She shrugged again, "That doesn't matter. If I start making a difference between 'them' and 'us', then I'm no better than a white supremist making a difference between 'white' and 'everyone else'. Falling into that mindset only exasberates the situation. It does nothing to heal it."
It was a lesson she had learned, oddly enough, from participating in protests over animal testing in labs. You couldn't strike out with vilolence. You could raise your voice and block the entrance as best you can... but you couldn't resort to violence. Sure, it didn't stop the cruelty quickly or in some cases at all... but resorting to violence would only make the world think worse of you, not them. Sympathy and a harder look at those doing wrong was only gained when you didn't fight or blow things up.
