Justin wasn't used to working like this. He really was more intelligent than people gave him credit for most of the time. He took shortcuts, and pushed things, but the underlying intelligence was there. This though was so far from how he worked. Something like this required diagnostics, testing, non-human trials. This wasn't something you needed to have work first try.
