Every surviving civilization is obliged to become spacefaring--
Characters: Everybody. Or nobody. You can treat this like a narrative and write separate posts, or use this as a jumping off point for multiple threads.
Setting: The Dyson Sphere and the universe
Content: Nothing questionable
Summary: SPACE.
Hope was an opiate for the masses. It could shore them up through their trials, offer redemption in their tribulations. Even its tiniest glimmer was a balm for fear, a reason to fight, the means to go on living. Vulnerable and afraid, humanity fled out into the dark vaccuum of space, with only their hope to sustain them. Some clung to the belief that they would one day return to Earth and pick up the pieces of the existence they'd left behind. Others wished for a new and better future out among the stars. Most were simply glad to see a tomorrow at all. Hopeful and afraid, the refugees arrived at their destination, the far away Dyson Sphere.
Half the size of the sun, the unfinished solar powered megastructure was even larger than they could comprehend. This artificial alien world frightened some of Earth's children, too different from the beautiful living planet where they were born. The pessimistic longed for their real home, certain that they could never endure this place. To others it was marvelous, and they dreamed of all the possibilities that a future here might hold for them. In time the people of Earth adjusted to their exotic surroundings, returning to old habits and falling into familiar patterns. What seemed terrifying and extraordinary to them in the beginning was now routine. Their reluctant refuge had, like it or not, become their home.
It was a home they all shared in short lived peace. Where at first the evacuees clustered together united by tragedy, anxious and uncertain, now they broke away and scattered. Pushing into further zones of the uncompleted sphere, leaders demanded their own territory, renewing old Earth rivalries and sowing ancient distrust. The Earthlings rejected the synthetic uniformity provided them by the sphere's extraterrestrial Shi'ar engineers, transforming the strange environment into a patchwork of architecture and culture reminiscent of the countries they'd left behind. Even as they shaped and settled into their new world, the adventurous and reckless among them left it, setting out to explore the vast universe and find a place within it. Here in space, humanity would adapt and survive, forging a life for themselves after Earth.
