A funny thing happened on the way back from the U.N.
Characters: Sue Storm
Setting: streets of Manhattan, New York
Content: Sue meets a stranger, Namor in disguise
Summary: Sue returns from a U.N. briefing and runs into a stranger, they talk and things of interest occur!
"And that is one small part of the process, elimination of contamination to the oceans, air and land. This is not only admirable it is achievable. New and better filtration, new methods of production and of course sanctions by you, those who have the power to influence change. I personally feel passionately on the subject, so you will please forgive my boldness when I issue this not as a request, but a challenge. Meet that challenge, show the world what can be done when people work together for the betterment of all life on earth."
A short silence signaled the end of her prepared speech and Sue looked out of the crowd, unable to see much more than a massive auditorium under the bright lights.
"Thank you, ladies and gentlemen for the kind attention. Copies of the report have been issued and further information is available from the Foundation itself. Once again, Doctor Richards and myself strongly urge you to look into these methods of reducing and reversing the damage already done to the planet by waste and neglect. We can make this world a better place for our children and our children's children."
With a nod, Susan Storm closed the folder, accepted the applause and grateful to step off the main stage. There was quite a gathering of those looking to press the flesh as she left. She was not fond of these meetings, but as she had been so often told, she was the best 'face' for the Fantastic Four and the Foundations other business ventures. She was smart enough to understand the material, motherly enough to be able to dumb it down while being kind, and pretty enough that those who would never understand it would at least give her their attention. She loathed the idea of her looks being what might lead someone to do the right thing, but it was a fact of life.
She made her way through the crowd, greeting and smiling and shaking hands. Some commented on how impressive her speech was, some seemed legitimately interested in their methods, others just looked to slide in close to her. The latter got the quick brush off and both the former were given more polite attention. It was like a tide of people not just the representatives themselves but their hangers on and the media. It would be big news in the right circles, but the majority of people in the world would just pass it by as another news story.
It felt like hours before she reached the lobby, she gathered her things, slipped into her coat and tucked her portfolio under her arm. One of the men who had been following her with the odd question and frequent leer offered to share his car so she would not have to walk. Sue turned to him with a smile and a firm tone of voice. "Thank you..but what I just said in there? I believe it. Do you even know what that Lexus or Infinity you ride around in costs us environmentally? The gas, the oil, the pollution. No thank you, I'm perfectly capable of walking." Before the man could retort she was on her way, head held high and jaw set. She had her principles and it annoyed her that the only thing that particular man would take from her report was that she was a pretty woman. "Men, it's why the world is the way it is." She muttered, even if she chided herself. Reed was a man, and he was trying to make a difference. But for every Reed there would be a hundred of the man she just left.
She needed to cool down, the stress of running everything was wearing on her and now Johnny picked a wonderful time to go on tour. Yes so it was a goodwill tour, but still! She was left holding everything on her shoulders, maybe she needed a vacation. She laughed out loud at the idea but at least she was smiling now.
