It started out as a feeling...
Characters: Cassie, Thomas
Setting: Genosha
Content: Probably nothing
Summary: Cassie arrives on Genosha in search of Billy
Cassie Lang stood in a line in the Genoshan equivalent of "customs" behind a very tall man with a pinkish hue to his skin. There were all sorts of interesting people around. Genosha in this universe was certainly nothing like the Genosha back home. She was here in search of Billy. Though she had no idea why she was in another universe- and it hadn't taken long to realize that this was another universe- the teleportation that had brought her from an Initiative training session to a park in Paris over a month before definitely had something to do with Billy. Cassie managed as best she could; she lived in a youth hostel and got a job waitressing in a little restaurant that catered mostly to tourists. She suspected that Billy didn't know she was here- after all, couldn't he find anyone he wanted to? It meant she had to find him. It was a few weeks of hopeless waiting before she finally resolved to search for Wiccan and then she had to save up enough money to get anywhere.
When she'd been 'ported she'd been in costume, no money or belongings or identification on her. The woman who ran the restaurant where she worked took pity on her and gave her a job cleaning until another girl quit and the owner decided on a whim to give Cassie a promotion. Waitressing wasn't so bad; one of the cooks taught her a few phrases in French, which she could recite passably and if she accented her English the tourists who didn't know any better found it charming and tipped well. Eventually she'd saved up enough for a plane ticket and decided to try New York City (more because she wondered if her parents existed here than from any certainty that Billy would be there).
As luck would have it, on the night before she planned to buy her plane ticket, Cassie used her powers to rescue a man from a mugging. In thanks, the man- who happened not only to speak English but to be a mutant- took her out for a cup of coffee. He was interesting company and somehow their conversation got around to his life and how up until recently he'd been living on the Mutant Haven of Genosha. Cassie's curiosity was piqued and a series of questions led to the story of Magneto's strange disappearance and his return with a pair of teenage boys. Of course, Cassie couldn't be certain, but the timing of the strangeness on Genosha was no coincidence and so she changed her plans and with the mutant's help secured passage to the island.
That had been four days before and she had finally arrived, by boat, and was shuffled with the rest of the ship passengers into the building where new arrivals checked in. She'd been in line for half an hour already, and after the pink-skinned man stepped forward Cassie finally reached the front and waited to be noticed.
"Next!" called the woman behind the long desk and Cassie stepped forward. "Fill this out," the woman instructed without looking up as she pushed a form towards Cassie. It was all basic stuff; name, age, ability, reason for seeking asylum in Genosha. When she'd finished the form the woman pointed to a little machine on the counter top with a circular hole in which Cassie was to put her index finger in. She did so somewhat warily, and immediately cried out in pain.
"Ouch!" Cassie jerked back after something in the machine pricked her and when she pulled her finger away it was bleeding. She sucked on the wound, looking miffed, as the machine whirred and clanked. A red light began to flash and a polite electronic voice repeated Not a mutant. Not a mutant.
"Miss-" the woman behind the counter glanced at the form Cassie had just filled out. "Lang. If you could step over there, please." The woman was glaring rather coldly and Cassie stared around in confusion as others nearby seemed to be staring with rather unpleasant expressions.
"What? Why?" Cassie asked, refusing to move from the front of the queue. A man in a security outfit advanced towards her and the woman ordered him to "Escort Miss Lang out." The guard grabbed her by the shoulders and attempted to lead her out of the building.
"H-hey! Let me go!" Cassie protested and struggled against the man who held her. She began to grow and soon her head was bumping the ceiling and she scowled down at the man who had grabbed her and the woman behind the desk.
