It took a moment, but shortly Jessica found herself crushing the railing under both hands as she slipped on a step, hauling herself up to the next one where she paused, feeling that gunshot still rattling around in her bones and finally feeling what felt like the weight of a glacier in water running off of her shoulders. She tried to take a breath and grit her teeth against a sob, feeling sick, refusing to let it out because this was not the time. She shouldn't have stopped. She forced herself back into motion, flying up the stairs, not bothering to work out what Kilgrave intended with the sprinkler system. She had her own course right now, she'd think about that later.
She went crashing back out into the hall when she was pretty sure a door read double digits, sprinting across the soggy carpet with one hand on the wall to feel her way through. She could hear the tiny mob spreading out behind her, searching as blind as she was. Perfect. Get away from each other. Stay isolated. Don't let anyone near you.
