The sky was a clear blue, but the reporter standing in front of the wavy and gapped wire fence kept looking up as if she could see clouds gathering and threatening to ruin her hair. She gave it one last flip and fluff before adjusting her blouse and looking to the cameraman for approval, who gave her a smiling thumbs up before she shifted her gaze directly to the camera lens. His good cheer was gone immediately. It wasn't exactly a flattering or visually interesting local. In fact, he doubted there was anything interesting at all going on here. Behind Sandy and in front of the closed fence there was a single police car, then a knot of DO NOT CROSS tape just tying the gate closed. Through the fence's gaps, the parking lot-- more like a yard-- looked unkempt and unwelcoming, and it wasn't clear if this was because of the previous night's incident, or because that was the way it always was. Above the fence, a big, square solid white warehouse building loomed with a single, all caps serif font sign declaring WESTERN PNEUMATICS. The trundling garage door below it was open, but over the fence and through the camera lens only the yawning ceiling of the warehouse could be seen. Behind it, more similar buildings sprawled. To its right, there was some kind of unrelated single-story office building, and to the left a bungalow style home where a girl child stared blank and open mouthed through the slats of the paint-peeled fence, banging the head of her Barbie doll on the wood. Behind the camera man was a wall of greenery, and behind that a dusty trailer park where he was informed they would be holding interviews. Great.
One of the police still sat in her cruiser, the door open to let her prop one foot on the gravel to keep the air in the car cool while she wrote without much enthusiasm or attentiveness on a notepad, irritatingly in his shot. Sandy glanced up at the sky through the multitude of crossing wires and telephone poles.
"This is Sandy Suzume for KPTV News. Behind me is Western Pneumatics Incorporated, designers and manufacturers of mechanical systems and until last night a proud and respected part of this community, serving not only the local industries but much of North America. Last night, this company was attacked, making them the fifth in a vile string of such reprehensible-- too dramatic? I think it's going to rain, it makes me dramatic." The cameraman rolled his eyes behind his lens, but smiled when he leaned around the camera to offer a coffee break.
