Don't leave 'cause I believe we were meant to sleep in the dirt-
Characters: Wanda and Pietro
Setting: An interrogation room in S.H.I.E.L.D. psy-ops division
Content: Nothing questionable And nothing unclean, shut up, Dezi
Summary: Wanda and Pietro reunite after a year apart
You’re wrong. Those were the last words Wanda had spoken to Pietro, over a year ago (had it really been so long?), then stormed from his bedroom right before he’d disappeared out of her life completely. They were horrible words. Condemnation and accusation and a loss of faith that she could never forgive herself for. They would haunt her at her worst moments, those moments when she missed him and needed him the most. When she was told that her brother was dying all she wanted was to take them back, to never have said them, to bury them where he would never hear them and then everything would be all right again. When she was told that her brother would live, the guilt somehow got worse.
Wanda took him from Magneto’s plane but that wasn’t enough. He was unconscious and she couldn’t tell him anything and as soon as they landed S.H.I.E.L.D. seized him for interrogation. They refused to let her see him, so she refused to leave. She sat in Fury’s office and she waited. What the Psi-ops learned from Pietro’s mind should have been a relief, but it wasn’t. All of that time, that endless year, Pietro was exploited. His brain had been tampered with, his memories altered. He was a pawn and a prisoner and whatever he’d done was essentially against his will. And he didn’t even know and that was horrifying. This manipulation was a new low, even for Magneto.
Worst of all, the Avengers had done nothing. Wanda had done nothing to help Pietro, even when she’d had a feeling that something was wrong about this, and now she would have to live with that shame. It didn’t make facing Pietro any easier but she wanted nothing else in the world more than she wanted to see him right now. She needed to apologize and she needed to try even in some infinitesimal way to make this right. Wanda did not ask the agents what horrible memories they’d dredged from Pietro’s mind. It was difficult to even begin to contemplate the myriad of tortures he must have endured over the past year at the hands of their father. This was the hardest lesson she’d ever learned- she would never doubt Pietro’s loyalty again.
They were finally going to allow her to see Pietro and take him back to the Avengers tower. She left Fury’s office and rode the elevator down several floors to the interrogation room where he was being held. In the hallway outside she paused, suddenly terrified. So much had changed in the past year. She’d changed and what would he be like now and were they supposed to just start over? Was it supposed to be that easy?
Wanda shook her head with a deep breath, then pushed open the door. “Hello, darling,” was all she said when she saw Pietro and she watched him and she waited.
