Cassie whirled at the sound of her name and studied Kate suspiciously for a moment but the other girl's confusion was obvious so at least Cassie wasn't going crazy here. She'd come to a similar conclusion as Kate but the voice calling them sounded especially exasperated now, so they'd apparently have to regroup for a more serious discussion after dinner. With their new parents.
"Last thing I remember is the portal-" she said hurriedly as she headed for the stairway. Best thing to do now was play along and see if they could get answers. "I think we're sisters," she said as they reached the bottom and the blonde woman from the pictures upstairs rounded a corner and raised her eyebrows.
"Of course you're sisters," she said with a disapproving look at Kate. "Katie, stop telling your sister she's adopted." Then her look became fond and she smiled knowingly between them like this was some kind of inside joke. "Just because you're so different from one another doesn't mean you're not both my babies." She leaned in and kissed them each on the forehead then added, "You can watch your birth videos if you don't believe me." She chuckled at Cassie's disgusted face (apparently the correct reaction) and swept back into the kitchen.
