It was difficult for Wanda to follow Tony’s command- Stand down!- once he pulled Mystique away from her. She felt so much frustration and adrenaline and who knew what would’ve happened if Mystique hadn’t gone and Tony hadn’t followed. Their absence and the silence gave Wanda an opportunity to calm herself a little, to just think, but thinking got her nowhere. Thinking only made her more confused, wondering why she was so readily obeying Tony (don’t move) and letting Mystique just waltz out of here. Wanda should have been going after her or waking Cap or calling Nick or something. Instead, she simply stood there, right where they had left her. This was all such complete madness.
She’d taken her first few steps towards the doorway when Tony reappeared and she froze, following his gaze to the mess on the floor. Wordlessly, she turned and righted the table, aware that it was partially her fault it had been knocked down. Meticulously she plucked up each flower and set about arranging them back in their vase, just for something to do, because she wasn’t really sure what the protocol was when two Avengers let a terrorist assassin go free. Well no, she realized bitterly, she did know. It was to ignore it, just pretend nothing actually happened, and know you were responsible for god-knew what kind of disasters. That’s what they’d all done with Pietro, wasn’t it?
Thinking about her brother only brought to mind all of Wanda’s still unanswered questions. If she couldn’t trust the woman that had just tried to kill her then what was she supposed to think of Tony now? The man who was basically the reason they had reached this point at all. How was she supposed to handle all of his lies, not just to her but to the Avengers and to Nick, and would knowing the truth make him any less culpable? Would it make anything more rational?
“None of it makes sense,” she finally murmured and lifted her face to stare at him with a look equal parts suspicious and imploring. There was so much wrong with this and so little she actually understood.
