Who: Hades & Persephone
What: Reprieve over, back to depression
Where: The Little-Lot House
When: Backdated. Technically Tuesday 4/6/2010. Not long after this scene
Warnings: none
Hades could feel sleep coming from him. He couldn't keep running from unconsciousness forever and he knew it would be a long sleep. He knew because he remembered waking up on Thanatos' couch so many months ago after hours of unconsciousness. Mel and Hera had been put in the same room. He couldn't hold vigil anymore; he would just have to trust Mel could.. everything should work out as long as they remained under the same roof...
He knew many things, like he should take a shower to stop smelling like sulfur, mint and fresh soil but he also knew he didn't trust standing for that long. He plopped down face down on the bed....
Persephone recognized the odor of sulfur hanging in the air that suggested Hades was home. There had been some commotion and she had seen Hera and Melpomene in the house. Which was strange. Didn't he keep her away for some reason? She didn't ask these things. She would have to ask about this thing though--if the women were in the house, she had to play woman of the house didn't she? It was unfortunate because Hades looked like he was falling asleep.
She knocked on the door frame.
Hades turned at the sound. Persephone. He rolled over to his back and reached out to her.
Persephone moved towards the bed, sitting down. She ran her fingers through his hair. "Rough day?" He hadn't even put a disguise back on.
He wasn't sure he could just yet even if he had thought to. “[You can say that...]” It was an understatement but understatements were still true. But taking a deep breath, he tried to relax into her touch as her fingers moved through his dark curls. “[We have company. Did you see the company? They're not allowed to leave...]”
"[Ah. Good thing you told me...]" Because she had seen the company. Persephone would have to take notes on the rules if there were going to be rules.
Those were all the rules so she was safe. He reached up to her, letting his warm but ever cooling fingers trail lightly along her cheek before he shifted his attention away to look out the window. The lush curtains didn't hide the fact that it was night He should have noticed that when he had returned to the house with his company but he hadn't. “[I don't know how long I'm going to sleep when I eventually pass out, Love... ]” Then, as a sudden thought crossed his mind he snapped his eyes back to her, “[How am I going to explain that I could bring her back and not him?]”
"[With the truth,]" Persephone said softly. "[His soul isn't anywhere. And even if you could get it from the new child, it wouldn't be his anymore. It wouldn't be Dad anymore.]"
Hades shifted again and curled around her side. When last he resurrected the dead, Thanatos blanketed him with wealth to help him recover from the exertion and from the attacks during the attempt, but he enjoyed being close to her much more. Wealth offered strength, but his former wife offered that and comfort, “[... She killed herself...]”
"[Which is impressive,]" Persephone stated. "[But nonetheless she'll move on.]" Or maybe she wouldn't, but well, if Hera wanted to have a permanent moment of weakness that was her decision. She would be surprised if, when all was said and done and more time had passed, that Hera would truly decide she had no future without Zeus. It seemed out of character for the icy woman.
With a heavy sigh, Hades closed his eyes and let her words ease some of his own anxiety and discomfort away. Resurrecting and then holding Hera afterwards had easily shifted his normally pessimistic mind even further but hearing it from Persephone let him begin to push beyond that back to reality and possibilities. Hera's despair had been contagious. He reached out and took her hand, “[I wish I could just do something else besides locking Mel up under the same roof with me to help her...]”
"[You are not the man to solve all the world's ills, my love,]" Persephone murmured, giving his hand a squeeze. "[Speak with her sons and her siblings.]"
“[And say what?]” Hades sighed again. Everything that came to mind started with the phrase 'By the way...'. Maybe it was the buzzing in his head like a hive of bees had been jammed in there or the general ache and exhaustion in his body that kept tact from possible ideas.
"[And say that Hera is suffering and needs their help. It's not like everyone isn't going to find out Zeus is dead soon.]" Persephone shrugged again. "[You are letting your emotions cloud your judgment...]"
“[I know. That's why I'm curled around you like this.]” Hades gave her hand a squeeze, “[I should probably tell everyone he is dead and that she is suffering in the same breath. It's not like the people with half a brain wouldn't figure it out and the rest of them wouldn't just ask me... cuts down on my replies.]”
"[See? Now you are thinking logically,]" Persephone murmured, leaning over to give him a kiss. "[...it's going to be all okay.]"
Hades returned the kiss gently, before releasing it and rolling to his back once more to settle into the bed without trapping her to his side. She would have to be able to get up. At least eventually she would. “[I'll believe you. I'll give the announcement a little more time. Maybe she will be a little stronger with a little time...]” He could hope at least. As long as she was not wandering around thinking herself a ghost, she was already recovering better than he did in a similar state. “[... When I pass out, it's probably going to be for a good while... you'll handle things until I come to again, right?]”
"[Of course. I can keep the peace for awhile. Promise.]" Persephone smiled, touching his cheek. "[You should rest now, my love.]"
“[We'll team up as soon as I'm awake again and the buzzing stops...]” Hades leaned into her touch as he closed his eyes again. The only good part of any of this was he was sure he was too exhausted to dream.
Dahlia suppressed her sigh until she could make it out into the hallway. She worried for her husband--worried about the burden that he seemed guilted into shouldering. Glancing downstairs at the lower level of the house and thinking of their guests, she made a promise that she would not let him shoulder it alone.
Summary: Hades collapses into his bed after a long night and talks to his fiance about what to do from here. Persephone does all she can to help him.
