand lightly on the top of his cane. "Horse ranch or cattle ranch. Best places are in northern Wyoming or southern Montana outside of Yellowstone, for the terrain variance. If you search, you can find a thousand acres or so for about six or seven hundred grand, or even bigger for around a million. Horses are better as there's no need for off-loading, especially if you get a wilder breed like mustangs."

Eliot wondered if his Omega counterpart had the money stashes like he did. He wondered if Parker's did, too. "With a ranch, no one questions guns or the number of people there. If you have a big enough ranch, you can even put a landing strip in that wouldn't be questioned. Towns are spread far, but depending on where you pick you can be within a few driving hours or so of the major cities."

Derek wasn't sure if a ranch was what he wanted, or being anywhere near any of the states that the Director seemed to favor. It reminded him of the discussion with Tim, discussing how one should stand up for his right to be different, and now, he would have to embrace the isolationistic, prejudiced, anti-government views to protect himself.

"I'd like a five star hotel, but I'm told that it's not a good place to hie," he said joking. "That's a good suggestion. I'll bring it up to Callen. Do you know the area down there?"

Parker didn't like this, the funeral or any of it. This was why you didn't get close to people, why you didn't form connections or any of that. And yet she didn't want to give up those connections she had formed here or back home.

When Eliot caught her attention, Parker made her way over to him and frowned considering his question. "Yes." She said finally, she knew herself and from what she'd heard about her self in this universe she decided she would definitely have safe houses and stores of equipment and things. "I think they would."

Parker nodded, the two of them had always been able to take care of themselves, that had never been a question. They could disappear if they wanted and have survived just fine here. But the others - that was why Parker had stayed in the first place.

"Do you think we could find any of the stashes we might have here?" She wondered. She nodded, "We won't." They couldn't be there for all of them, things like what happened to Nate and Peter, they weren't things they could control but Parker didn't want anyone else to get hurt if they could help it.

When she thought that things couldn't get any worse, they just did. They were at a funeral, Nate's funeral, the boy she's watched die, and they were talking about plans and strategies and she wanted to go home and cuddle up with her dad, and she didn't even care that she was supposed to be an adult starting college. If that weren't enough, now they could get pregnant even if they were safe.

She had nothing to add to the conversation and moved away from the main group, going to the one person she knew that wouldn't want to get involved. "Hey," she said, putting her arms around him in a loose hug. "Can you believe this?"

Only these people could use a funeral as an opportunity to talk about these sorts of things. Bad enough that Nate had gotten killed in the first place, now they had to take over his funeral and turn it into some sort of planning session. Like they couldn't do it any any time.

He sighed and was relieved when Alex found her way from the main group as well, he wrapped his arms around her and shook his head. "It's a mess." He said, keeping her close even when they parted. "How are you holding up?" He asked her.

Alexis shrugged. "As much as I can be. I dreamed of him... more like a nightmare. He was running after me, not Nate, that man. You know, I haven't told the others, but in the dream, the guy turned a different color, his skin. I think that happened for real."

She looked at the others, considering the idea of telling them now, and then putting aside. "If all of this weren't enough, now we can get pregnant no matter what. How thrilling. Not that I'm ... you know... at the moment, but still it's kind of creepy."

Brian did not like this new information. Not about the pregnant women or the move, shit would happen and he would behave accordingly. That wasn't something that affected him one way or another. No, the other stuff did.

Condoms were supposed to work. It was the basic principle of a happy and promiscuous life. How was he supposed to fuck if he didn't know that he was safe? That more than anything before fucked with his life.

He put his hands on John's from behind and started leading John toward one of the empty rooms. "We've got a slight problem if condoms don't work. I've fucked... a lot of fucking people," he said, "and I know I don't care about much, but I don't make fun of people who're trying to come out and I don't put people in danger by not using a condom. I can be drunk, high, but I always use rubber, except I don't know if that is any good." And now he didn't know what the fuck he was supposed to do.

Re: Brian/John

John was occupied with considering all the places he'd hidden in with his mom when Brian took his hands. There'd been a few towns and places near what might be suitable areas. There was no way any of them were near those big cities, though. You wanted to live off the grid, you went where people didn't bat an eye at something as old fashioned as using cash. But, he followed where Brian led with curiosity.

He tactfully refrained from pointing out that Brian cared about more than he admitted and just had uncommon ways of showing it, choosing to focus instead on the actual issue. Not a small undertaking, given Brian's lifestyle. Before he said a word, John leaned up to kiss Brian lightly. "Breathe," he teased gently. "Let's take this apart logically. Working from the assumption condoms don't work, first priority is to make sure you're okay...preferably without having to risk blood tests and the like. As far as you know, you were clean before we got here, yes? So, it's a matter of determining whether everyone you've been with is too."

Alright, the chances of Brian remembering all of them were...well, John didn't really want to think about whether he'd been high enough or there'd been so many Brian couldn't remember them all. "Okay, the soldiers have to have regular medical exams that include blood tests. If I hack into the base hospital's records, we can see if anyone's results came back with problems and I can monitor further results as they get the tests done. The problems are going to be if you've slept with anyone else in ICIS."

Brian returned the kiss, but his mind was elsewhere. He still snorted when John told him to think things through logically. "Yes, I was clean before I came here, but that's pretty much where your little plan falls apart."

He pulled back. "How are you going to get the names? Post a message in the bulletin board at the mess? I don't remember who I had sex with, John. They were ... guys. Hot guys, young guys, straight guys, gay guys, but they were just guys. I don't ask names, and when they tell me, I remember for about ten minutes. I can tell you where I had sex and what I did, but the who? No fucking clue, but even if we get that, what about the clubs?"

He ran his fingers through his hair. "Do you know how long I've been here? Since the beginning of February, and I try to fuck at least a guy a day, do you know how many guys is that? Too fucking many." So many in the last month or two, here had been very few, but he was still fucking, just the same person. "ICIS? There was Nate, but I doubt you can ask him, and there was that one time with Callen-" He couldn't help but mentioning him, because despite how serious this was, he refused not to have some fun.

After leaving Savannah, G decided this was as good a time as any to have a quick discussion with April about security and research. He knew something was going to have to be done, but wasn't about to leave the security of his family -- and all three expectant mothers were family -- to anyone not named Callen or Hanna.

Making his way across the room, he smiled as he approached. "April, do you have a minute? There's a couple things about the Director's announcements that I'd like to discuss with you in particularly, if you have the time. If not, can you make some time to talk tomorrow?"

April's head was spinning. In truth it had been since Jenna had come to see her, and even more since Savannah had become pregnant too. The conclusions the director had come to about the efficiency of birth control were hers too, and that was scary enough even without everything else the Director added.

When G came up to her she wasn't too surprised. She gave him a small smile as he asked if she had time. "Of course I have time for you," she said. "Especially about important matters."

Nodding, G motioned toward a more private area where they could talk without everyone overhearing. This was his first step. He'd talk to the fathers over the weekend, give them time to absorb everything. Then he'd set about getting everyone up to speed on living the lie.

But, first, medical needs.

"I wanted to talk to you about supporting these pregnancies, first. Are you equipped to do so securely? From the Morgue. Without resources from the base hospital. Without keeping samples of anything, blood, tissue, nothing. We'll need to plan now for things like how to deal with the after birth, the remnants of umbilical cords, all of it. How secure are your files?" He wasn't going to pretend he didn't believe she kept any, despite his past insistence on not maintaining records. It was too ingrained in medical training. G would pick his battles. Secure them first, destroy them later. "Who did the encryptions, if you have them? Is there anything you do need that you don't have access to right now? It's even more important now that we don't put these children at risk."
