"Back up," he answered simply. Every mission he'd ever done had some kind of backup, it was just common sense. That was why he'd taken Alex to Latveria for the fucked up thing with the orphans, why he'd had Coulson there when he confronted Val for being a traitor. It would've been different if he were just sending in an LMD, but going into this on his own would be stupid. Nick didn't doubt he could take out the assassin but there was still the chance the guy might get the better of him, and it wasn't a risk he was willing to take. "Always take back up."
The trip to the nearest commercial airport took nearly two hours and probably would've been quicker if Nick's necessary back up hadn't made him stop for burgers and then at a gas station for candy. The price you paid for having a teenaged demi-god to watch your back. When they got to the airport there was an issue about parking and he had to resist the urge to shoot the long-term lot attendant. Fury was really missing the expediency of S.H.I.E.L.D. helicopters and jet planes. He was missing their privacy, too, when they boarded the passenger plane (thankfully without any issues at security) and he found himself sandwiched between Alex and a woman who probably could've done with two seats to herself.
