Who: Adam & Shiri
What: Her “Birthday”
Where: On the Road to Disney World
When: Backdated a little. October 2, 2010
Warnings: none
The day before, Adam had given Shiri some honey sticks and promised her an actual birthday gift the next day. Small things were more of the theme for the Friday, despite a grander plan for Saturday.
He'd packed up the convertible for them both, with a lunch with some favorite treats resting in the back seat. He knew her dislike of being in cars, and hoped the open top would make it better. Then again, there was also the gamble with the weather, but he'd tend to that as he needed to.
They were out of Miami and a distance on their trip when Adam pulled off the state highway, and into a small town. He had something in mind, and calmly followed the main street, and parked before an old shop. Getting out of the car, he stretched tall and looked to his girlfriend. "How are you doing?"
Shiri had levels of car comfort. They went from “Ah, a convertible. I can manage this” to “At least a convertible does not feel like a coffin on wheels that I am strapped in to” to “Why am I in this terrible thing that I cannot stop?” until finally “Let me out.” When Adam had pulled over she was somewhere between the last two, trembling in her seat and clutching at her seatbelt.
But then the terrible thing stopped! It had stopped!
Her pink eyes opened wide and looked around. It had stopped and Adam was outside of it even! All the tension fled her system and the trembling instantly ceased, “Good now.”
Adam smirked a bit. He hadn't realized how close she was to needing the break, but clearly it was well enough timed. Walking around the car, he stepped next to her and kissed her forehead, wrapping an arm about her waist. "Should we walk around for a bit then? It looks like there's a few shops."
Shiri was out of the car before he could even finish his sentence. Walking meant not being in that terrible thing... no matter how cute it looked with the roof down. No, she knew it was all a trick. A trick to deceive. Giving the convertible a knowing look, she turned her attention back to Adam and used the arm around her waist as an excuse to draw close, “Yes. I mean... you are supposed to take breaks when you drive, right?”
He chuckled. They both knew the break was more for her than him, but she didn't yet know how much more. "Sure." Adam turned and glanced around at the shops, than chose a direction to head in. "Maybe we'll find something to buy," he offered.
“Maybe...” Shiri giggled as her hand slipped down his arm to take his and began to lead and explore like she had been here before. She hadn't, but that certainly wasn' t stopping her in her curiosity and her childish desire to get away from the car. “I like when we find things to buy.” Mostly because she knew those things were mostly for her.
Especially today. Adam let her lead as she wanted, accepting her hand in his. He eyed some of the shops, but didn't seem to find anything of immediate interest. "Maybe we can find something fun for the rest of the car ride," he offered. "Or a snack before we go on."
“There is nothing that will make the rest of the car ride fun...” she said in near sing-song as she looked all around. Perhaps a lot of drugs would make the rest of the car ride fun but she really doubted Adam would be buying those for her or that they would find a stand for them. She giggled as she passed by a little folk art stand with miniature marionette hanging from one of the shelves. They looked to be walking more toward folk art and vintage and that only seemed to make her more curious in her searching. For what? Even she didn't know.
Seeming to understand her dislike for the car, even with an open top, Adam bent to kiss her temple and gave her hand a squeeze. He'd make up the car ride to her, he knew he would. She would just need to wait a little longer...
Coming before one of the market stalls that seemed to almost have the town grown around it, Adam slowed his steps and peered at some of the things that were out. With a slight tug, he indicated his curiosity about it. "Let's look in here."
It would have been a fine car ride if it wasn't so long... But at least with the stop she would return to the beginning of her car tolerance levels. With a nod and a giggle, Shiri squeezed his hand and followed his lead now. “Did something catch your eye, my knight?”
He shrugged. "Maybe." But he knew something had. It was, in fact, the whole reason he'd taken the exit he'd taken. Leading her into the space, he guided his way to one of the walls. There, some displaced and some carefully folded, were hand made scarves. He stepped to the side to let Shiri come forward and take her own look.
She did come forward. She was good at following lead but when she caught sight of what she had been lead to, she paused... froze even as her eyes widened. Then there was a beat before she giggled and clapped her hands, releasing his completely to do so and walked passed him to the wall and its display. Carefully, trying not to upset the owner, she ran her fingers her along their soft fabrics and hand done detail.
Adam smiled at her reaction, stepping out of the way and sticking his hands in his pockets as she looked over the work. It was supposed to be traditional, and possibly some of the pieces rather old. A friend had told him about the spot, and now he was enjoying sharing it with Shiri. Soon he'd point out that if she chose one, he'd buy it for her as a birthday gift, but for now, he stood and let her enjoy.
She had found one in particular that she didn't wish to draw away from. She was certain that it was a true antique... having lived through the centuries, she believed she could tell the difference between the skill of yesteryear, and the fabrics, and modern recreations...
Shiri glanced over her shoulder at Adam then, “You took that exit on purpose.”
He nodded. "I did." He broke into a grin and came to stand behind her looking over her shoulder at the piece she was holding. It was beautifully done, even he could tell that, but he suspected he'd think the same about a number of them. "Happy Birthday."
Her fingers never leaving the scarf she had chosen in the subtle, but traditional, gesture of claiming it just in case someone else came by to look around as well, she leaned back against him and kissed his cheek, “You are so mean, being good at birthdays. Now what am I supposed to do when yours comes?”
What was she supposed to do? He arched his eyebrows at her. When had he ever expected anything much for his birthday? "You've done well enough so far," he reminded. "I don't expect anything fancy." Adam shrugged slightly, and easily wrapped his arms around her. "Is that the one you want?"
Nothing fancy? Done well enough so far? There was a momentary loss of smile as her mind easily flashed back to the last birthdays with him... They were so needlessly complicated and fancy. But her smile was quick to return as she nodded, “Yes. Do I just tug it out or do I have to ask the owner? Do you know?”
He caught the brief fade of her smile and kissed her lips before giving an answer. They may have been complicated at times in the past, but his point was they didn't need to be. And she didn't have a bar to have to pull him out of this year. "I don't know. I can ask to be sure though."
A light blush immediately graced her pale cheeks at the kiss and when the brief kiss broke, Shiri couldn't help but hide her face against his shoulder. So not fair. He was good at birthdays and not letting her frown! “I want this scarf,” she murmured into his chest, “Please...”
"Alright." Releasing her, he went over to the store owner, and quickly explained that they wanted one of the scarfs, but weren't sure how to get the one they wanted.
The woman nodded and came forward, smiling, with Adam following behind. She took the scarf that Shiri was holding, and eased it free from the others, then presented it to her. "Is that everything?"
Adam raised his eyebrows to his girlfriend. It was her birthday, and he'd already promised to get her the scarf, but if there was something else she'd seen... Well, now was the time to speak.
Why did he tempt her? Why did he forget the concept of money was so easily ignored for her? But Shiri smiled at her tempting boyfriend... he was the piratical one out of the two of them and he was willing to let her splurge, she was no fool to not take him up on on it. She motioned to another two and the woman happily gathered them as well. Only then did Shiri take the few steps to regain her contact with Adam and whisper in his ear on tip toe, “To think you like playing my hair how you oblige my desire to cover it.”
He kissed the tip of her nose, and rested his hands on her hips as he smiled down at her. "I also like seeing you happy. I thought that you'd like something unique, and that this would be a good way to see you happy." He didn't add the minor though that such a treat might also make her trip in the car again a little easier. That was more of a dream than anything else.
She looped her arms around him, leaning against his body with her own as she returned to be on tip toes to stare him directly in the eyes. She could feel his heart beating, whether it was feeling it through his chest or where her arms brushed against his throat she didn't know but she could feel it all the same. For a long moment, she remained there, silent – enjoying the feel of him so close, the beating of his heart and staring into his eyes before placing a soft kiss to his lips and returned to the flats of her feet, “You really are too good at this.”
Adam laughed, then kissed her forehead. "I'm glad you're enjoying it." Wrapping his arms around her more securely, he briefly lifted her around her waist and up to his eye level, gave her a kiss and set her back down. There wasn't really much space on the place. "Should we buy your scarves and go then?"
Shiri nodded, trying to hold back the mischievous grin that wished to grace her features. She really, really tried but yes.... she did want him to buy those scarves and go... Whether he knew what she was nodding to and where she wished to go was not her concern.
'
"Alright." He kissed the top of her head and took her free hand. The sales woman must have heard, and walked back over to the register as Adam led Shiri to pay for the items. Quickly the transaction was made, and the woman asked Shiri if she wanted them in a bag, wrapped in tissue paper, or not.
Shiri simply had them put into the bag. They weren't breakable items, she wasn't unwrapping them – tissue paper became silly. Besides, it would take longer. Instead, she waited patiently for the saleswoman to place them in the bag and hand them to her... then the muse turned to her boyfriend, her mischievous grin no longer hidden. “We can go now.... But only if you catch me.” And then she was off.
There was a moment of brief surprise on Adam's face, before he took off after her, as quickly as he could while still being careful within the shop. Once he was clear of all of that though, he was ready to move more quickly, and chase after his mischievous girlfriend.
Summary: Adam is taking Shiri to Disney World for her birthday but takes an exit to a little road side destination for a further birthday surprise for her (and to give her a break from driving in the car).
