Dilation
Characters: The birthday girl and a couple of old dudes, OTA! Drop by, have a drink.
Setting: The coffee shop, then a fancy place
Content: Depends on who gets involved. Come on, help me put a warning here.
Summary: Cassie insists on getting older and it's bewildering but must be acknowledged.
If this had actually been on his calendar, Tony might have avoided the phone call from a slightly hysterical Steve (Tony could tell he was hysterical because there was absolutely no inflection in his voice; nada, not even when he said Tony's name and gave him the kind of childhood flashbacks that he should have been telling a therapist about) demanding to know where he was. That wasn't the only person calling about his whereabouts, but Tony thought this one was safe to answer. What could Steve possibly have to be mad at him about today? Actually, that was a dangerous question that Tony avoided asking, but he was definitely supposed to be a lesser evil.
While Steve was waiting ever so patiently at the restaurant Tony had instructed him in no uncertain terms to be at promptly at 5:30 days ago, Tony was wrapped up in a conversation with a transplant surgeon in the bathroom off of the ballroom where Tony was supposed to be giving a speech. The call at 6 o'clock had him checking his watch and hissing, "Sssshit," at the surgeon, cursing Pepper for neglecting to note for him that he meant to skip out on work tonight. This promotion was a terrible idea, she was hardly present anymore. "You got this, right?" he asked his new friend of the speech he was already 45 minutes late for and probably had moved off of the schedule.
By the time Tony arrived at the erstwhile Starbucks, it was almost 6:30 and Cassie would have been off work an hour ago. Not to mention, the place was a zoo as students trickled out of their last class for the day and the workforce was collectively ejected from office buildings in a last, valiant push. Tony fought his way through, jacket over his arm and tie loose around his warm neck, gesturing to get someone's attention to get him some water or something and find out where Cassie was for him. That shouldn't be hard; wherever the pony was, if one of them could keep their promises. Maybe Steve had the good sense to get her a gift. That would be a fine balm, if he hadn't given up and left already, too.
