Who: Lucy and Shiri
What: Baywatch rescue scene! Only…not quite Baywatch.
Where: The beach
When: Current time. Ah Monday…
Warnings: I can’t think of any that apply here, nope. Good clean fun!
Shiri hated Mondays. Classes began again after a weekend reprieve. It was a secular day of nothing on top of that. It wasn't even a pretty day. She had come to the cliff side to overlook the sea and watch as the sun rose high in the sky, brushing the waters with a glistening sheen as she mediated and prayed in the relative isolation provided, but no. The off and on again thunderstorms had to ruin that. The weather couldn't decide whether it wanted to be rainy or sunny, either would have been fine, and she couldn't help but frown at it as her eyes remained locked on the skies, but seemingly staring passed the darkened clouds to something beyond that.
For hours she sat, perfectly relaxed, whispering words of praise when not silent in a cloak of thoughts. Her classes had been canceled this 'fine' morning; she had fallen back to her own nature to fill in the hours. But her nature was not as passive and quiet as many mortals so believed. Prayer and mediation wasn't always quiet and peaceful, it wasn't always rational and calm. Sometimes, just sometimes, caught in a moment of transcendence of the mortal world, it was violent and sudden. Spontaneous and seemingly insane even...
"~Deep calling on deep, in the roar of the waters; your torrents and all your waves swept over me...~" The whispered psalm escaped her lips as she rolled up to her feet and lowered her eyes to the turbulent waves. A manic smile crossed her pale features as she stood at the edge of the cliff...
Mediation and prayer could be very violent and sudden; a lot of the risk was taken away when one was a goddess, but none of the possible spontaneous insanity.
Without hesitation, Shiri leapt from the rock, diving directly into the darkened waves one hundred feet below.
Apparently there was a shortage of patients coming in today, so they'd sent Lucy home early from the clinic. It worked just as well for her as far as changes went and since she hadn't been here long, she decided to take the opportunity to explore some of the places she hadn't been to visit yet. For some reason, despite the on and off storms, she'd opted for checking out the beach. The weather was distinctly...well...she'd seen better and been caught in worse the past few days. Right now she almost wished she had a camera. It would have been neat to get a couple shots of...Holy Shit! she thought as her eye caught the woman jumping from the rock. She hadn't exactly had to deal with suicides in a long while and never the kind that went this far, but a goddess was a goddess and better to do something about it than not. Without hesitation, she raced toward the same spot and threw herself into the waves instantly. Hopefully if she hurried, things would work out for the better.
At the very least, the Albino broke the waves properly, going feet first in a narrow point. However, when the rushing waves consumed and wrapped around her, consciousness left her very, very quickly. She could remember being warm and then the darkness...
At least it was easy enough spot her this way, Artemis thought, a thousand curses floating through her mind in several languages as she hurried after the bright spot of white. Hurry up, hurry...she scolded herself, as she pushed herself down under the waves. It had been a long time since she had tried anything like this and fighting with the waves was proving to be difficult but not completely insurmountable and for now, she was okay with breathing. Now if she just kept searching about for...there...that was something. If she pushed just a little further, she might be able to grab hold of her...
The unconscious goddess' body was taking the action of trying to float back to the surface, only the undercurrent of the waves held her under, but her long, lithe arms floated above her head, easily grabbed.
Good! It was easy enough to grab her then. Artemis knew that she should check for breathing or other vital signs but right here in the open water, it wasn't such a good idea. She settled for hurrying towards the shore as fast as she could swim under the current circumstances. Okay. what should she be doing once they got to shore with a human again? If Apollo were here, it would probably have been easier to let him handle this but thinking about what he'd do should be enough to help. Okay, first thing was first, she knew, after she'd gotten them to shore again. There was getting her breathing, wasn't there?
If Apollo were there, the muse would probably pretend to not be breathing to get mouth to mouth from him. But divine instinct drove her body to breathe and she began to cough.
Okay good! Artemis tried to tilt her a little now, to make it easier to get the water out. Establishing anything else could wait, she knew, until all that was taken care of. Finally all the water seemed to have left the woman's lungs. Okay. Time to try questions now then. "Are you all right?" she started asking, despite how idiotic that question happened to sound to her.
Shiri coughed up the last of the salt water, her senses returning to her. There was someone with her. A woman was with her... Asking questions. Tucking her knees under her, her dress clung to her pale skin just like the sand clung to the wet fabric. “... Yes. I am okay...” It had actually been an incredible rush. Even now her heart pounded in her chest while her mind was completely clear.
Artemis looked around for something to wrap around the woman, but she hadn't even left a jacket in the car that she could grab and no one else seemed to be around who might have had a towel that they could borrow so that one was out. Well then, probably it was time to move onto step two of this little rescue and hope she didn't wind up making her want to jump again. "That's good." she said by way of not launching into an anti-suicide talk right away. "So...about what happened out here...is there someone you need to call or anything?"
“What happened out there?” Shiri looked up to the cliff and then back to her blonde rescuer. It seemed so clear to her what had happened... The result had been more profound, she really had felt a comforting warmth. “I jumped and then you pulled me out, I assume. Thank you for that. I guess, I had not thought that part out.”
"Well yeah, I did." Artemis agreed, smiling a little. "But no I mean what caused you to...Oh." she said, when the rest of what the woman had said caught up to her. "I guess not thinking things out would sort of...make that happen in a way. But um..." Oh God. How did this go again? "I should be saying something about how no matter what it is, it's not worth dying, shouldn't I?" she asked, almost to herself.
“Probably. But do not worry.” Shiri couldn't help but giggle even as she began to shiver. Gods, she really wished she felt warm now. Where was the 85 degree weather she was promised? “I was not trying to die.”
"No?" Artemis half wondered if she was crazy then. "It's deep here for regular swimming and it's not really the weather for it." she pointed out. Something told her the other woman was serious about this but...why would someone go jumping off into deep water nearly drowning if they weren't trying to....maybe albinos were slightly crazy? She didn't remember anything about that ever coming up before so maybe it was just this one?
“Nope. Not at all.” Shiri couldn't help but grin before finding her feet and dusting herself off. Her smile fell when she stood up. Aww, her shoes were gone. Her shoes were gonna be lost forever. And her scarf, too. She looked over to the waves and frowned at them as hard as she could. They had claimed two victims this day.
"So what is this...." Artemis wondered how far a mortal would take this line of questioning. She had the feeling it really depended on the person but was it too weird to bother complete strangers about this. "Sorry...I seem rude." she added after a second. "It's just...I don't think I've ever met anyone who does this kind of thing for fun before, you know."
The muse turned her attention back to her rescuer after frowning at the ocean for another moment. Shiri regained her smile as she ran her hands through her soaked white hair to free it from her skin. “I did not do it for fun. I...” Hmm, how to explain it to a mortal. Let's go with, “I was caught up in a moment.”
"Really?" Artemis decided that the woman probably was a little crazy but it did seem to be the harmless sort of cat lady crazy as opposed to the sort of crazy that involved mass murders with wiffle bats so she could accept that one, maybe. "Be careful from now on though, won't you?" She added, drawing her knees up to her chest when she realized that it was kind of cold being out here with her wet clothes.
For some reason, even in her cowardly heart, Shiri didn't feel like she had any reason to look back on that previous moment and be shocked by how dangerous it actually was. It didn't dawn on her that she could have struck her head on a rock if she had leapt just a little less out into the waves and bled out into the ocean... Maybe that would have killed her. Val had come close in the similar way. Anything could have happened, but in her heart she felt no fear and so her mind offered her no possible bad scenarios. After all, it had ended well. Still... “I will be careful. Promise. I cannot assume nice people like you will always be there to fish me out.”
Artemis grinned at this. "It's not usually on my schedule, no." she agreed, "But I'm glad I was able to be here today." Fate was funny like sometimes wasn't it? "I'm..Lucy by the way." It was weird how she had to pause this time to introduce herself. Usually she didn't have any problems with this sort of thing. How funny. The last time she'd done that had been when she'd met...Hmm...
“My name is Shiri.” And Shiri remembered just then that she was in America. Right. She knew how to do introductions. Gracefully, she extended her hand to the other, deep black and blues already beginning to rise to the surface of her very telling skin. “Nice to meet you.”
"The same." Artemis shook her hand carefully, frowning at the coloring on her skin. "Oh that doesn't look good." she nodded at the bruising. "Do you need some help or anything?"
Shiri lowered her gaze to the bruising. Her legs were probably worst. Bothersome. They would probably hurt later, too, when the adrenaline wore off. Hmm, maybe she could get Adam to pray tonight. Make her feel better... And then pray again tomorrow because it was her holy day. Her smile couldn't help but brighten, which only made her probably seem crazy to someone lacking telepathy. “They probably look worse than they are. You have already done enough for me, Lucy.”
"Well," Artemis hesitated and again thought about what it might be like to be Apollo right now. If she was, she could have fixed them easily enough. But then that would have brought about all kinds of weird questions probably and so she could let it go for now. "If you're sure about that." It looked plenty bad enough to her but maybe it was a pigment thing too.
Bruises always looked terrible on her, maybe even with a capital T and E, due to her pigment. Serious injuries even worse. But Shiri could humor the helpful mortal a bit more. It was kinda fun, she had a similar personality to her own mortal. All helpful and ready to leap into waves and worry about others before worrying about herself. “I doubt a doctor would do much about them. You do not need to worry. Sleep well when you lay your head down tonight.”
That was a little weird, Artemis thought. Archaic sort of even and...perhaps there was more to this particular mortal than met the eye, but she couldn't be sure yet and you couldn't very well go around asking people if they were divine because...well hell, she was bound to look crazier by contrast if she did. Instead of that, she did have other options and she figured she could go with those. "You too, Shiri." she told the woman with a nod and smile. "Be careful!"
The muse smiled to the helpful blonde mortal again and nodded, “You, too, Lucy. Try to get inside before you get even wetter. I will do the same.” And as it sounded like those were the words of a farewell, Shiri was off in a graceful, agile barefoot dash to where she remembered where her motorcycle was. She was pretty sure she could drive home barefoot. After all, she had apparently done it while sleep walking at least once.
Artemis shook her head a little as she watched the strange woman move away and the she noticed the rain was picking up again. Getting dry suddenly seemed like a great idea and then maybe a little bit of investigating was in order...
Summary: Shiri gives into an impulse at the beach and indulges in a bit of diving. Lucy misconstrues the situation and heroic rescues (and more identidy hijinks!) ensue!
