Nevan thought he understood the traditions around the American celebration of Thanksgiving. What he didn't get was how crazy into it they all seemed to get. It was like the whole place ground to a halt for a day, no matter how many thousands of miles away they were from the original land of the pilgrims or the turkeys or whatever. Still, he wasn't one to turn down a day off that happened every year, even so short a time after the half term. Really, he thought, they could have had the decency to make it a proper long weekend. Who'd go back to work on a Friday after a day off on a Thursday? If they tried that in Australia the place would riot. Somehow he'd managed to end up hosting a party for those who didn't have a big family table to sit around. Maybe he should have been more specific with his invitation. He couldn't help being a bit concerned that his apartment was going to get crashed by people he really didn't want around. On the other hand if that was going to happen maybe it was best that as many people as possible came who would defend the place if it got out of control. He begged the kitchen for some steak, kebabs and sausages which he set up next to the grill in the kitchen, and he had plenty of chips and snacks. As people started crowding in, sitting in piles around the TV which was not really big enough for major entertaining, he texted the late arrivals to ask them to bring more chairs. |
