Old City Academy had been a sanctuary for Lissa and Rose since they ended up here last fall. Leaving St. Vladimir's wasn't easy and they moved around a lot, trying to stay one step ahead of the Guardians who were trying desperately to track down the Dragomir princess. After being attacked by the psi hounds in Chicago, they were at their wits end. Initially, Rose had been against the idea of going to Pennsylvania, especially a school that was so close in proximity to the Moroi Court, but Lissa convinced her that it was the last place anyone would look for the runaways because of the proximity.
For the past six months, she had been right. Things were going well here. They were making friends and learning things in their classes. There hadn't been any sign of Guardians finding them. The fact that the school was built on some sort of temporal nexus probably helped with that, given that they were several years in the future here. All in all, Lissa was pleased and hoped they could graduate without further incident. Once she was eighteen and a legal adult, no one could force her back to St. Vlad's or to Court or anywhere else.
The relative safety and peace of the school didn't resolve all of Lissa's issues. There were still times when she became overwhelmed with grief over the loss of her parents and brother. She thanked God daily that Rose had survived the accident. If she had lost her best friend along with her family, she didn't think she would have the strength to survive. Since coming to Old City Academy, she had refrained from releasing the grief and overwhelming emotions by cutting. She knew it bothered Rose when she indulged and she also knew that they couldn't afford to have school officials looking too closely at the forged enrollment papers they managed to procure. So, when things became too hard, she instead slipped into the chapel on the school grounds, finding solace in the quiet and basking in the presence of God.
It was rare to run into anyone else at the chapel and she frowned when she heard someone else enter. Hopefully whoever it was would leave her alone.
