WHO: Artemis and Mallory
WHAT: Hunting and girl talk
WHERE: Mallory's, then the car, then hunting
WHEN: Last weekend
WARNINGS: None.
It had been a while since Artemis had spoken to her newest friend.. and possible relative. She was worried about her, and though she felt a strong connection to her, was also worried about getting herself hurt. It would be quite hard on her to lose yet another companion. The nymphs were hard enough to lose!
Today, however, she felt the need to speak with young Mallory. Picking up the phone, she dialed the number and awaited an answer.
In a way, Mallory looked forward to the day awhile down the road when she would be pregnant - just for the sheer fact that she'd get spoiled. However, she was not entirely enjoying being the one to do the spoiling. As much as she loved Dahlia, she still needed breaks here and there and stole away into her room before she could be located.
When the phone rang, Mallory fumbled to get the Blackberry out of her pocket, hoping all the while that she would not see that it was Dahlia. It wasn't. "Hello?"
"Mallory?" Artemis asked, a smile breaking out on her face. "It's Cadance!" She was pacing the foyer, ready to dart out if Mallory agreed to this trip.
"Oh, hi," she said with a sigh of relief and slumped down onto her bed. "What's up?"
"I was wondering if you were up to go on a little trip with me?" she asked, her voice full of hope and excitement. She was bouncing up and down.
Mallory quirked an eyebrow. Random trips never went so well. "What sort of trip," she asked, and her voice reflected the suspicion despite her effort not to. Oh well.
Cadance couldn't help but giggle. "A hunting trip, of course! It'll be fun!" she whined, pouting a bit. This didn't sound promising.
"Hunting trip? What sort of-" Mallory froze when she heard something off in some other part of the house, something could very well have been Dahlia. Let's see... hunting or giving her employer yet another foot massage? "Alright I'm in. When, where, and what am I wearing?"
Cadance laughed. "Now, if you can. And wear some jeans and a dark shirt, if you can. I will pick you up," she said, searching for the keys to her brand new car.
The brunette jumped off her bed, and hurried over to her dresser. "Right. I'll meet you outside." She said, flipped the phone shut, and began to dig through her drawers or something that fit Cadance's requirements. Black tank top? Check. Dark jeans loose and easy to move in? Check. Doc Martens? Check.
A grin in place, she ran out the door. Her supplies were already in the trunk - she was going to go hunting with or without a companion. It was just so much more fun with one! She had even brought extra supplies just in case. Her long blonde hair was pulled back into a ponytail as her black tank hugged her body. She had taken a crash course in driving and was still getting used to it, but she managed to find her way - slowly - to Mallory's.
By the time the newly-driving goddess had arrived, Mallory was standing close to the road with her newly purchased compound bow in a cloth case slung over her shoulder, hair tied back, and sunglasses. When Cadance pulled up, there was a look on her face screaming 'What the hell took you so long?', despite the welcoming smile.
After popping the trunk, Cadance stepped out of the car and headed to the back, a smile in place. "You can put that back here," she called, holding the trunk open as she waited for her friend to comply.
And she did so, slipping the long black case into the trunk, not stepping away until she was sure it was seated in there well. "So where are we headed?"
"You'll see," Cadance said with a smirk, shutting the trunk and climbing back into the driver's seat. She waited for Mallory to join her before putting the car into drive and heading toward the interstate. "How've you been?"
Oooh, she hated that answer.
"Fine. A bit tired usually, but fine." She admitted and thought to keep her mouth shut to keep from spouting forth the commentary about Cadance's rather hesistant driving. "You?"
Merging, a bit too slowly, with the highway traffic, Cadance shrugged as well. "Been learning to drive," she said, though that was rather obvious. "Why are you tired?"
"Work. Kinda sorta," Mallory replied, keeping her eye on the steering wheel. Don't panic. Don't grab the wheel or push her foot down on the gas so that they wouldn't be rear-ended either. "How long of a drive is this going to be?" She asked, maybe a little too eagerly.
Cadance bit her lip as she slowly pushed down on the gas pedal. It seemed everyone was flying past them, and she desperately wanted to keep up. "About half an hour," she said, shrugging her shoulders and both hands tightened on the steering wheel.
Thirty minutes of stressful driving. Great. She was so going to agrue her way into driving back to town. "Let's hope it's a quick half hour." Mallory muttered.
Cadance frowned. "Sorry if my driving is unpleasurable," she snapped, stamping on the gas pedal. The car lurched forward and she began swerving in and out of traffic in her irritation.
"Near-death experiences were certainly not on my to-do list when I last checked!" Mallory half snapped, half shrieked back as the car went just a bit too close to the one in front of them. "Just think you shoulda mastered normal roads before you attempted the highway."
Frowning, and near tears, Cadance cut across the lanes of traffic and took the next exit. She slowed considerably as they stayed on the service road, not saying anything at first. There weren't many other cars and she felt a bit more at ease here. "Better?" she said softly, the fight nearly leaving her voice.
Mallory let out a very long breath if relief, though she was still shaking. "Howabout this, I drive, you tell me where to go. That way no one freaks out or goes into a panic, kay?"
Although she had her pride, she knew Mallory was right. This sucked. She hated not being perfect at everything. She slowed the car onto the shoulder of the road, then put it into park. "Alright then," she said, unbuckling her seatbelt and climbing out of the car.
Glad that it wasn't going to be a whole ordeal to get herself behind the wheel, Mallory slipped out of the passenger side and into the driver's seat. Once they were both back in and they were ready to be off again, she glanced at Cadance. "Which way, captain?"
"Get back on the highway and keep going north," she directed, pointing out the windshield as she did. She snapped her buckled and sat back. "Be careful... this is a new car."
Mallory threw Cadance a look that very simply said what she did not, 'I have less chance of wrecking this car than you did', and turned her attention back to the road to get them going back in the right direction. Yes, Mallory as apparently able to out-drive her friend, but she had a feeling she would be out-arched very soon.
Cadance looked out the side window as they drove along, then turned back to Mallory. "So... did you talk to Dante?" she asked, rather curious now that she came to think about it.
"Yea, I did," Mallory replied after a moment, fighting a little bit of a shiver. Things has usually been a little weird in the Lot house, but that had been the weirdest by far.
"Did something go wrong?" Cadance asked, turning to fully face the driver, her brows knitting together into a frown.
The brunette shook her head a little. "Not so much wrong as in unexpected and a little weird."
"You want to tell me about it?" Cadance prodded. It was like trying to extract honey from a beehive.
Mallory glanced over at Cadance with a slight frown, then turned her attention back to the road. "Seems to think I'm an 'old soul' or reincarnation. Or whatever."
"How do you feel about that?" Cadance asked. She knew she was being pushy, but she couldn't seem to help herself. If her uncle felt that about Mallory, then was she far off as well?
"Don't know," she replied with a small shrug. How should one feel when someone tells them they're the reincarnation of some tragic Greek woman? "Not quite sure if I believe it, despite the coincidences."
"What kinds of coincidences? And did he say who you were the reincarnation of?" she asked, quite curious and a bit in-your-face about the entire thing.
"Eurydice." Mallory mumbled, and glanced over at Cadance again. "So am I still going, or looking for an exit?"
Cadance's eyes grew wide and she had to look away. So her intuition was dead on, after all. This had to be more than just coincidence. "Just a little further, then we're exiting for the Cedar Key Scrub State Reserve," she said quietly.
She was keeping her attention very much focused on the road, and missed the look on Cadance's face. Which was, afterall, a good thing. Mallory had been keeping her mind from dwelling on it for very long, which was surprisingly impressive considering the general oddity of it all. "Gotcha."
"Excuse me?" Cadance asked, her eyes darting to Mallory's face. Did she say 'gotcha'? How odd!
"Yea, gotcha," She said with a slightly confused look on her face. "You know, 'understood', 'aye, aye cap'n', that sort of thing?"
"Oh," Cadance said, turning slightly red. She was still trying to learn all of the vernacular for today's society. "Sorry."
Mallory shook her head. "You been hidin' under a rock the past several years, or what?" She said with a small grin. No, it wasn't meant to be mean, she was more or less teasing. More or less.
Oh, how little she knew how close to home that one hit! "Not under a rock, no," Cadance answered seriously. This was going to be one interesting hunting trip!
There was a smart remark she thought to make, but simply let it go just as the exit sign they were looking for came into view. About time. "So we're heading straight to the park?"
"Yes, unless there is something you need," Cadance began, her eyes moving back to start at the darker haired woman. This was all so strange, and she didn't exactly know how to say the things she wanted to say.
Mallory stayed silent for a moment, thinking, then shook her head. "Nope. Other than some sort of deep spiritual epiphany, I think I'm good."
Cadance couldn't help but laugh. "A spiritual epiphany, huh?" she asked, shaking her head. "You should just accept what Dante said."
Mallory scoffed. "Yea? Like it's that easy. Come on now, you gotta admit that being told that you're some sort of incarnation of a Greek tragedienne is a little hard to handle. Not to mention that it doesn't exactly make my future look all that bright."
She shrugged. "I suppose it's not easy to accept. But does it make any sense at all? I mean, think about it..." the blonde said, wanting to help Mallory see who she truly was.
"Yea, there's a few odd similarities and coincidences," she said with a shrug and continued to follow the signs leading to their destination. "Doesn't mean that has to do with anything. It's the dreams and nightmares I keep getting stuck on. But still, it's just... too weird."
"Maybe not so weird. I mean, some people think the Greek gods live among us still," she said with a shrug that looked nonchalant... but wasn't. After all, she was a goddess herself.
Mallory glanced over at Artemis with a frown. "A lot of people think a lot of gods are around, or one, or whatever," she said with a long sigh as she saw the entrance sign to the park. "It's a matter of belief and perspective, not fact."
"I disagree. What if someone proved to you that there were gods living among us?" she asked, also spotting the entrance.
"I'm not quite sure what I'd do," she admitted after a short moment of contemplation, leaning forward to try to follow the signs for the parking lot and figure out which arrow was pointing which way.
"Well..." Cadance said, taking a deep breath. "What if I proved it today?"
Mallory blinked, and quickly diverted her attention as she found a spot to park. "And how the hell do you plan on doing that?"
"I'll show you that I am a god who lives among mortals," Cadance replied, a smile playing at her lips.
SUMMARY: Mallory is confused about how she could possibly be Eurydice. Artemis discusses it with her, then proves she is a goddess herself on their hunting trip (not scened, as we felt it would take forever!).
