Li Hua did smile then, glad that the girl had talked to her even though she looked so reticent and ready to take her food and run. That wasn't rare. Kids didn't often trust the hand-outs when they had been burned before. She took up one of the sandwiches to hold out to the girl, offering it wordlessly until she took it, like this was the price for an answer.
"I think I would remember you, too," she finally replied, her gaze darting up to the girl's hair then lifting one finger to the sky before she elaborated, "It is very beautiful." She took up a sandwich herself, slowly unwrapping it like they were just sharing a meal here, like the other picnickers, and continued, "I don't usually come this far downtown. Do you live here?"
