Cassie stood still in shocked horror- but only for a moment. Then she was on her knees pawing through the smoking wreckage. Supposedly her suit and gloves were flame retardant and heat resistant. Well, she'd be putting them to the test now.
Carefully she sifted through the wreckage until she came to the prone body of Spider-Man and the webbed kid, both of whom she lifted gently and laid out on the pavement near the firetrucks. EMTs and firemen swarmed on the webbed boy who was soon freed and handed, unharmed but sticky, to his mother.
Cassie shrunk down until she was normal size and knelt by Spider-Man. She pressed her ear to his chest and listened; he was breathing. Heaving a sigh of relief, Cassie turned and watched as an EMT, a police officer, and a fireman cautiously approached.
"He's okay," she called out and they paused and one suggested with obvious uncertainty that he ought to be taken to a hospital. The EMT strode forward and reached down, presumably to demask him, and Cassie swatted his hand away.
"I'll take care of it," she said and before they could object she was growing again. She put Spider-Man into her palm and began making her way quickly down the street, thankful that emergency personnel had closed it off to traffic and pedestrians. When she rounded a corner she put Spider-man in an alley and then shrunk again.
"Hey, come on wake up," Cassie murmured and bent down to shake him a little. If he would just regain consciousness she could find out if he wanted her to actually take him to the emergency room or not.
