The other woman. She could have flinched then, as if he'd slapped her, but instead her eyes only dimmed and her smile twitched. Wanda turned her head away from him and gazed out at the carnival, just a moment to compose herself, and then she looked back at him with the smile still in place, even if it didn't quite reach her eyes anymore. So it was true. She'd suspected perhaps, but had hoped he'd been joking. To mention the fact that he had a girlfriend was probably, Wanda figured, his way of trying to tell her without telling her and that would be the best course of action given the situation.
She wouldn't ask. She didn't want to know. If she knew then she'd have to care, if she cared then it would have to hurt. Not knowing meant it didn't matter, that they could just carry on as they were and as long as he was willing to she was as well. Acknowledgment was acceptance of the fact that for someone else she cared about she just wasn't good enough. The last thing she wanted in her life at the moment was some new major emotional upheaval. So instead of questioning him she just shrugged and said lightly, "Oh, I'm sure I'm just one of many other women."
Her smile held valiantly for about five more seconds before it finally broke and she stared at him for a stretch of silence before suddenly reaching out to take his hand in both of hers and murmuring, "Tony." Wanda's smile returned and, though sad, it was at least genuine as she looked him squarely in the eyes. "I'm here for you, alright? I mean, even if it's like the blind leading the blind, I'm here. I'll always be, when you need me, whatever you need me for. Even though I'm ah-" she laughed softly to herself, "troublesome, I'm still your friend. I care about you, I honestly do. You, not just the things you do for me. Please don't forget that." She couldn't lose him again, couldn't let anything else petty or ridiculous come between them. Whatever came, Wanda would grin and bear it and prove she could be more for her friend, this man she loved, than just another problem he had to solve.
