Callie was generally a proud woman. She saw herself as strong, confident and capable and while she'd had many people doubt her in her younger years, she liked to think that she had proven herself to be all of those things. She liked to think that she could handle anything that life tried to throw at her. And while she'd never seen herself as vain or overly concerned with her appearance, the mirror in her bedroom was threatening to undo her.
Perhaps it was because she'd always been athletic and muscular and never needed to concern herself with how her clothing fit because it always did. She was a beautiful woman with a strong, slim body and she hadn't known the struggle of not feeling comfortable in her own skin. That is, until now.
For the most part, she thought she was handling the pregnancy well. They'd made it out of the first trimester for the first time and she was feeling optimistic and downright hopeful that this would be it. That this was their baby and that she wouldn't have to go through the trauma of losing another child. She was feeling better in the sense that the awful morning sickness she'd been dealing with for the last three months had finally let up and she had an appetite back. Of course, that was what lead to the problem of the day.
She was standing in front of the full length mirror critically examining the small bump that had seemed to appear overnight that was giving the waist of her pants a bit of trouble. It hardly looked like a baby bump. Really, it just looked like she was bloated or getting lazy with her crunches. What had her on edge about it, was less that her pants weren't going to fit properly (maybe ever again), but for the first time she felt insecure with her appearance. She wasn't quite ready for the entire island to know her business and she knew it was going to be more and more difficult to keep under-wraps (literally, apparently). She also knew it was stupid to worry about how Birdy was going to react, but it was there in her hormone-adled mind that he might somehow find her less attractive or think this was a terrible mistake or whatever else might go through his mind when she was suddenly 30lbs heavier and unable to see her own feet.
