"We never really got along," Tony had to point out, but there was mounting evidence that he was the only one who was starkly aware of that fact. He had to clear his throat, not finding that fact nearly as amusing now that he said it, lips pursed and brow furrowed thoughtfully. As they had been, though, Tony thought they encouraged each other's strengths and compensated for each other's weaknesses very well-- in theory, they should have been a solid team. What they were missing was a mediator and a fulcrum, and if that wasn't Steve...he really had changed. Maybe there wasn't any more to say, but Tony still asked again, "What happened?" softer this time, as though for himself. Desperately, he knew, he suggested, "This isn't just the hospital and that hysteria thing, is it? I mean, how long have you been...have you told anyone else?" It wasn't like Steve, either, to go into something without a plan. Either this was an impulse brought on by the emotional terrorism in Queens, or he was holding out on Tony.
