RATING|STATUS: Awful | In progress
Although the last thing Birdy wanted to do was leave his newly pregnant wife alone while he took a vacation, he found himself in the administration building the morning of the first day of the post-midterm holidays picking up boarding passes for a plane. When Raz had asked him to take her and Eden away for a few days, he'd been torn. On the one hand, there was very little he wouldn't do for those girls, and he wanted to be able to take every opportunity to encourage Raz in the idea of family; he may not have been around when they were kids, but he was around now, and he sort of felt like he owed it to his sister to be there for them. Not that that was the only reason, of course. He genuinely loved them. It was no hardship to spend time with them. But on the other hand, Callie was at a very crucial part of her pregnancy. The next two months were uncertain, and they'd never made it out of the first trimester. Traveling wasn't a good idea for her, and she needed to be near a doctor at all times, so she couldn't go with them. But he didn't want to leave her. If something happened while he was gone... But Callie had reminded him that even if something happened and he was there, there probably wouldn't be much he could do anyway. That didn't exactly ease his anxiety, but he let her to talk him into it. Even still, he cheated and looked ahead several days--they'd made a pact that he wouldn't see ahead to the fate of the baby--just to make sure everything would be okay while he was gone. When he didn't see anything particularly troubling, he allowed himself to take a breath. After securing the boarding passes, he stopped for a drink of water and headed back to the house to finish last-minute packing (everything was last minute for Birdy) and give his wife a proper goodbye. He collapsed while folding a couple of shirts. ~ He was standing next to Callie, clasping her hand with both of his as she laid back in a chair and put her feet in the stirrups. She was grinning, but he could tell it was her nervous grin, usually reserved for very uncomfortable situations, but this time, he was very anxious along with her. It was Birth Day. "Eight centimeters, you're almost there Callie," the nurse between her knees told her. "It should be just a little while longer and then it'll be time to push." Callie nodded, breathing in and out through pursed lips. "You ready for this?" Birdy asked, smoothing her hair away from her forehead. Her grip on his hand convulsed suddenly as another contraction hit her, and when she nodded this time, it was a little too quickly. "Callie you're going to break my hand," he warned her, making a slight groan of pain as she gripped him too tightly. "When I get through this, I'm going to break more than your hand," she bit back. The nurse on the other side of the room stifled a laugh. "There's my warrior woman. At least this is the hardest part of the whole thing, huh?" "Yeah, lucky for you." "Yes ma'am, I'm very lucky." Another contraction gripped her and she cried out, her grip on his hand so tight he, too, made a pained noise. The nurse was back between her legs to check her progress. "Alright Callie, it's time," she told her, then called over a couple more nurses to help. "Time to push!" And she did, as hard as she could. Birdy stood next to her with her hand in his left and a wet towel at her forehead in his right, encouraging her and telling her he loved her, that their baby would be healthy and beautiful, all she had to do was this one thing and they could meet it. And then something happened. "Callie stop, stop pushing!" "Why, what happened?" he asked, voice bordering on panic. Stopping was not supposed to happen at this point. Callie screamed at the effort it took to fight her body's need to push the baby out. "The baby is breach and I think the cord is around its neck. We need to turn the baby and move the cord before you can push again." One nurse bolted out the door to get a doctor, the other jumped in to help with the baby, and Callie started crying while Birdy started freaking out. "What's going on? Is the baby okay?" But they didn't answer him, they only talked to each other in low tones as the put in his stomach grew and threatened to swallow him whole. A moment later, there was a sound of liquid pouring on the ground and the nurse finally held up his baby in her hands. His relief was instantaneous and tears sprang to his eyes before he realized the baby was the wrong color and it wasn't crying. "What-" "Birdy," Callie said, but her voice was faint, tired. He turned back to her and he knew something was wrong. Peaking around toward the front of her, he saw that the liquid he'd heard was hitting the floor was blood, and a lot of it. "Callie? Someone help!" |
