In mid-sentence Cassie paused and violently shivered. That was the weirdest feeling, like something just went through her. “Sorry,” she mumbled after a minute and continued, “Anyway, the report is- um...” Now she stopped again because the dude from accounting she’d been chatting with was giving her the weirdest look. Like, it really creeped her out. “Okay uh, leave the report on my desk,” she finished quickly and turned to leave before he could say anything or lunge at her or whatever that expression on his face meant.
No one crossed her path on the way to the elevator and she’d managed to convince herself that nothing was wrong until the doors slid open and she found one of the guys from reception inside. Feeling strangely wary she joined him inside and pressed the button for the floor with her office.
“Hey,” he greeted her and when Cassie glanced over, he had the same gross look that the accounting guy had worn. His greeting was accompanied by a leering grin and Cassie remembered uncomfortable that he always liked to joke about when she was turning eighteen. She’d thought he’d always been kidding but apparently he wasn’t since he was now suddenly reaching out to grope her or something.
“Step off,” she snapped and raised an arm to ward him off. What happened next took them both by surprise- a blast of dark energy left Cassie’s fingertips to knock the guy back against the elevator wall, right as the buzzer sounded to alert them that they’d reached her floor. The man looked more dazed than deterred and, though she worried she’d hurt him, her sense of self preservation won out. Cassie quickly exited the elevator and headed for the stairs. In the empty stairwell she dropped onto a step and closed her eyes, trying to focus and shrink but all she got was another blast of energy into the wall when she moved a hand. What the hell was going on?
