Beretta's voice rapidly went from an intriguing, old world smokiness to an unwelcome grate as Tony tried to process what felt conflictingly like bumping into a bad ex and seeing his bed for the first time after a long trip. Amongst it all, Tony thought he would feel much the same way if his dad had just walked casually into the room, though he hadn't sorted out yet where Jess' casual reservation was coming from. Maybe the fact that she had neglected to tell anybody that she wasn't in a dungeon somewhere. Did Wanda know about this? Ultimately, then, Tony was thankful she hadn't been any more enthusiastic, because he might have regretted his own excitable greeting cut short by Jess' attitude. A lot wasn't right here. He must have looked just as wrong.
"I thought you were dead," Iron Man greeted, which was particularly dramatic but it wouldn't have been a major leap to make. Okay, Avengers disappeared all of the time and he hadn't exactly left Jessica with any reason to contact him, but one of them had to balance this revelation appropriately. Were they going to talk about this, or was it a look forward and move on situation? Tony didn't want to move on. The pieces didn't fit together.
