This 'team' was the last place any of them wanted to be; if Tony had effectively been hijacked to put him there, then Hammer clearly didn't restrict his recruitment practices by any kind of morality. Even that unwelcoming pair in the kitchen could have had good reason not to trust anyone that approached them.
Huffing a sigh of all of that frustration that wasn't going anywhere fast, Tony sat up straight again to watch his careful first touch to her back to test its welcome, then leaned against her shoulder with an arm around her to pull her into a hug. They had never been so intimate, and he had never felt so disconnected from her or anyone on that team until now, but maybe that was part of their asynchronicity. Who ever thought they'd be any good at talking it out anyway? Maybe this would make more sense, that he really didn't mean to keep fucking up and leaving everyone hanging when he should have been there. He would help, if she had anything to tell him or not. He was going to fix it.
